My home town gets a lot of bad press but I am a proud Bradfordian, so ask me anything. I'm happy to discuss all the awful rumours that you've heard about this place 😊

OP if it's AMA you need to answer the questions?I'm intrigued to hear if it's true that Bradford is no longer nice?that's so sad if so.

I've heard it's a nightmare and there are gangs of feral youths, dugs, child grooming, incest, forced marriage and areas the police won't touch as it's too dangerous. Hopefully the OP can clarify.

Cybernetics · 21/09/2024 18:11

Thank you for all the comments and questions. I am out so I will respond in detail later. I appreciate that there are positive comments and I regret that I put a negative slant on my original post as it is my home and I love it! I'll be back this evening.

I visited Bradford for the theatre recently and I was surprised by the number of women wearing full face coverings. Is this common?

Yes and it has been that way for the last 4 decades.

What awful rumours? It's a lot nicer than Rochdale or Halifax 😂

I grew up in Halifax and it was a bit grim back then but its quite fancy now (bits of it anyway)

BingyBongyBoo · 21/09/2024 18:27

I’m thinking of moving to live near Bradford as it’s cheaper than where I live now (still Yorkshire) and I can halve my mortgage, work part time and work from a central Bradford office. Seems like a win win. I know it but not that well. I’ve been looking at rightmove today.

Can you tell me where you like/think is a place you’d like to live, within 5 miles of a train station, view of the hills, thanks 🙏.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 21/09/2024 18:27

Bradford is OK.
I should do a Keighley version of AMA🤣

You need to get your info from somewhere that isn't an EDL Facebook group...

Maybe I should. Any recommendations?

Is the Museum of Film and Photography still there?

And is it still ace?

I recommend following some social media accounts about Bradford 2025 and the capital of culture. You see a side of Bradford that isn't often talked about: artsy, vibrant, inclusive. There's so much theatre: Theatre in the Mill, Kala Sangam. Alhambra.

Bradford Literature Festival has an amazing programme and is internationally recognised as a major festival of its kind.

It is possible to not fall for divisive stereotypes if you really want to.

I was going to ask the exact same thing. I went as a child and 'flew' on a flying carpet.

tonyhawks23 · 21/09/2024 18:48

Oh hebden bridge was lovely, and I can't even remember why we'd go there now.glad to hear the bad stuff may not be true.i think it was capital of culture when I lived there so must be doing something right if still full of fabulous culture and diversity.

SlivedAvocado · 21/09/2024 18:48

Do women still get harassed openly on the street? As an 18 year old up from the country for university being called a 'white bitch' was extremely shocking, and it happened a fair few times back in the 90s.

Having said that, I absolutely loved my time in Bradford, for the most part the citizens across the board were friendly and welcoming and the curries amazing!

I wasn't talking about stereotypes, I was talking about news I've read over the years. I've never been there but I've heard a lot of bad stuff about the place.

It obviously gets a bad press because I've never heard anything positive about the place. I've read accounts from taxi drivers who won't go to certain areas because there are gangs of young people with bats who throw bricks and smash windows.

Locals have said that the child grooming is still going on and no one is doing anything. I also read a report that said Bradford had high incidents of child death due to close family marrying.

If none of that is true, I'm happy to be corrected.

Do it! We used to go out there back in the day, I can’t imagine it’s changed much 😂

tonyhawks23 · 21/09/2024 18:50

Oh well if you haven't been there!I'm holding on to it still being wonderful then.lot of nonsense on the news sometimes.

All 2nd hand hearsay then.
Bradford has its issues, like a lot of towns that have been forgotten and ignored by London but it has nothing negative going on that is unique to The City.

Needmorelego · 21/09/2024 19:05

@Scentedjasmin the flying carpet is about the only bit of the museum I remember 😂

Bingley is nice.

Harden is nice too but more expensive.

That's why I'm asking questions on AMA. To find out if what I've heard is right.

Deadhouseplant · 21/09/2024 19:31

I’d rather live in Bradford than Hebden Bridge. It’s changed a lot. It’s full of smug BBC types during the week then gets swamped by stag dos at the weekend. Bring back the hippies and lesbians please Hebden Bridge!
