Hamilton is it worth it?

For some reason I've suddenly decided I really want to see Hamilton. Decent tickets are about £125 and we're up north so train, hotel and food on top. Although we can afford it I'm not sure I can justify the cost to myself. Anyone seen it? Is it worth it?!

Gonna buck the trend here, If you want to drop £125+ On what is (in my opinion) a twee millenial attempt at an american history lesson read out in an average hip hop style, then fill your boots! The cast? Incredible! the story, music and set? It felt like a reasonable University first ‘real’ production effort, but to me, not worth the hype/money it seems to have generated. That said, it seems I am in a mumsnet minority, so you may indeed love it.

Crimebustersofthesea · 04/11/2018 20:21

You were all supposed to tell me its rubbish and put me off spending my hard earned cash Grin

Going to book it tomorrow, might try and convince DH it's a Christmas present to each other (despite it being mostly for me...)

Disagree with sm40 about it being like Eminem! Yes, some songs are fast but the wordplay is magnificent and often very funny. There are slower songs too. It's worth every single penny!!
You can find the original cast soundtrack on Spotify and probs YouTube if you want an idea. There are cheaper seats - I think we paid around £60 or £70 when we saw it in May.

Rowdythree · 04/11/2018 20:22

Absolutely go! We went to see it last week, like a pp we were in the grand circle and the view of the stage was excellent. We listened to the soundtrack before we went but to be honest the songs don't mean much without the visuals. We've been listening to it all week since we've seen it. The singing, dancing and acting were all flawless. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Teacherlikemisstrunchball · 04/11/2018 20:22

It is superb. As @alexanderhamilton says, it’s the best piece of theatre I’ve ever seen. I have been twice and loved it even more the 2nd time.

I don’t know anything else that can be simultaneously so funny (opening act 2) and then have you sobbing 30 minutes later. Everyone involved in the production is at the very top of their game and it is a joy to watch.

AlexanderHamilton · 04/11/2018 20:24

I think my favourite in terms of the staging is hurricane

Also keep an eye out for The Bullet. A female ensemble member who symbolises the bullet that kills Hamilton throughout the show.

Branleuse · 04/11/2018 20:27

I disagree that the music doesnt mean much without the visuals. It definitely does, and the soundtrack is awesome in its own right

caledonianclown · 04/11/2018 20:29

Totally worth it, DH hates musicals but he's obsessed with it! He does love rap music though. We had £37 seats and they were fine, very high up but still excellent view and you get a better overall view of the staging. Would go again in a heartbeat

Rowdythree · 04/11/2018 20:30

I agree the soundtrack is awesome, but as it's not my type of music, I didn't enjoy listening to it before I'd seen the show. Now I can listen to it and imagine the story which I found difficult before.

MrsJamin · 04/11/2018 20:34

It is truly an amazing creation of theatre and music, I saw it in April and it is easily the most listened to album of 2018 for me (and I listen to a lot of music!). I'd go again in a heartbeat.

TheQueenSnortsAvocados · 04/11/2018 20:37

Totally worth it, and if you're a rap fan there's a ton of 'Easter eggs' throughout.

And the songs are not samey.

siakcaci · 04/11/2018 20:38

Definitely do it.

First time I went in blind without having ever listened to the soundtrack. Grand circle £37.50 tickets. Legroom crap but doable.

Second time with a full understanding and knowing the songs. Stalls back row £100 tickets.

Both times were fabulous

siakcaci · 04/11/2018 20:38

Oh as absolutely nothing like Eminem

StoorieHoose · 04/11/2018 20:47

And if you go and don’t come out thinking Aaron Burr is better than Alexander Hamilton and that King George is the best thing ever then we can’t be friends Grin

siakcaci · 04/11/2018 20:50

The cast is about to change, which means I will need to go again

AlexanderHamilton · 04/11/2018 20:53

Giles Terera delivered a masterclassin acting.

Muddlingalongalone · 04/11/2018 20:55

I loved it! Captivating from start to finish.
We had £100 Or €125 tickets. Middle front row royal circle.
Did we have to have top tickets - probably not. Was it worth it - yes 100%

Flyaway78 · 04/11/2018 20:55

Yes!

StoorieHoose · 04/11/2018 20:58

Giles was mesmerising - I couldn’t stop watching him

GiantKitten · 04/11/2018 21:00

I went in the summer (front row grand circle tickets under £60, I think I was just lucky when I looked!)

Severely restricted legroom, but space to lean forward made it just tolerable.

I am quite old, not a fan of rap, had no idea what was going on more than half the time, but was still enthralled, enjoyed it massively & would go again Smile

Warmworm · 04/11/2018 21:01

Yes! I bought tickets for each of us (4!) as Christmas presents last year and we all absolutely loved it. We stayed in a cheapish hotel and made the most of two days in London (travelled from Wales). The theatre is really gorgeous too.

GiantKitten · 04/11/2018 21:02

George III was WONDERFUL!

(Visited Kew Palace next day. That was weird Confused)

Branleuse · 04/11/2018 21:05

I think the legroom in the whole theatre is pretty limited.

GiantKitten · 04/11/2018 21:06

View from grand circle front row Smile

It was a great night altogether.

I'm going in a few weeks with dd who is OBSESSSED with it.
Since listening to her playing the soundtrack on repeat, I'm really looking forward to it!
