Stuck in Rhodes

TooTrusting · 23/07/2023 08:47

I was just east of Gennadi, 5 minutes away, at Atlantica Dreams resort (Tui). All day yesterday there was a steady stream of evacuated guests from other hotels arriving.
The fire seemed to die down at around 3pm. But by 7 it was raging again.
We were told one of us needed to stay up all night to listen gif the evacuation siren.
There were hundreds of evacuees there by then.
Just before 10pm we were evacuated. We walked to the road where there was a coach and some cattle trucks. It was chaos and hard not to be separated from my DCs (23, 19, 17 & 17). We had no idea where we were going. I had to calm and keep company 2 distraught children (circa 14 and 8) who had got separated from their parents. I lost a shoe and one DC their phone. We had to jettison the one small cabin size suitcase we had brought our essentials in.
Our truck broke down and we walked about a mile, again not knowing where we were going, and were eventually directed onto Gennadi beach. There were around 2000 people there all crammed together. Small boats, capacity around 10, went back and forth between ferry boats and the shore. There was no Dunkirk spirit. People were tired, upset and frightened. Some had not slept for 2 nights.

It took 4 hours until we finally managed to get on one at around 2. It was bedlam with everyone shoving and barging. I was separated from the DCs several times. Nobody knew where we were going.

We were on the ferry around 4 hours before arriving in Rhodes Town at c6.30am. We sailed through ash clouds and people had towels tied round their faces. People were taken off in different buses. We ended up in a school with 150 others. But there was nothing there for us, no beds, mats, washing facilities or food and it was boiling hot.
There was no list so the authorities have no idea who has gone where. It is a total lie for Tui to say they have re accommodated everyone. They have not. They have no idea where I am and until their phone lines open I cannot contact them either. The only info we have been given is an FCO number for advice on travel and consular assistance (which we don't need).
Luckily I have 24 hour insurance access and when I'd re charged my phone was able to establish I am covered (was worried it would be an "act of God"). I have booked a hotel for 1 night, after a long search. I've just arrived - it's chaos with everyone sleeping on the floor.
Just before we left the school a band of volunteers arrived laden with food and one of them thinks our hotel may have been burned down and we are unlikely to get back to try to retrieve our stuff. She says Gennadi is mostly gone.

We leave on Wednesday. We can't check in here til 2 and need to go and buy clothes and essentials. All we have is what we are standing in.

Op myself and many others seem to have reported posts esp those attacking your dd.
This is a traumatic crisis situation and this site is to give support.

The best thing to do is report and ignore.

The world cannot afford 1 single unnecessary plane journey more

Best tell all those who'll be flying - many of them no doubt on private aircraft - to COP28 in the UAE
Maybe even mention it to the President, Sultan al Jaber, who (hilariously) happens to be an oil CEO

Probably wise not to say they could perfectly well have held their conference electronically though; after all they're hardly going to forego all that lovely hospitality on their latest jolly

You’ll be surprised to hear I didn’t arrange COP, nor does it going ahead cancel the environmental impact of other people. ‘Oh but so and so is doing’ is why we’re here

letthemalldoone · 24/07/2023 14:37

What a good idea. Let's kill off tourism! Climate change will matter less because nobody furrein will be going to such hot places anyway!! So what if the locals are left in poverty... rolls eyes furiously

As for that wan whose mind was blown, that will have been a pretty tiny explosion!!!

@TooTrusting I hope you get your stuff back. Yes, it's just stuff, but it's your stuff. I am sorry that so many idiots have hijacked your thread. I don't know what is the point in getting worked up about the planet if you don't like people very much!! Hope your feet recover soon. Have you managed to get anything to moisturise/soothe them?

Oh - and re AMA - perhaps there should be an R on the end of that, for relevant?!

There won’t be a world left to holiday in if we carry on. Climate change doesn’t care about tourism

PrincessofWellies · 24/07/2023 15:14

@Beeonmyeyelash if posters wish to comment on the environmental impact of climate change on a post about the impact of wildfires in Rhodes on a poster, many on here can see the irony of other posters trying to shut them down. It isn't trolling, it's expressing concerns that posters do not understand that its our choices which have led us to where we are in terms of climate change. It isn't hijacking a thread, it's pointing out our choices are wrecking the places to which we are travelling.

Tourism of the type to Rhodes IS negatively impacting our ecology and their island.

As previous posters have said, Op and her family has come through a difficult few days. But the two, expressing concerns for our choices, and the impact on the environment, and concern for the people caught up in the Rhodes fires are not mutually exclusive. And the accusation that those expressing such concerns about the environmental impact is trolling is akin to saying someone's a bunny boiler. It's designed to shut people down.

Drenchend · 24/07/2023 15:25

No we totally get it but this isn't a climate site forum it's a site that was and I'd designed to support people esp mums.
Op is in a traumatic situation that's speficic and berating her about flying isn't supportive or relevant.

Drenchend · 24/07/2023 15:26

Also this isn't a general thread about wildfires at all.
There are other general ones, this is someone who is stuck.

It’s probably not supportive but it’s entirely relevant. And to be fair she posted AMA not asking for help. It’s one of those issues that needs highlighting again and again, because the message just doesn’t seem to be sinking in, and it cannot wait.

I haven't accused anyone of trolling and I'm not trying to shut anyone down. I'm saying there's a time and a place for everything. When it comes to climate change discussion, this thread isn't it. You absolutely are derailing it. Bore off.

If this thread doesnt warrant a mention of climate change then what does?! OP is literally stuck on a burning island (or was, I haven’t read it all). Thank god she is safe but it absolutely needs to be reiterated as to why this has happened and the fact we ALL have caused it.

Swansandcustard · 24/07/2023 15:45

Can’t imagine how awful and scary it is OP. We were forced to stay outside for a night after an earthquake on Kos a few years ago, your situation sounds horrific.

We're not berating Op. It's not directed specifically at her but about the situation we're all in and have all made. All of us. We all need to make better choices, me included. I'm horrified, in retrospect with some of my past choices and I'm trying to do better. I won't be around much longer but some of you guys will be.

The figures for waste per person per year in India is 1/2 a kilogram. In the UK it's 550kg.

Maddy70 · 24/07/2023 14:52

It's all been contained now. Flights are running normally. Most hotels are operating again normally this was from tui today

The fire is very much worse today apparently. It's all around the hotel where we were and yards from the local petrol station. It's very windy again today.
The hotel lobby where hundreds were camped out is very much quieter than this morning. I think there have been a fair few flights out today.

OP posts:
H202020 · 24/07/2023 16:14

Had a TUI message to say they will work out plans to reunite folks with luggage, will be some mamouth task but roads down there are still closed so you cannot go yourself, we return Wed have this delusion they will say it's safe come and pick it up before you leave me thinks it will all happen next week or something, how they do it etc will be another story.

Did you pack yours? I was in a panic so just left if all. Wish to god I'd spent 10 minutes chucking it into a case. Are you flying to Bristol?
I'm hoping we'll get everything back but have written off the bag left on the road. I once travelled to the far east of Russia with 21 pieces of luggage including car seats and travel cots. Every piece went missing. Most of it was not labelled with our details. We got all of it back. 2 of 3 pieces would turn up every day. So I'm hoping I'll be that lucky again.
This message is somewhat self centred and I realise it trivialises the grave situation out here. Nevertheless I am still allowed to hope I'll see it again.

OP posts:
H202020 · 24/07/2023 16:30

We did not pack, big mistake, even to throw everything in and lock up and be ready, thing is you could say we paniced but you honestly could have took a shower packed up one suit case with essentials... In the moment you don't think..

I just had small back pack with water and passports, I had no clue if any transport would even have luggage hold.

Most of the clothes were in the suit cases, just the way I travel never like to stick clothes all over the place, but the bags have name tags including the tags from the airport I believe that's traceable back to your booking and flight, those little stickers they used to put on your passport they don't anymore they just scan the bar code.

Gothambutnotahamster · 24/07/2023 17:20

I hope you get your stuff back Op - appreciate it's 'just stuff' but it would be nice if it could be returned so I'll keep my fingers crossed! Safe home!

Toesgotravelling · 24/07/2023 18:11

Just seen your post and was going to tell you about the group- I'm the admin! I see though the power of MN has already found you. Latest update on the village- it's fine and people are back, nearer the hotel one taverna was destroyed. The hotel and staff are safe, it remains closed so no chance of getting luggage any time soon. You will have had the message from TUI about that. Hope you're managing ok

StefanosHill · 24/07/2023 18:33

News just now sounded bad.

People pushing, screaming at each other etc to get on coaches. No food or water where the guy was anyway

Don't worry - you are not trivialising anything! Of course you would like your things back. Even the preachers would, although they won't admit it.

Most of us are following your thread to hear your updates, and the hijacking of it by the self-appointed, self-righteous, lecturing brigade is intensely irritating!

Any idea when you might get home? How are you occupying yourselves during the time you wait? Good that the hotel and everyone who was in it is safe.

No don't keep up the messaging - if posters don't like it then ignore. MN will police the thread if necessary.
