My home town gets a lot of bad press but I am a proud Bradfordian, so ask me anything. I'm happy to discuss all the awful rumours that you've heard about this place 😊

OP posts:

A friend of mine recently moved to Bradford City Centre, beautiful cheap flat, the centre is lovely especially the Will Alsop designed Mirror Pool.

The museum is still there, it’s having a major redevelopment atm, was always great and will be better when completed.

Friendly locals, cheap good food, what’s not to like?

poppyzbrite4 · 21/09/2024 14:53

Are there no go areas where the police won't get involved?

Is there child grooming going on that noone stops?

Theres child grooming in EVERY town

That's news to me. Gangs of sexual predators roaming EVERY town in the UK. Openly picking up girls outside schools, from care homes and off the streets then trafficking them and prostituting them in EVERY town in the UK?!

Beamur · 21/09/2024 19:47

Bradford is, and has always been a complicated place.
Fabulous countryside, lovely canal, museums, the best parks, really good value housing, good public transport, vibrant arts and culture scene but - poverty, crime, a city centre that always struggles compared to its neighbours.
I used to live in the district in my 20's and was very happy there, felt safe, I still like it a lot but it feels less safe now..
I'm going to ask a question! Bradford is famous for it's food. Which is the best curry house? My vote is downstairs at the Kashmir

EscapeToTheCuntTree · 21/09/2024 19:56

Bradfordian here and I don't enjoy living here. Saving to move. You have to drive so carefully. OP can you rate the driving out of 10? Also what's the funniest thing you have seen here. Have you seen the man on the mobility scooter with his DJ type set up, playing polka type music in the city centre with people dancing to it? He isn't there anymore. I miss it.

On some level, yes, this is going on I every town.

Nonsense. There is obviously child sexual abuse going on across the UK, but there aren't gangs of sexual predators in every town. Unless of course you have the evidence to back that up.

Deadhouseplant · 21/09/2024 20:04

There IS child abuse happening all over the country but let’s be clear, PPs are talking about the targeting of one ethnic group (white poor girls) by another ethnic group. We should be able to talk about this without the usual accusations.

Wonderlust233 · 21/09/2024 20:05

I think Bradford is quite nice. Really pretty in many areas and great food. People are friendly.

I did not say tracking and prostituting amd taking them from schools and care homes…

But adult men that work in shops and take aways taking advantage of young teenage girls, YES!

Do you have the evidence backing up your claim that there are gangs of sexual predators raping, drugging and trafficking in every town in the UK?

I'm not talking about child sexual abuse which does sadly happen everywhere, I'm talking about gangs of men.

Drinkdrinkduuurink · 21/09/2024 20:17

Needmorelego · 21/09/2024 19:05

@Scentedjasmin the flying carpet is about the only bit of the museum I remember 😂

The set from The Wrong Trousers is in the museum, which was fortunate as the other Wallace & Gromit sets were destroyed in the Aardman studio fire in Bristol.

AGAIN

I did NOT say drugging and trafficking

Obviously there isnt ‘Evidence’

AGAIN - Im talking about men in shops and take aways taking advantage of young teenage girls
It happens everywhere - Talk to EVERY police force in England and they will tell you yes there are allegations but no ‘evidence’ to do anything
They are very clever ‘Men’

tonyhawks23 · 21/09/2024 20:21

If we are voting on best curry I have to ask if omars is still there?
I'm assuming from your username OP that your a student?is the peace cafe still there?

DryBiscuit · 21/09/2024 20:22

Do you know Dr Amir Khan?

I love him

Needmorelego · 21/09/2024 20:22

@Drinkdrinkduuurink I think I went to the museum before The Wrong Trousers had even be released.

AGAIN I'm not talking about child sexual abuse in that sense, I'm talking about GROOMING GANGS. There were grooming gangs in Bradford and the surrounding area and quite a few of the men have been caught. I've been told that the GANGS are still grooming children. I'm asking if that's the case.

Bradford is on the route home from my parents. Driving there is the worst I've seen in the UK. Too many boy racers in fast cars late at night and serious accidents posted weekly on the local police FB page.

There used to be a fab one - about 30 years ago - where the upstairs was really posh and that was where the South Asian businessy-type customers ate, but down in the basement it was full of students, cheap as chips and you could see the curries being cooked in front of you - my mouth waters remembering it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/09/2024 21:01

The National Museum of Film and Photography is now under the Science Museum umbrella, and is called the National Media Museum. Its recently bet refurbed. I havn't been since it has been done up, but it's always been a great museum to me, with excellent visiting exhibitions.

The Alhambra Theatre just over the road is fab too. We're going to see Hamilton there in Feb.

What’s not to like ?
Well, the mirror pool is a hang out for criminals, sex offenders and drug users. It’s occasionally used as a place to bathe horses. The library behind the mirror pool is sadly less a library, more a warm refuge for the homeless (which is needed as the homeless problem in Bradford is massive).
If you do find a spot near the mirror pool, you’ll likely have to move quickly before you’re mowed down by kids on motorbikes.
If you’re a woman, especially a young one in revealing clothes, you will not be able to sit alone for five minutes without being approached or harassed. The area across from the mirror pool is a congregation point for drug dealers and alcoholics, and the police are powerless to deal with it. There is always violence there.
I work in Bradford, I’ve lost count of the amount of police cordons for violent crimes in the city I’ve stumbled across on my daily walk through the centre. And we’re talking murders/ stabbings.
And drugs. The drug problems are insane.
I moved into an office where a small nook in the gate meant that the courtyard had been used by heroin users. It was in a fairly nice block , but it took our caretaker days to clear the drug paraphernalia. Bins and bins of needles. Equally worrying are the little nos cannisters which are everywhere.
There is nowhere in the centre I’d feel safe walking alone at night.
A couple of weeks ago I walked through Forster square station in the daytime. It was about 11am . There was a trail of blood and bloody footprints across the whole station.
Now we can talk of culture, of the wonderful things Bradford has to offer. Yes the efforts for 2025 have been amazing. The literature festival is fabulous. There are amazing collections, brilliant resources , stunning architecture, delicious food. But until we make it safe enough for people to walk through the streets, it’s all built on very shaky foundations.

Was the flying carpet thing that film about America Bill Bryson talks about in his Notes from a Small Island book? He describes it so lovingly. Can you still see that?

timetodecide2345 · 21/09/2024 21:12

Is the ice rink still there? I have fond memories of going with my daughter.

The Waterstones in Leeds is miles better than the Bradford one.

But not anywhere near as beautiful.

The Wool Exchange is a lovely building, lots of mad gothic twiddly bits - never knowingly under-embellished. That great vaulted ceiling and gorgeous pillars - I love an excuse to spend an afternoon there.
