I hear a lot about this generation not getting on the property ladder and it is a big problem. I was amazed when both dc finished uni, got jobs and bought houses within 2 years of graduating.
To avoid drip feed
Yes they are mortgaged
They both bought with partners

What year?

In 2010 and again in 2025, most recently starting from scratch with little deposit, in SE.

I have to say - how?

How did you buy at 19 in The SE with no help?

It's very impressive

Only when you do the AMA.

Deposit.
incomes.
area.

for all 4 of them.

Exactly. A bit difficult in South East. Maybe easier further North. Deposits or shared ownership?

giving you benefit of doubt 🤡🙄 as a mother myself. You need to find other “stealth” goals. Sad times for you 🫣 genuinely hope you find fulfilling things maybe emotionally and purposefully 🙏❤️

That's quite a telling username you have there.

Would they be able to buy houses if they had no partner?

You said they got no help, but they did get help from their partners.

Everyone knows it is much easier to live and save with two incomes coming into one house.

I would like to see a thread about a single person buying a house alone.

Why don’t you start one?

being in a partnership is not seen as help, the help would come from outside

user1471554720 · 12/06/2026 09:34

You are naive if you think being in a partnership is not seen aa help. You own a house jointly with your partner and pay half. It would be prohibitive for a lot of people to pay for a full house themselves out of one salary.

Jointly buying a house gives people a chance to own a house that they might not otherwise have got.

of course jointly purchasing a house gives both a chance to own a home they might not otherwise have qualified for a mortgage

but one isn't helping they other, they are mutual partners and have found a solution to getting a mortgage and buying a house

what was original meant was help from someone not purchasing the house to live in, a lump sum from a relative or friend, who wasn't on the deeds to the property

I mean factually it is where the money is.

There is literally no arguing that.

It's not the ONLY place where the money is though!

as in, it's perfectly possible to earn a good, including significantly above average, wage everywhere in the country. Are there more higher paying jobs in London, yes, of course, but there are are politicians, consultants, CEOs, chief executives, etc, not to mention your bog standard doctors, headteachers, accountants, barristers, living all over the UK!

It's not like London's streets are paved with gold and everyone else is working down t'mines!

TheBlissfulSloth · 13/06/2026 11:05

It's never been the norm for the average person to buy alone. And I don't need replies telling me they bought on their own. I know it's possible (I did!) But it's never been the norm.
