I think the nastiness is coming from the same place as the eternal MN revulsion for "attention seeking". Doing anything that requires people to pay any attention to you, including creating visual content for people who have subscribed to see it, must mean that you are vapid, stupid and definitely not as happy and successful as the poster attacking you.

It's particularly virulent on MN, but tbh it's kind of a British thing too.

TellMeAboutItAnotherTime · 20/02/2023 16:50

Just the op missing for me?? MNHQ?

Sadlifter · 20/02/2023 16:52

BippityBopper · 20/02/2023 16:43

Are you interested in an answer or do you just want to be bitchy? Your last paragraph would suggest the latter?

A thing of the past 😅😅😅 heard of tiktok??

Yeah course you work in data analytics

Wow, legit thought I'd do this post as before I did this job I had no idea how it all worked and genuinely thought people may be interested or want to ask questions. Getting a lot aggressive judgement and abuse..
I don't take my clothes off. I'm not a pushy sales person. I'm very passionate about my field of expertise and have shared that on socials and it's grown unexpectedly. It's actually really challenged my self-confidence and has been a really empowering journey which has given me financial independence and buisness skills. For all the woman on these boards that bang on about female empowerment, not judging others, letting any woman be who she wants to be .. you equally have a way of tearing other women down.
So I'm outta here...

A lot of jealousy it seems, I don’t blame you for going. I have no time for Instagram or influencers personally but clearly many people do and want to spend their money this way. In the same way I don’t understand the appeal of football- but if players earn that wage by those paying to see them- good for them. Good for you on doing something you enjoy and it bringing you some money in. It’s not harming anyone else.

dawngreen · 20/02/2023 16:53

Don't you feel grubby taking money for doing fuck all? And knowing that you're getting people to spend money they don't need to spend? Its advertising people do have the ability to say no if they think its crap or they need their cash they also have the ability to switch off the pc @radiatorflush

AnnieMore · 20/02/2023 16:58

My niece is an influencer. She doesn’t promote one specific thing, just health and wellness generally. The amount of freebies she gets sent is unbelievable.

It’s a strange life, but she makes a mint and travels all over the world.

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 17:00

LadyOfTheCanyon · 20/02/2023 16:28

Quite. I see none of the Billy Big Bollocks shooting their mouths off early doors on the thread have come back to justify while they've been quite so vile.

I came back. I explained.

TellMeAboutItAnotherTime · 20/02/2023 17:10

The op post has actually gone now. Just a few subsequent replies are left. The thread makes no sense without an op surely?

Hawkins003 · 20/02/2023 17:11

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 17:00

I came back. I explained.

But why blame the influencer / marketing when it's your dd that needed better understanding of advertising ect ?

Mariposa26 · 20/02/2023 17:13

Sadlifter · 20/02/2023 15:50

I don't think I've read a more aggressively ignorant thread on mumsnet for a long time and that's saying something.

Totally agree. It’s embarrassing to see. This is a new form of advertising as things constantly evolve (including careers). As someone else pointed out, we are all being sold to constantly. Would you ban celebrities advertising shampoo and make up on TV as well? What a shame people are so unkind to someone doing something a bit different.

So less of an “Ask Me Anything” and more of a “If You Ask Me Anything I Don’t Like I’ll Flounce”?

Well to be honest if your social media content is essentially 'look at me I am pretty' then don't be surprised if you are viewed as a bit shallow and vapid.

I am very much into rowing, I follow a number of coaches and athletes on Instagram. Between them they offer plenty of advice on the sport, be it physical training, technical or psychological tips and exercises. They often post 'behind the scenes' content at major events (world, euro, olympic champs etc). Some provide weekly dairies on their training and race prep, getting over injuries, nutrition, keeping motivation etc. There is some brilliant stuff being posted by inspiring people who are genuine experts in their field. Because I follow this sport the algorithms stink up my feed with loads of 'look at me' influencers who are just posing in skimpy training gear in a very sexualised manner near a rowing boat. Half the time I don't think they even know how to row, just endless photos and video shorts with the usual life affirming trite messaging bollocks while they bumble round in full make up not doing very much while smiling gormlessly into the camera. They often have several thousand followers and the comments under their posts are of the 'hot','❤', 🔥' variety. I can't tell if they are stupid or not but they certainly come across as vapid and very much 'attention seeking' for the sake of it. I am not revulsed by such people, just incredibly bored as they are ten a penny with nothing unique to offer except for being pretty.

Jamieleecurtain · 20/02/2023 17:21

Wow. Some horrible responses here. OP hasn’t said this is her career- just that she makes money out of it.. and even if it is what’s the problem? Would a SAHM get the same amount of venom? A lot of the same issues seem to apply.

Influencers clearly have a place in society (like it or not!) and an AMA like this is great for helping us understand it a little better.

TheDogthatDug · 20/02/2023 17:21

Have you ever had a proper job?

Have you ever had a proper job?

A) what's a ' proper job'?
B) What if she hasn't? What if this is the only thing she does and makes a living from it?

I've checked three rowing insta accounts and all have sponsored content somewhere.

WelshNerd · 20/02/2023 17:24

I doN't think the OP has been edited. The title speaks for itself and you can't have a blank OP so the ellipsis was added.

CrotchetyQuaver · 20/02/2023 17:26

Typically how much to companies have to pay to use the services of an influencer?

B0g · 20/02/2023 17:26

‘What an absolute bunch of unpleasant cunts a lot of you are.’

Cute! Have you considered influencing people yourself @LadyOfTheCanyon ? 😄

Why do you think her Insta is all about being pretty? She said it was about animal related products. What's this lengthy rant about attractive people on social media got to do with anything other than your own hang ups?

LadyOfTheCanyon · 20/02/2023 17:29

The OP said she did something that was animal/pet related. I very much doubt that she is rubbing up against Dobermanns in her scunts while licking a dog chew lasciviously, and even if she was, good luck to her.

People immediately jump to the idea that influencer= scantily dressed vacuous woman. I have a friend who has a business in animal behaviour training. As her business has got bigger and more successful she has been approached to work with companies and promote their products within her business. She chooses which ones she wants to partner with very carefully. She could say no to all of them, of course, but the breakdown is the money is good and gets her extra reach to continue promoting her own business. It can be a very happy symbiotic relationship.

Some influencers just shill the first thing that comes through their doors because they need constant content. It's very easy to avoid those kind of acccounts once you've seen a few of them.

It's not for the want of trying.

Reinventinganna · 20/02/2023 17:34

@PercyPigfangirl my question was going to be aboit whether you get any abuse online but I would imagine nothing as bad as the way that you have been treated here sadly. I’m sorry that people have been so rude.

B0g · 20/02/2023 17:34

If someone would give me money for putting a photo I took of something on IG I’d take it. I’d bet every person on this thread that they would, too. ‘Hello, we’ll give you £20 if you take a photo of a mug of tea with our logo in the background’ -as if anyone would say no 😄

Everycloud4 · 20/02/2023 17:39

@PercyPigfangirl Which animal/s?
Did you start posting photos of your pet and get invited to try out different products?
I know someone that did this and is now an ambassador for a particular animal company in Australia. Their posts are lovely and I enjoy seeing them.
Do you do hauls of different products, and if so, do you keep them all?

Interesting to have an animal social media influencer answer questuons 🙂
