Isn’t Alan Rickman so bloody lovely?

Great film.

Yes and yes

Beautiful film

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 02/11/2018 14:56

I am now watching Sense and Sensibility. Thanks OP!

HolyMountain · 02/11/2018 14:58

I can see why Marianne fell for Willoughby but I’d have shagged Al over him, no doubt !

Totally agree.

The scene where he implores, “Give me an occupation, Miss Dashwood, or I shall run mad" is exquisite.

DidoAndHerLament · 02/11/2018 15:00

Ooooh, Marianne in the rain "Willoughby, Willoughby" breaks my heart every time.

HappyEverIftar · 02/11/2018 15:01

Ah, Alan

....and that cottage, it’s perfect.

Is this the film where Emma and Greg fell in love?

AnotherEmma · 02/11/2018 15:05

One of my favourite scenes is when she’s playing the piano and singing, and when he arrives he stops before entering so he can watch her unnoticed 😍

And the scene when Elinor ugly cries!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/11/2018 15:05

Gotta love Alan.

I really rate Kate W in this too, but Emma Thompson should really have stayed on the other side of the camera - far too old.

AnotherEmma · 02/11/2018 15:05

Yes! (Emma and Greg)

AnotherEmma · 02/11/2018 15:07

“Emma Thompson should really have stayed on the other side of the camera - far too old.”

Shock Angry

I disagree. She is superb as Elinor.

How old was Emma Thompson when it was filmed? And how old was Hugh Grant?

HolyMountain · 02/11/2018 15:08

That Willoughby and his flash yellow wheeled carriage

You can tell he’s a wrongun

HolyMountain · 02/11/2018 15:09

I love Emma in this , not too old at all imo.

They’re all terrific.

But Remus has a point. Emma Thompson was 35/36 when this was made. Elinor is supposed to be 19! Marianne is supposed to be 16/17 and Kate Winslet was 20, so a lot closer to the intended age.

CalamityJane10 · 02/11/2018 15:13

I love the film and the book. Although Marianne does make me hoik up my judgy pants. All that galavantic about unchaperoned and squealing- it was never going to end well Grin.

TeaStory · 02/11/2018 15:14

Emma Thompson put in a wonderful performance, but yes she was much too old. She didn’t look 19, and couldn’t get across Elinor’s vulnerability as a result.

Alan Rickman is everything.

Pemba · 02/11/2018 15:18

Hugh Grant was 35, so again too old, as I think Edward is supposed to be early/mid twenties. But then Alan Rickman was 49, and Colonel Brandon was supposed to be mid/late thirties. He was still gorgeous though!

I suppose you get this all the time, especially with period drama, the story is usually focused on finding a partner, so character are late teens/twenties, but obviously established and skilled actors are often going to be older.

Figgygal · 02/11/2018 15:20

One of my utter favourites
Love AR in it

You'd expect actors generally to be a little older than the characters, but Thompson almost double the age of the character - and then I suppose they had to cast Grant accordingly. I still think Thompson was entirely wrong for it and shouldn't have let herself be persuaded. She's watchable enough, but she's not Austen's Elinor.

I've always viewed Rickman as ageless, so will forgive him!

HolyMountain · 02/11/2018 15:24

boopsy it’s his intense gaze, the voice, the way he rides a horse Wink.

All of it.

Love the bit when Brandon is reading to Mariane in the garden and she doesn't want him to go away is my favourite. And the look on his face when she tells him to come back soon. Confused

AnotherEmma · 02/11/2018 15:27

Yes Emma Thompson was older than the character but as PPs said, so was Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman.

It’s not ideal but they’re such good actors I don’t think it matters.
