To anyone who thinks their lives have been made worse by XR actions

I am fucking furious that the lack of climate action has guaranteed my life will be much worse

So tit for tat - you screw them, they will screw you

But when you screw the planet you screw yourself too

Hard working person just trying to get to work to earn money to feed their family ?
How are you planning to protect your family from food inflation ? I mean if you are struggling now ....?

So please could you direct that specifically at the people on this thread who have shared their experiences of

  1. Being unable to reach her grieving mother when her father had died
  2. Having children in need of emergency hospital care to prevent them from lifelong disabilities
  3. Needing treatment for life-threatening cancer

And tell them, specifically and individually, that you see it as "tit for tat" and that you think their additional suffering and the harm caused to them is OK?

Thank you @Superfood I think the ratio on this thread suggests that many people understand my views.

I absolutely agree we need to act I’m just not convinced by the effectiveness of civil disruption.

You're welcome. X

I think most of us support the broad aims of this movement, but its actions are massively counterproductive. Just reeks of overprivileged, self-satisfied people acting like twats for Internet likes with no evidence of it being effective where it really matters.

Proudly driving a diesel care
Do you realise or appreciate how hard it is living In A rural part of the country where there isn't the infrastructure for electric cars? Having a diesel or petrol care is essential.
Electric cars are far too much money.
Sorry but I have to earn a living and work to survive I don't don't give a shit about the environment

bustandboom · 05/08/2023 12:29

And how many of you go on holiday on a plane?!

I agreed with you until you said

"I don't give a shit about the environment"

It appears that most of you are middle to upper middle class so presumably you've all probably had a much higher carbon heavy lifestyle growing up then many of us working class people and also less personal problems to worry about.
Is this why you home in on finding problems, because your lives are so privileged and easy that you instinctively feel the need to create drama in your otherwise calm and privileged easy lives?

Hardly 🙄

Thank you for what you do. If I was braver I would be by your side. You will be shown to be on the right side of history.

Xenia · 05/08/2023 19:47

Hopefully we can change the law even more to make it harder for them to walk on roads (which are meant for cars and bikes).
Apparently they want massive distruption from 29 October with 3000 take part so hopefully the police can infiltrate that and those against them and put a stop to it before it happens.

Indigotree · 05/08/2023 19:59

Just wanted to say thank you for everything you and other protestors are doing for us.

I don't have the capacity/resources in my life to join in at the moment, but am hoping to in the future, although of course I'd rather there was no need.

I think it's imperative that XR makes it clear, publicly, that they do not obstruct ambulances, though, as the misinformation about that has spread and people are latching onto it rather than doing more about global warming.

They can say they don’t obstruct ambulances till they’re blue in the face - there is video evidence widely shared online that they do exactly that

Indigotree · 05/08/2023 20:07

loislovesstewie · 02/08/2023 17:48

@MrsCarson I agree with you, the point is they have no answers about how 'the little people' can actually run their lives in safety , with some enjoyment and without returning to some pre industrial existence.

There's a huge amount of research into alternatives in technology, planning, construction, transport, agriculture, you name it. Just too much investment in fossil fuels and too much disinformation.

There's really no shortage of information on how we can do these things if you look it up.

I thought it had been proven to be fake?

What was fake? The ambulance, protestors, angry crowd?

There’s more than one video…

Xenia · 06/08/2023 10:03

Ambulances appear to have been held up but that is not the issue. Roads are for those in cars or cycling and not people walking slowly and they should be removed immediately and face punitive fines, confiscation of their iphones etc etc to pay for the financial costs to those delayed from getting to work. They think their views are so important that they can stop traffic. People have all kinds of views. I think tax is far too high but I don't stop traffic on the M25 to protest.

Darker · 06/08/2023 12:48

Xenia - climate change will affect us all and big businesses/ politicians are just too profit-driven to do what needs doing.

Democracy offers us the right to protest - and I applaud people who have the courage to exercise that right in such a hostile landscape.

yellowspanner · 06/08/2023 13:07

You should all be arrested, charged and given long prison sentences. Your views are no more important than mine.
I hope the government change the law to outlaw your organisation

Do you really want a law that makes protesting a criminal offence?

Do you actually have any views? Have you looked outside the window over the last few weeks?

crackofdoom · 03/08/2023 20:21

XR had a "long march" in 2019- I joined them for a few legs. Didn't get a lot of publicity, did it? 🙄

There's a reason people do things designed to make headlines.

Making headlines isn’t enough though is it? How long have these protests been going on, 4 or 5 years? And in that time what has been achieved? Sod all.

Have you ever protested anything yourself? Can you imagine a cause that you would protest for?

Do you have any suggestions on how people can protest instead?

loislovesstewie · 06/08/2023 14:52

So, we now have protesters disrupting a cycle race in Scotland, and apparently there are plans to disrupt football matches this season. I mean, can't anyone see that going very wrong?
