Stuck in Rhodes

I was just east of Gennadi, 5 minutes away, at Atlantica Dreams resort (Tui). All day yesterday there was a steady stream of evacuated guests from other hotels arriving.
The fire seemed to die down at around 3pm. But by 7 it was raging again.
We were told one of us needed to stay up all night to listen gif the evacuation siren.
There were hundreds of evacuees there by then.
Just before 10pm we were evacuated. We walked to the road where there was a coach and some cattle trucks. It was chaos and hard not to be separated from my DCs (23, 19, 17 & 17). We had no idea where we were going. I had to calm and keep company 2 distraught children (circa 14 and 8) who had got separated from their parents. I lost a shoe and one DC their phone. We had to jettison the one small cabin size suitcase we had brought our essentials in.
Our truck broke down and we walked about a mile, again not knowing where we were going, and were eventually directed onto Gennadi beach. There were around 2000 people there all crammed together. Small boats, capacity around 10, went back and forth between ferry boats and the shore. There was no Dunkirk spirit. People were tired, upset and frightened. Some had not slept for 2 nights.

It took 4 hours until we finally managed to get on one at around 2. It was bedlam with everyone shoving and barging. I was separated from the DCs several times. Nobody knew where we were going.

We were on the ferry around 4 hours before arriving in Rhodes Town at c6.30am. We sailed through ash clouds and people had towels tied round their faces. People were taken off in different buses. We ended up in a school with 150 others. But there was nothing there for us, no beds, mats, washing facilities or food and it was boiling hot.
There was no list so the authorities have no idea who has gone where. It is a total lie for Tui to say they have re accommodated everyone. They have not. They have no idea where I am and until their phone lines open I cannot contact them either. The only info we have been given is an FCO number for advice on travel and consular assistance (which we don't need).
Luckily I have 24 hour insurance access and when I'd re charged my phone was able to establish I am covered (was worried it would be an "act of God"). I have booked a hotel for 1 night, after a long search. I've just arrived - it's chaos with everyone sleeping on the floor.
Just before we left the school a band of volunteers arrived laden with food and one of them thinks our hotel may have been burned down and we are unlikely to get back to try to retrieve our stuff. She says Gennadi is mostly gone.

We leave on Wednesday. We can't check in here til 2 and need to go and buy clothes and essentials. All we have is what we are standing in.

I don't feel so inclined.

Ok, since you want to chat in this thread, how about sharing the trips abroad you've taken in the last 3 years? I'm sure everyone will be very interested in your teeny tiny carbon footprint?

Owl55 · 24/07/2023 19:26

This is a terrible natural disaster but I think the holiday companies and staff are affected too and it must be be very difficult to access help for everyone when normal systems are not in place or even burnt . Reading your scary account of the fires brings it home that refugees must feel like this every time 🥲

Thinking of you @TooTrusting I hope you and your family are ok and get home soon

Just seen your post and was going to tell you about the group- I'm the admin! I see though the power of MN has already found you. Latest update on the village- it's fine and people are back, nearer the hotel one taverna was destroyed. The hotel and staff are safe, it remains closed so no chance of getting luggage any time soon. You will have had the message from TUI about that. Hope you're managing ok

No message from Tui, what did it say?

@TooTrusting I hope you're all doing OK?
I lived in Whaley Bridge when the dam breached and I was given 10 minutes to collect pets, essentials etc all whilst listening out for a siren and being prepared to run up the nearest hill if I heard it. I couldn't get to my dc at first as all the roads had been shut and the police had marched them to safety from holiday club but no one knew where they were. I ran around like a headless chicken before coming to my senses! You sound much calmer and in control than I was 💐. I hope you manage to get your flight home OK and manage to have some good memories of your holiday before this terrible event.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 24/07/2023 20:37

Thank you for sharing. I hope you get home safely and as stress free as possible. You might need some counselling or support when you get back, it’s a traumatic situation. Please ignore all the nonsense comments about ‘at lest you don’t live there’ or ‘you should have known not to go’. You’ve done nothing wrong and thank you for looking after the kids who got separated.

Winnipeg23 · 24/07/2023 20:56

What a horrendous ordeal. I'm so sorry you and your family have had to go through this. Hope you get out of there fast. Sending love.

H202020 · 24/07/2023 20:59

What don't kill you makes you stronger folks, learn from this and be stronger, be positive, sorry my 2p worth, sh1t happens right.

And reading so many stories and reports here have been so many unsung heroes words will not do justice.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 24/07/2023 21:09

And the people of Rhodes have been great I heard on the news. Maybe Rishi Sunak should publicly thank them for their help.

TooTrusting · 23/07/2023 08:53

So disappointed. This is the first time I've been able to afford to take them away for 8 years.

You’ve just lost some clothes and a phone and had your holiday cut short, spare a thought for the people that have lost their homes, livelihoods, potentially family members and pets. Some people have lost EVERYTHING.

User5653218 · 24/07/2023 21:24

My question is-

What would be your top tips for this sort of situation in future? I honestly don't mean that to sound flippant, I feel like we're all going to need to be a bit more organised for unpredictable changes of plan in the coming years

I'd be flapping around looking for 5 passports and clean pairs of pants and water bottles and contact lenses and who knows what else. I've never given a minute's thought to how we might get into our car without keys if it was parked at the airport but at least we've got spare house keys with a neighbour who feeds the cat. I've never photocopied a passport.

Maybe we should have some sort of grab bag in the hotel room with essentials. Dh would laugh his head off at me but this just shows how quickly things can change.

And I really hope you get home safely and have somewhere safe to sleep until then. And maybe get your belongings back. That would bug me too, that I couldn't go back and get them.

@Lefteyetwitch why do you think chinas emissions are so high? Because we all buy all our stuff from there...

This 💯. This drone about China and we can't make any difference. And big business needs to stop not us. Is just another way to kick the can down the road and allow yourself to.think it's someone else's problem.

blacknredsweeties · 24/07/2023 21:34

Yesterday they offered to get you a flight home. You said you would wait 4 more days. They then text you today regarding a flight. You missed the text because you gave the one charger to one of your kids. This seems madness to me.

Ahh, another one dimensional poster who thinks humans can only have one emotion.

Seriously @lynfordthecrab do you think after 900 odd posts you would be the first to post this little gem. That your virtue signaling would make you better than the op. Honestly you disgust me, getting your kicks from racing to the bottom .

I think this is really important. Being a solo travelling parent (not a solo parent at home) we have a WA group with copies of passport, insurance, E111 cards (I can't remember the new name) hotel bookings, car bookings, flight times, emergency numbers etc which all that see old enough and travelling have and my DH and parents have access too. I also always take a credit card that I've let know I'm abroad (was once trapped in Paris during a riot where my barclaycard refused to work as they thought it was fraudulent- pre mobiles - v stressful)

We always store things in the safe but this has made me think about the other things I would want to have access to (namely medication, booster packs and the lo's bear, )

Are you incapable of feeling more than one emotion? Like disappointment the OP was feeling, as well as feeling incredibly sorry for the Greek people affected?

Most of us are emotionally adjusted enough that we can understand the OPs disappointment AND her sadness for the locals affected.

It's all been contained now. Flights are running normally. Most hotels are operating again normally this was from tui today

That's nothing like that TUI said today. They've cancelled all flights this week other than repatriation flights.

Lethalinformation · 24/07/2023 22:14

It just looks horrific , devastating for so many involved and yes that includes tourists who keep local economies afloat and work hard for their holidays. I'm a bit of an eco bore but can see both sides to this story

Inastatus · 24/07/2023 22:17

@lynfordthecrab - just bloody do one! Have you RTFT?!!

Tetchypants · 24/07/2023 22:27

It’s made me think about having easy access to essentials (passports, bank cards, valuables, phones, chargers etc) if there was any possibility of sudden evacuation.

Poor Greece, this is the last thing they need in peak season, a lot of people will be put off booking there next year.

Just to be more sensible about what I packed I think. I only had a handbag. It would have been better if my hand luggage had been a rucksack. And then I wouldn't have tried to take the small trolley case I had to ditch. Also I should have chucked everything I was leaving into the cases rather than leaving everything in situ.

I missed the text firstly because that was the first sleep I had in 36 hours. Secondly it came at 3am.
Thirdly I ceded the charger not realising I was low on charge. Because I was, you know, tired.
Human error caused by exhaustion rather than madness I think.
I didn't say I'd wait 4 days for a flight. I was given the option of retraining 1 or 2 days early but not to the airport near my home or where my car is parked. Unlike others I have a room. So I thought it was best to go on my original flight.

I suppose we don't expect to need them to hand when going to the pool for a swim, but maybe now we will think a bit more about it.

I have a medical condition that often sees me carted off to hospital for emergency treatment. Not life threatening but serious enough. I go nowhere without my "grab bag" especially when abroad. Spare chargers, undies, Pjs, essential toiletries, ear plugs, eye mask, and those cheap spa slippers. Fits in a very small bag and can be thrown in the car after me!
