Because it is the fear of public attacks that makes these organisations change their policies

Bit like dedsec group from the watchdogs games ?

Look at the normal opinion polls, and surveys such as yougov, and organisations such as that - once you have 15 % support, you will start to impact on government and economic policies, but we have way over that, over 20% normally, and rising. We also have less opposition than you might think, although the opposition can be very vocal.

Basically, huge numbers of people quietly agree with us ( more than 40%), around 20% will say they strongly agree, and around 15% will strongly disagree. I am writing these numbers from memory from the last report I heard.

Right so just made up research then. Ok.

Hawkins009 · 01/08/2023 00:41

@Market1 what if the intelligence services, all banded together, nsa, CIA, mi5/6 etc to effectively quash any illegal activities ?

Market1 · 01/08/2023 00:41

GlitchStitch · 01/08/2023 00:34

Did you agree with XR leaders about the Canning Town tube protest when they admitted it was a big mistake? For me that just showed utter contempt and ignorance, and was the real nail in the coffin for any support towards XR from most people.

don't know anything about this protest in particular,

Some people are speaking about protests I don't know anything about - as I said, anyone can do anything under the ER flag- there is no membership.

There is a set of principles, and if you adhere to the principles, you can get ER legal support, but that doesn't mean these different protest groups know each other, or have any contact at all before arrest.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/08/2023 00:42

the number of people killed by climate change is millions, ( literally MILLIONS) of times higher than the number of people likely to die in a ER protest.

I am just one person getting medical treatment, and the problem of environmental damage affects not only the future of billions of people, but also the future of billions of animals and plants as well

This excuse is always trotted out by those who harm others. Even absolute monsters think they are serving the greater good and are justified.

I can't imagine thinking my views on any issue were so clever it gives me an excuse to harm others until they listen.

I don't know! People would still protest, I expect

To be honest, we need a rallying call for the intelligence services.
Protesting is one thing but not when it's blocking roads.

BrunoMarzipan · 01/08/2023 00:47

Ooh and why do you block the traffic? It's not just annoying for the drivers, it's making more fumes, and not everyone going to hospital is in an ambulance. I'm genuinely asking.

Seems strange to me, and a bit of a cop out. You're going to claim proud allegiance to this group at the same time as saying anyone can do anything under their flag and you can then just distance yourself from the bits you don't like 🤷‍♀️

Ridiculousradish · 01/08/2023 00:17

I think XR lost a lot of public respect when they pissed about annoying ordinary folk. Not helpful. You cannot gain public support when you negativity impact people's lives. You're targeting the wrong people.

I agree and when l hear about XR or JSO causing havoc l think they turn people against the very thing they
are protesring about.
I have no time for them at all.

WhateverMate · 01/08/2023 00:51

I'm still waiting for a link to your research OP that claims all research we have indicates we are turning more people towards our cause.

I mean without running around all over the internet and adding up lots of different polls willy nilly.

I am telling you the reality of it. People might want to know what ER is really life from the inside, hence the AMA. No other ER activist would know me, or know my name, we have no membership, and we don't use real names. That is what it is actually like!

Annoyingnamechangerperson · 01/08/2023 00:54

Not a question but I don’t know how any organisation can justify not allowing ‘ordinary’ people seeking medical help to pass, causing distress upset and deterioration of their condition.
You say if they make themselves known they can pass but why should someone have to divulge their medical information to strangers to access their legal right to healthcare.
Justifying the actions of these protestors by saying it saying it’s for the future of humanity will feel like a massive insult to the people who have come to harm due to these protesters not allowing them to pass.

Where is the humanity for the people right in front of the protestors eyes.

So it's like how the dedsec cells are from watchdogs.
All fly under the banner of the dedsec but each cell has there own goals, missions etc, that can vary from each other.

Yeah, pretty sure you're telling us your own personal 'reality' of it and when you're faced with a difficult question or statement, you simply wave your hand and say 'Oh but anyone can join, so that's them doing bad things, not 'us'.

Pointless really if that's your stock reply.

Plus, how on earth do you simply 'pass' miles of bloody traffic that's built up in front of you??

more people are not put at risk because a road is closed, fewer people are. More people don't die because of protests, fewer people do.

You could equally argue you don't understand why these roads are ever allowed to be open at all, the number of deaths they cause.

How many of the people who protest (especially the middle aged and older) have travelled extensively in the past, or have several children, or live in large houses that take a great deal of heating - and how many of the younger members have latched onto ER as a cause and will go on to do these things once they move on from youthful protesting and settle into adult life? And how much experience of living in a rural setting with no public transport do many ER supporters have?

Sorry, I know it is goady to ask these questions but I think current policy (particularly in relation to electric cars) is ill thought out and unrealistic. Change is necessary but often it is knee jerk and headline grabbing rather than considered holistically (eg lithium mining sustainability and the overall carbon footprint of production), and ultimately meaningless if other countries don’t reduce their consumption.

I don't mind defending our cause, but I did start this thinking people would be more interested in what it is like to be arrested, how the police treat us, what happens in court, etc.

@Market1 how can ER and Just Stop Oil supporters afford to take time off work to protest?

NightShiftDrama · 01/08/2023 01:03

What transport do you arrange past the blockages?

What does it consist of?

TomeTome · 01/08/2023 01:04

What is “extinction rebellion”?
