Isn’t Alan Rickman so bloody lovely?

Great film.

I really don't know how to respond to this besides what on earth is wrong with you? You must be the only person in the world who a] dislikes 'clunky old bbc p & p and b] not only loves the film version but especially wooden grimacing 'acts with her teeth' Keira Knightley!

No, she’s not, since I was the one who first made this shocking claim (although I didn’t describe the BBC version as “clunky”). The film version is beautifully directed, the cinematography is gorgeous, the relationship between Darcey and Elizabeth is really well done...and of course, it earned the “wooden grimacing” Knightley an Oscar nod.

I accept that it’s not a popular view but it doesn’t actually mean that anything is wrong with me Hmm Last time I checked, we were allowed to have different opinions on such things...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/11/2018 21:19

Love your name, Living Boy. You clearly have excellent taste in both films and music!

HolyMountain · 02/11/2018 21:34

Calling it the ‘Colin Firth’ one with regards to the BBC adaption of P+P is fucking annoying, yup he’s a Oscar award winning actor etc, etc.

He was terrific of course but it was Jennifer Ehle who absolutely dominated that series, her performance was outstanding .

Such a brilliant actress.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/11/2018 21:43

Must admit I didn't like Jennifer Ehle very much. And is it the BBC one that's got the awful Jane?

byronicheroine · 02/11/2018 21:51

Everyone has to read Jane Austen: The secret radical, by Helena Kelly.
It changes everything! How you see each book when put into the context of the time. I can't recommend it enough.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 02/11/2018 21:57

Does anyone remember a TV movie version of Persuasion with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones? Had a brilliant cast. And Rupert is always lovely to watch.

InfiniteVariety · 02/11/2018 22:04

There are 2 Alan Rickman films on TV this weekend:

"Truly Madly Deeply" which was the first thing I think I ever saw him in
and
"Eye in the Sky", the last film he ever made which I have never managed to see up to now.

I shall be watching both

Magmatic80 · 02/11/2018 22:05

The dvd is that persuasion is sitting in top of my tv right now 😍

allthatmalarkey · 02/11/2018 22:05

Agree on Rupert PJ and Persuasion, but Sally H didn't do it for me. Still have seen the right Anne Elliot.

Re the age of the actors, Elinor is supposed to be past it, isn't she, which for the time would have been over 25. And everyone would have aged more quickly then and looked older faster than we do now because of less healthy diet/lifestyle/sanitation and no makeup/not having modern skincare?? Was that feeble? I really want it to be alright that Emma Thompson played Elinor and Hugh and Alan etc.

Sewrainbow · 02/11/2018 22:06

I love that persuasion, Rupert penry Jones was gorgeous.

I also love S&S, whilst the actors were all too old they played the characters very well. I loved that book and can still remember the first time I read it as a teen, I couldn't put it down Grin

InfiniteVariety · 02/11/2018 22:08

Elinor is 19 in S&S allthatmalarkey

Varmints · 02/11/2018 22:10

One of my favourite films AR an excellent actor Sad

allthatmalarkey · 02/11/2018 22:11

Oh. Ok. It's a while since I read it.

The actors are always too old in these things. Amanda Root actually seemed too mature for a Anne Elliot and she is definitely over the hill at, er, 27?

allthatmalarkey · 02/11/2018 22:14

The chap who played Darcy in the Fay Weldon P&P of the early 80s now does the voices for various characters on Peppa Pig. Granddad Dog and the bull, I think.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 02/11/2018 22:22

The ONLY good thing about the 2005 version is Rosamund Pike as Jane.

THIS.

Blackberry10 · 03/11/2018 00:29

Do we think marianne and Brandon would have been happy?
Also agree that Jane in the bbc pride and prejudice was awful

Pemba · 03/11/2018 00:37

Yes Marianne and Brandon might have been happy, if she got over her prejudice about his age and stopped thinking of him as ancient. He was definitely a very romantic soul.

Mind you, 20 year old Kate Winslet and 49 year old Alan Rickman, he could certainly have been her dad, so that might be thought of as a bit creepy (not that AR could ever have been creepy).

MissLingoss · 03/11/2018 00:42

I'd like to put in a vote for Persuasion, with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. It's just perfect!

I love that version too. So true to the book, and a lovely cast.

(You can keep your Darcys, give me Captain Wentworth!)

Kernowgal · 03/11/2018 08:04

I'm still sniggering at 'Colin Girth' Grin

I ended up watching P&P last night and it was enjoyable enough, but i saw the Ehle/Firth BBC version in my formative years and it's my favourite by far.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 03/11/2018 08:19

I loved David Rintoul as Darcy.

AR as Brandon too old but so dreamy.

But Ciaran Hinds as Captain Wentworth is my favourite Austen hero.

nottakingthisanymore · 03/11/2018 08:32

I can’t believe people prefer KK version of P and P. Keira never opens her mouth to speak. In every film she is in she talks through gritted teeth. She is IMO a terrible actress and ruined several films for me. Most notably atonement.
I lasted about 20 mins of her version of P and P. Nothing comes close to the brilliance of Jennifer and Colin.
My only criticism of bbc p and p is Lydia is a bit much at times.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/11/2018 08:43

I can’t believe people prefer KK version of P and P.

And yet we do...

I can’t believe people find it so hard to believe that their world-view might not be the only one.

OliviaStabler · 03/11/2018 08:50

@InfiniteVariety

Eye in the Sky is excellent. Absolutely gripping. You won't be dissapointed. I've seen it a few times now.

If you like Alan, watch the film Dogma which stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon but don't watch it if you get offended about religion. Hilarious and funny but will offend some.

Clankboing · 03/11/2018 09:34

I have loads to do today. But I stopped it all because of this thread and watched the whole of S&S. Beautiful.

MaiaRindell · 03/11/2018 09:53

In the BBC version, Jane was mis-cast. If only we could slot Rosamund Pike into that adaptation. Mr Bingley is weak. I can't stand Julia Swahla or Alison Steadman in this - but maybe we are supposed to cringe at them so it could be intentional. But Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth are wonderful. I love Mr Collins and Lady Catherine too.
