Isn’t Alan Rickman so bloody lovely?

Great film.

Love that film and AR is excellent as indeed are all the actors!

JellySlice · 02/11/2018 15:33

Alan Rickman was wasted as Snape. Not that he didn't do a fantastic job, he was a fantastic actor, but he was so bloody type-cast. He always seemed to be the stereotypical villain, yet he played such a fantastic romantic. First time I ever saw him was in Truly Madly Deeply. Wonderful.

MaiaRindell · 02/11/2018 15:38

I love Sense and Sensibility. Yes, they are too old but it's so moving that it doesn't matter. I think Emma Thompson is wonderful doing heartbreak. I think Richard Curtis must have thought so too since she's the only watchable part of Love, Actually.

costacoffeecup · 02/11/2018 15:44

Great film. It's one of my safe place films that I watch again and again when I'm a bit depressed!

BalloonSlayer · 02/11/2018 16:05

Someone I knew waitressed for the close of shoot party for S&S back in the day. She said AR was lovely but "looked 100 years old." Sad

nottakingthisanymore · 02/11/2018 16:11

Wonderful film. AR is just brilliant. But I agree that Emma should not have been cast as Elinor. Apparently she was reluctant to take the role.

betweenhillsandsea · 02/11/2018 18:02

Is it on Netflix? I feel like watching it now

HolyMountain · 02/11/2018 18:14

I watched it on Sky between.

Pure, unadulterated guilty pleasure.

I need to see if it’s on Netflix or prime.

AnotherEmma · 02/11/2018 18:26

Why a guilty pleasure?

LaurieFairyCake · 02/11/2018 18:31

I don't care they're all too old, I'd watch Emma Thomson reading a phone book.

She's a wonderful actress, just mesmerising

LaurieFairyCake · 02/11/2018 18:31

I miss Alan Rickman - he was so liked by absolutely everyone

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/11/2018 18:33

I think Emma's Elinor was aged up to 26, or so I read at the time. The "where is your heart" scene gets me every time, she's superb.

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/11/2018 18:34

And she got Willoughby in real life! Greg Wise was lovely and has aged a lot better than dearest Ken.

LavenderBush · 02/11/2018 18:34

To be fair, Elinor in the book was a very mature 19. So Emma Thompson's appearance was not at odds with the character she was playing.

If she'd played the immature Marianne (technically only 2 years younger) then we'd all have been going wtf.

DowntonCrabby · 02/11/2018 18:36

Adore Rickman in S&S, it’s my favourite novel and makes my top 10 of movies I watch many times a year.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/11/2018 18:39

It’s one of my favourite comfort films. Everyone is perfect in it. Emma Thompson plays Elinor so beautifully that I really don’t care that she’s technically too old for the role - she makes the character her own.

I once started to watch a bizarre BBC version which I had to switch off as the actors were clearly just delivering a pastiche of the film performances and it was painful to listen to.

HolyMountain · 02/11/2018 18:43

I’m now in the mood to re-watch the TV version of Pride and Prejudice.

Possibly my most favourite bbc drama ever

That is such a perfect production, score, filming, casting etc, I won’t hear a word against it!

MissMogwai · 02/11/2018 18:54

One of my favourite books and films. Love Emma Thompson.

Marianne always gets on my nerves, she's such a bloody drip!

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 02/11/2018 19:00

I think Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon may have been partly responsible for my older man phase in my 20s. Bastard Grin

FaithInfinity · 02/11/2018 19:02

I do like it but I felt when watching it that Emma was a bit too old for that role. When I saw it at the cinema I was 15, swooned after Willoughby and was bemused by the idea of Marianne falling for Colonel Brandon but now I am older I totally get it.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/11/2018 19:12

I think I may be the only person in the world who finds the BBC Pride and Prejudice a bit “meh” but loves the Keira Knightley film version 🤔

JellySlice · 02/11/2018 19:15

It was such a joy introducing my 15yo dd to S&S by watching the film with her. I kept having to pause it so that she could SQUEEEEE with delight Grin

Yes, the actors are far too old for the characters, but they are nonetheless beautifully cast, and soooooo talented.

Then we watched the wonderful BBC P&P together, and dd was as entranced.

I'd like to put in a vote for Persuasion, with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. It's just perfect!
