Is a book influencer a thing? I’d love to influence people to buy Shakespeare, Henry James and rather dated lady novelists.

Mrseven · 20/02/2023 16:16

Do you all think influencers are vain and attention-seeking?

And are the small business owners trying to get followers on SM also influencers? Aren't they on there because they need to find customers?

Would be interested in your comments on this

@Mumsanetta so you've never had a teen with a much loved pet who sees all the crap of the day being flogged by "influencers"?

I'm not just talking about beauty influencers.

I don’t have a teen but I do have friends with horse mad teens who spend more time on their horses than they do glued to Instagram. They have also been taught not to believe everything they see on Instagram.

AzureOrchid · 20/02/2023 16:19

Ops posts have disappeared on my end too
Does that mean she’s deleted her account or something?
Weird that the thread title is still there though.

Quite. My dd reads a lot of them and a) we have discussed reality v insta many times and b) she's a canny old bird for 16

What an absolute bunch of unpleasant cunts a lot of you are. I'm happy to see that as you all clearly have fantastically important jobs that you're so desperately indispensable to that you're here posting nasty jibes on MN at 3 in the afternoon...

We are being sold to all the time. We are being lied to all the time in the name of advertising, whether it's a Chanel perfume advert or someone flogging dog food on TikTok. You can choose not to engage with SM if it enrages you that much. Or like most people, you see a product that looks interesting and you do some research into the company before deciding whether or not it aligns with your ethics/ whether or not you want to buy it or not. Much like any other product you see advertised.

I have no problem with people making their living on SM if that works for them. Maybe influencers are a dying breed or maybe they will mutate into something else that needs that particular skill set.

I'm sorry you were hounded off your own thread OP.

Seems part of the reasons we cannot have intriguing threads due to people's behaviours, what happened to good manners and being polite

Being an influencer is the same as being involved in an MLM to me. Distasteful.

How so?

Interested for you to explain how one is 'the same' as the other.

HangingOver · 20/02/2023 16:28

I used to broker deals for Instagram content, it's like printing money! But the weren't full time influencers they were people who were already known for doing something else IYSWIM

LadyOfTheCanyon · 20/02/2023 16:28

Quite. I see none of the Billy Big Bollocks shooting their mouths off early doors on the thread have come back to justify while they've been quite so vile.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 20/02/2023 16:28

Sorry, that was to @Hawkins003

Hawkins003 · 20/02/2023 16:29

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 15:58

I don't know why I have such a visceral reaction to it. Well. I do. It's because my now adult daughters totally bought into it a couple of years ago and it was aimed at young teen girls and a totally fake unachievable lifestyle.

It's preying on people in the same way as an MLM in my view. It's showing someone's life and the people being "influenced" think they're seeing the actual life of some person.

It really bothers me.

But we get adverts all the time in various mediums, how is it the op or any companies fault, if x person believes the adverts ? Sury they would be better helped with a course in understanding advertising ect so they don't get misled ?

Roterosen · 20/02/2023 16:29

You mean sales person not influencer. You don’t influence anyone in any meaningful way and the sooner this crap stops and people like you get a real job instead of faking life through pictures the happier we’ll all be.

Yes!

Dreamstate · 20/02/2023 16:34

For me, I found it interesting following people on instagram, they are sharing their content because it was personal to them and that was fine. But when it comes paid for or sponsored by it loses the 'personal' element. Its no longer that person just sharing because they wanted to.

Its why I subscribe to netflix without ads. Sometimes you just don't want everything to be about a product being advertised or sold to you. So in that same respect when people I follow go down that route, okay good for them they are making money but it puts me off because their content is now not really the reason why they started in the first place

Yes!

If your not actually selling something then your not in sales, your marketing / influencing

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 20/02/2023 16:36

I know a successful influencer (sorry salesperson).

For ages she wouldn’t credit anyone in her posts until people called her out on it.

She’s now sidelined into courses on how to be like her etc.

She really annoys the shit out of me for a few reasons, one which I can’t mention here but involves her DH’s behaviour.

I’m pleased the trend is dying to be honest.

ThePreacherLikesTheCold · 20/02/2023 16:37

Bloody hell. I think some of the posters would be better suited to Tattle.Life.

JuneOsborne · 20/02/2023 16:40

Oh, dear.

I was interested in this, with proper questions like did you have to learn video editing pdq, or did you already know how to do that? How do you think of the content? Do you feel a bit stuck now and can't reclaim your online presence or do you have personal accounts and still enjoy sm? Etc.

But some people were weirdly horrible. What's that about? You don't like influencers, ok, we get it. But they're out there, doing it whether you like it or not. And clearly making money, entertaining their followers, so plenty of people are fine with it... I don't get it.

I can’t see that many PP’s have been that vile or nasty really.

It’s OP who’s flounced off early, which is a shame as I’d have liked to have found out more about what she did.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think there’s any shame in influencing etc and if you’re good at it, then all power to you, but I do think it’s a bit lacking in morals if you’re the type of influencer who lies about how they make money as this can influence (ha!) impressionable younger people, who see it as an easy future career.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 20/02/2023 16:43

ThePreacherLikesTheCold · 20/02/2023 16:37

Bloody hell. I think some of the posters would be better suited to Tattle.Life.

If you read some of Tattle life honestly a lot of posters there are normal women and men who are fed up with the fawning/bullshit etc that some (not all!) of MN aspire to and do.

And no, I’m not a member of Tattle life!

BippityBopper · 20/02/2023 16:43

Nausrous · 20/02/2023 14:48

I work in digital marketing (more data analytics e.g Google etc) and we know that "influencers" are becoming a thing of the past.

Do you have a backup plan for when your influencing goes down the shitter?

(no doubt OP will tell us she's doing really well and will continue to do so for years. They all say that.... until they "quit" and disappear)

Are you interested in an answer or do you just want to be bitchy? Your last paragraph would suggest the latter?

BookTok is a TikTok movement to recommend books.

Totally agree. Very weird.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 20/02/2023 16:44

Do you pick your ‘friends’ based on their reach?

explanation: a male friend of mine with 500k Insta followers due to his work (no selfies on his account at all) is romantically pursued by multiple young women with 5-10k followings. He suspects they only want to date him for access to his follower count…

cushionhat · 20/02/2023 16:44

I imagine what most of us want to know is much money you make from this OP?

I don't really get the criticism - surely most people would like to make money doing something they enjoy, e.g. I know someone who does recipes on social media and makes money from it.

AnxietyLevelMax · 20/02/2023 16:47

can you truly share how much you make with that amount of followers?
