From this thread I think we can add influencers to MN’s black list in addition to:

OW
Thin people
Rich people

Wow, legit thought I'd do this post as before I did this job I had no idea how it all worked and genuinely thought people may be interested or want to ask questions. Getting a lot aggressive judgement and abuse..
I don't take my clothes off. I'm not a pushy sales person. I'm very passionate about my field of expertise and have shared that on socials and it's grown unexpectedly. It's actually really challenged my self-confidence and has been a really empowering journey which has given me financial independence and buisness skills. For all the woman on these boards that bang on about female empowerment, not judging others, letting any woman be who she wants to be .. you equally have a way of tearing other women down.
So I'm outta here...

well done you on your success.

Dog owners

Absolutely anyone who requires their existence to be acknowledged at some point, aka "attention seekers". Who are always women, interestingly.

I really would like to know where that one comes from because it's a bloody obsession.

Mind boggling that people are getting so upset about people trying to earn a living in product marketing/advertising.
Some of them succeed and earn money, lots of them fail. But you're under no obligation to follow ANY of them so you can avoid the adverts even easier than you can avoid TV and print ads.
Why get so worked up??

Roterosen · 20/02/2023 19:27

Given the huge number of 'fake' followers, why are companies still willing to pay?

Generally, due to the belief that marketing influences behavior, eg the bell weather curve

Shahira78 · 20/02/2023 14:57

The seething jealousy from some of you is palpable

This. „Don’t you feel bad for getting paid for doing nothing?“ If she did nothing, no brands would be interested in working with her.
It‘s not like it’s the early days of social media - I can imagine that nowadays you need to put quite a bit of effort into it if you want to stand out and attract clients.
To reach a high following and maintain a high level of engagement from those followers one needs to be constantly producing interesting content and stay on top of the algorithms.
I follow several influencers on Instagram - I wouldn’t want their job - and yes, I think it is a job when done properly.
Do people really believe someone posts 10-20 pretty selfies and gets immediately overwhelmed with lucrative offers?

dawngreen · 20/02/2023 19:44

People have the option to leave the page or press the off button on the pc. Why so jealous? for crying out loud. We all have bills to pay.

Sarah2891 · 20/02/2023 19:54

The people that said their rude comments were not because they're jealous make me laugh. If you were happy with your life you wouldn't feel the need to be such a rude arsehole to someone for no reason.

How much do you earn from it and do you pay tax?

I must say, 163k followers doesn't sound like a lot for a proper 'influencer'. My 15 year old cousin has half of that and she only posts random selfies with parts of them scribbled out.

You'd be surprised. I know an 'influencer' who has earning a high 5 figure salary via 'influencing' while around that number of followers. There are many revenue streams available once you have a following of any size.

Xenia · 20/02/2023 20:01

It is a pity the poster went which just suggests influences are weak, prone to crying and don't have a tough skin. I have nothing against them at all. The HMRC investigation and my link to the FT article about it is interesting simply because some of them don't pay the tax they should but of course others do.

There are lots of interesting legal issues relating to them particularly was regards advertising law (at least for lawyers like I am...)

Oh yes, you can absolutely tell you have nothing against influencers at all 🤔

Op came on to do an AMA for people interested and maybe to help others and just got a bunch of nasty responses (yours included) for no reason whatsoever.

Just the usual on MN, people not understanding a topic so blindly insult it rather than try and learn about it.

Janch13 · 20/02/2023 20:16

@Sadlifter here to defend all influencers!! 👏🏼 👏🏼

DelphiniumBlue123 · 20/02/2023 20:22

MamaCanYouBuyMeABanana · 20/02/2023 15:00

Good for you.

You gained followers on SM, and have found a way to monetise off it with little effort. I would 100% do the same if I had SM.

Influencing is just advertising, nobody gets snobby about people who work in advertising.

Exactly! All the men who work in advertising and IT. Who are they "helping" exactly?!

Some posters here are really rude and unkind!

Mariposa26 · 20/02/2023 20:41

Roterosen · 20/02/2023 19:27

Given the huge number of 'fake' followers, why are companies still willing to pay?

There are tools available for brands to easily establish fake followers. Fake followers also do not engage with content and an influencer will be required to produce their insights (how many views etc a post has got). So fake followers really aren’t too much of an issue as those with them can quickly be weeded out by marketing/PR teams who know their stuff.

purpledalmation · 20/02/2023 20:54

I think 'influencer' and instagram are terms of scorn and hatred by many people as symbols of all that is wrong with social media.

However Op is simply using the platform to sell and discuss items of interest to her interests

Are you going to go after every advertising agency and every actor in a commercial?

Is advertising a new concept to you? And does it offend you so much when it's not people at home with computers?

I didn‘t see the original comment, but it seems like advertising is a new concept to quite a few people on this thread…

JustAskingMate · 20/02/2023 21:26

sorry about the responses OP.

I think when people see the word ‘influencer’ they think of very attractive young women in a polished environment with lots of money. For some reason that really angers some people.
