One example is streaming platforms including ads (proper, acted ads) in programmes, rather than making people subscribe. It's a much better way to generate income as more popular programmes can command big audiences and therefore a lot more revenue. There is also a growing realisation that personalisation (showing people ads tailored to their preferences) has limited value because people end up seeing the same thing over and over - the classic situation being when you buy shoes then see the shoes advertised everywhere - you're hardly going to buy them again straight away so that advertising spend is being wasted.

Traditionally advertising worked based on the content - good newspapers sold big on ads because people paid to the read the news and then got advertised at while they were doing it. Newer media is 'relearning' that lesson, very slowly and is drifting towards a more old fashioned media format where someone makes the decisions about what content to present (as opposed to the fairly random free for all of SM) and then includes advertising within that. It's a good business model that's worked for a long time, so it makes sense.

Tell me how you know nothing about contemporary advertising without...etc etc

Being an influencer is the same as being involved in an MLM to me. Distasteful.

It really isn't. MLM is a business model, designed to pull people (typically women) and get them to put themselves into debt buy-into the 'business' and they can only make a profit by aggressively pushing selling the products and 'recruiting' other (cult) members.

Influencing is advertising. No different to what you see on TV, especially when endorsed by celebrities. You really think George Clooney has a nespresso machine?

Sadlifter · 20/02/2023 15:50

I don't think I've read a more aggressively ignorant thread on mumsnet for a long time and that's saying something.

Is influencer the new name for sales person?

Yes 😂

What a bizarrely pointless post.

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 15:52

I said "to me". As in. I view it the same. As an MLM.

Not that it was to everyone. But that's how it feels to me. And it gives me the creeps in a way I can't explain.

I really really dislike it.

TheDailyCarbunkle · 20/02/2023 15:53

AlwaysGinPlease · 20/02/2023 15:51

Yes 😂

Not really a sales person - more someone who manages to deliver the entire package of an advertising agency - setting up the deal, design the creative and content, shooting, acting, editing, distribution - often with just one person or a very very small team.

NextPrimeMinister · 20/02/2023 15:54

Soooooo many horrible, horrible responses to this OP.

Such vitriol against someone with either a lucrative side hustle or career.

Who gives a shit about her plan B or pension.

Am embarrassed for you all.

What do you think is the similarity?

One is in a dishonest pyramid scam (that's totally outdated now anyway) and the other is a paid product endorser, to people who have opted to see the content.

I get it might not be your thing, but why such a visceral reaction? Can't you see the difference?

Maybe she doesn't realise that influencers now make it very clear if something is an #ad or sponsored #spon

Like my 80 year old dad who doesn't really understand social media

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 15:58

I don't know why I have such a visceral reaction to it. Well. I do. It's because my now adult daughters totally bought into it a couple of years ago and it was aimed at young teen girls and a totally fake unachievable lifestyle.

It's preying on people in the same way as an MLM in my view. It's showing someone's life and the people being "influenced" think they're seeing the actual life of some person.

It really bothers me.

What an absolute bunch of unpleasant cunts a lot of you are. I'm happy to see that as you all clearly have fantastically important jobs that you're so desperately indispensable to that you're here posting nasty jibes on MN at 3 in the afternoon...

We are being sold to all the time. We are being lied to all the time in the name of advertising, whether it's a Chanel perfume advert or someone flogging dog food on TikTok. You can choose not to engage with SM if it enrages you that much. Or like most people, you see a product that looks interesting and you do some research into the company before deciding whether or not it aligns with your ethics/ whether or not you want to buy it or not. Much like any other product you see advertised.

I have no problem with people making their living on SM if that works for them. Maybe influencers are a dying breed or maybe they will mutate into something else that needs that particular skill set.

I'm sorry you were hounded off your own thread OP.

This. How nasty some of you are. I do hope you come back @PercyPigfangirl as I had lots of questions of you!

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 15:59

And yes I know there's #ad.

But there didn't used to be.

And plenty of influencers still get caught out not putting #ad

Jealousy?Grin

I'm very content with my own education, career and living abroad!

Yep, I definitely hit a nerve.

@radiatorflush as do plenty of companies. Being pulled up by advertising standards is not limited to influencers yet I don’t see people like you going after the likes of L’Oreal or Huel with the pitchforks.

Teens are impressionable. It's all just advertising and they'll have to learn it's not real, the same way we learned about airbrushing, makeup and lighting.

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 16:04

L'Oreal or Huel aren't posting an AMA here.

And I do "go after" companies that are misleading if I feel strongly about it - thinking of one on Facebook that I comment on every time.

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 16:04

@ReneBumsWombats I know that.

It just really bothers me.

currantbee · 20/02/2023 16:08

I'm surprised anyone can be an influencer whilst being so sensitive to comments. Some of the comments I've seen on Instagram are far worse than I've ever seen on mumsnet.

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 16:04

I think you need to take greater responsibility for educating your teens and step back from hounding innocent people on MN. The OP said she works with animals, hardly the same as a beauty influencer.

ShimmeringShirts · 20/02/2023 16:09

You mean sales person not influencer. You don’t influence anyone in any meaningful way and the sooner this crap stops and people like you get a real job instead of faking life through pictures the happier we’ll all be.

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 16:10

@Mumsanetta so you've never had a teen with a much loved pet who sees all the crap of the day being flogged by "influencers"?

I'm not just talking about beauty influencers.

They now say #ad or #sponsored

Dd watches a lot of the pony ones and although the sponsored placements are irritating it's made very clear that they are ads.

Do salespeople not influence anyone?
