I hear a lot about this generation not getting on the property ladder and it is a big problem. I was amazed when both dc finished uni, got jobs and bought houses within 2 years of graduating.
To avoid drip feed
Yes they are mortgaged
They both bought with partners

Foreign buyers.

At that level yes a lot will be, but there will still be a number of Brits in the market.

Agree
Most of Mayfair is part of the Grosvenor estate
so The Duke of Westminster

I think.

  1. Being so close to London. Now people may love or loathe London - but from a business point of view it is a global power and incredibly important for a lot of industries.

  2. Airports. Heathrow is one of the best connected airports in the world. We had a friends who moved to an absolutely beautiful part of Norfolk - but the husband had to travel to Singapore twice a month - and another 3.5 hours on his journey each way got too much for him.

  3. It has a standard of theater, shopping, dining etc you don't get anywhere in the country.

  4. It's where the big money is.

I love getting out of The South East to peace and quiet, and when kids are at uni we will split time between here and our holiday home.

But lets not pretend there aren't major advantages to living near London and The South East. If there wasn't - there wouldn't be such a premium to live here.

Doesn't interest me interest me. Sorry!

But it's not a rip off.

Well why all the moaning on this thread?

Differentforgirls · 09/06/2026 12:20

SacrutiMonkey · 09/06/2026 10:27

This is why the SE and London are, in my opinion, like Sodom and Gomorrah.
No offence to anyone living there.

Never change, Mumsnet 😂

Well they are! 😂

Differentforgirls · 09/06/2026 12:22

coulditbeme2323 · 09/06/2026 11:37

I wouldn't choose to live in a flat in Mayfair, but I understand why they can cost 40 million quid.

😱

Differentforgirls · 09/06/2026 12:39

This has been, imo, an interesting thread.

It's a shame that the posts at the start were so judgy and dismissive of a MUM being proud of her children, considering this is MUMSnet.

So much so that she left the thread. Awful behaviour from women who appear to have more money than sense.

But it's been good to see people who have the same values as me, and people whose values are the polar opposite.

Oh I don't deny there are advantages. But I'm not sure they are are so massive they justify some of the arsy comments on this thread.
Sure, you can list more theatres, better transport etc, but tbh they sound rather lame and do not justify the massive premium and the blind faith many have that they live in absolutely the right place and everyone else who thinks it's not worth paying five times the price for a house so that you don't have to travel so far to an airport is clearly thick and uncultured and have never left their village.

This. Plus the irony of people who live in London/SE who think they're more cultured/better educated/more worldly than people who live in northern England while being unapologetically ignorant about the rest of the country and the wealth of amenities, arts & culture, good jobs, history etc etc that people who live there have access to.

Insular, then paint themselves as "travelers" who don't seem to have travelled anywhere in the whole of the UK except London and the SE.

It doesn't mean I want to live there, but it's not hard to understand why London is priced the way it is.

It's not. It's subjective. It's a draw to you. It's boring to me and others.

No idea how you’ve come to that conclusion

Perhaps mumsnetters on here could tell us how much theyve travelled around the U.K. I’m not aware anyone has

I can only speak for myself, but I am not saying London is better - but there is a reason why it's so expensive.

This isn't exclusive to The UK. It's true of almost every country in the world.

I agree with a lot of your posts tbh.

I would rather live in Maine than New York, but I understand why New York is more expensive.

I can totally understand why some people would rather live in The Yorkshire Moors or Scottish Highlands than London or The South East - but there will always be a premium to live near a global power.
