My home town gets a lot of bad press but I am a proud Bradfordian, so ask me anything. I'm happy to discuss all the awful rumours that you've heard about this place 😊

Do you know what would have really helped support integration?

If South Asian men in the 70's weren't "p* bashed" for being brown. Communities relied on each other to survive.

That wouldn't help obviously, but the roots of lack of integration go deeper. It's probably a lot to do with the original generation wanting to preserve their culture, and protect it from what they regarded, and many still do, as decadent and immoral. Being regarded in that light would not have encouraged white people, presumably to extend a welcome. As an outside observer for many years, I think both communities should have made a lot more effort to interact, and where necessary to criticise the culture of the other in an effort to open communication and debate.

You are right. That’s what kicks it off from inception, the attitude when you first arrive to work, all alone, language barriers, the unknown and then you have to overcome the hostility and unapproachability of some. And then you form your own tribe, your safe space, what is familiar to you in terms of language, appearance and culture etc. But now we are in 2024 and Thank Goodness a lot has changed for the generations that came after but the harmonious communication and integration with people from different races, have basic conversations, finding common ground, some respect for neighbours, unfortunately a sense of entitlement and selfishness is apparent in the later generations instead of bridging the gap and filling the void that their parents could not due to other factors. Hope I making sense. Not trying to be critical, its just my own experiences too and I am a very proud Bradfordian and I want ALL our people to come together and tell the world who pees on us to get lost and unite against the hatefulness we get as a city!

Is the Museum of Film and Photography still there?

Yes.. but it's having a refurbishment and new design etc.. be open 2025

40andlovelife · 29/10/2024 22:26

Do they still do those amazing chips at the train station?

Dolly567 · 29/10/2024 22:43

I am from Bradford too. Lived here my whole life!
It has become worse over the years, we will look to move when our children are a little older!

I grew up in Shipley! The Connection was literally the best restaurant in the world, it was like going to America or something. They had a video jukebox and Tenesse grasshopper pie for dessert.

I went to BGGS, and BGS sixth form. I remember the Jesus man! I snogged my first boy outside the ice rink, and my second outside Tumblers.

I see the magic carpet at the photography museum has been mentioned already, but does anyone remember the scratch and sniff pizza? Or that if you rubbed your shoes on the carpet you could give your friends electric shocks?

RampantIvy · 02/11/2024 23:52

The Agraah in Shipley was my favourite Indian restaurant.

We used to love The Damn Yankee in Guiseley as well.

Well done for effectively excusing violent racism and engaging in some casual victim blaming instead.

I think I’ve read the whole thread and seen no recommendations of Lister park and its gallery. We also like the salts mills and it’s David Hockney.

There are obviously problems with Bradford and the Born in Bradford has highlighted some of them. Namely the health inequalities which are shown in a 10 year life expectancy difference between the rich areas of Bradford and the poor areas. And the impact of multi generational cousin marriage.

We have moved away now (for family) but I never had any problems living there and it was incredibly cheap so the kids had a really good quality of life. We’re now in an expensive area and they get less opportunities to eat out, play etc.

The Aagrah was right next door to The Connection if I remember correctly. They'd give the women a carnation flower when you paid the bill.

And yes the art gallery in Lister Park - Cartwright Hall. I used to bunk off lessons in 6th form and smoke fags by the lake, then go to the cafe in Cartwright Hall for buttered toast.

Salt's Mill for the Hockney collection and just Saltaire itself, well worth a visit for sure. I went to Albert Road primary school in Saltaire.

Yes, they did. They did this when they opened a branch in Pudsey as well.Loved Cartrwright Hall and Saltaire. We once did a Sunday lunch narrow boat trip from Saltaire to Bingley Five Rise and back.

We used to have some friends in Idle, and my dad asked me to take a photo of Idle Working Man's Club for him Grin

VoodooQualities · 03/11/2024 22:32

I had my Saturday job at the Idle Morrisons, at 5 Lane Ends!

They tried to put me on the fishmongers so I fibbed and told them I was allergic, so they put me on the rotisserie chickens instead thank goodness.

I must say, I'm thoroughly enjoying this little trip down memory lane.

The fish counter at Five Lane Ends Morrisons was awful. I once bought some fish from there and when it was cooked it was obvious it was off.

I think it will be great to have a new platform at Forster Square. More trains to London and a car park to leave your car at makes travel more convenient. There is one near the interchange but it’s a more busier part of the city centre.

I worked on the original expansion project when the wavy glazing was put on the front of the Museum, loads of new galleries, and a new cinema.

When I heard that the museum is currently closed I felt a bit miffed. What was wrong with what we did? And then I realised that was 25 years ago 😳😭

Great times, best job ever.

Rainee123 · 15/11/2024 00:10

For any runners/ walkers , Lister Park has a lovely parkrun every Saturday. Great to see people of all backgrounds getting involved, always a friendly atmosphere.

I love this thread! I haven’t been to Bradford before but am visiting next Spring. I’m looking forward to my visit, particularly as I think Bradford will be so different to where I live at the moment. It’s lovely to hear people’s memories of growing up in the area. Thank you.
