I am a long time user lured back here after being disillusioned by a particularly horrible thread.
Anyway, as I say, I’m from Wigan. If anyone is remotely interested, ask away.

I'm from Wigan too, do I know you? 😂
Do you remember The Tudor House pub in town? Russ left 😥
Are you as old as me - do you remember Petticoat Lane? Never been the same since.
I grew up in Hindley, do you know it?
Btw I live in Bolton now and there is a roller rink. Nevada on Manchester Rd.

The guy from wigan has shagged everyone aswell. I wonder if he's shagged anyone you know Grin

PotatoPie888 · 30/11/2021 18:52

Hello @Thehogfatherstolemycurry

I know Hindley. My dad is from there.

Did they rebuild Bolton Nevada ? The original definitely burned down in the 80’s

elp30 · 30/11/2021 18:52

@PotatoPie888

Help an American lady out please.

Husband is from Leigh and he speaks fondly of peas that he'd eat on days out in Wigan. Apparently they had vinegar.

What kind of peas are they and do you know where I could find a recipe to create them in our home in Texas?

Thanks.

Luckypoppy · 30/11/2021 18:53

Me too! Hello. 😂

PotatoPie888 · 30/11/2021 18:54

@elp They are black peas. Always served with vinegar. Absolutely delicious.

Tillymintpolo · 30/11/2021 18:55

Parched peas ! Or is that a Preston thing ??

PotatoPie888 · 30/11/2021 18:56

Some people call them parched peas, but we didn’t. Also heard them being called pigeon peas which explains why they were bought from the pet shop Grin

Tilly it did burn down, they ran it in a school after that for years and now it's in a building just out of town.

Thank you.
I'll look up a recipe now that I know what they're called.
Strangely, his penchant for these peas never came up in the five years we lived in Westhoughton where I could have tried them myself 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 30/11/2021 19:02

I know Hindley. My dad is from there. I'm quite middle aged maybe I know him. 😂

Jessesgirl13 · 30/11/2021 19:04

Did you ever go to Maximes Rock Night on a Friday?

PotatoPie888 · 30/11/2021 19:05

He is older than you. He lived in Argyle Street.

Why has no one mentioned Uncle Joes Mint Balls? Are you really from Wigan (eyes OP suspiciously)

I grew up in Wigan. My Grandad was a Rag and Bone man. I like pies. And rugby.

Fashionesta · 30/11/2021 19:13

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Baby Ford yet who actually wrote a song called Wigan! Was a fan back in the day. Did you know him? (Imagining from this thread that you knew everyone in Wigan).

Bichette · 30/11/2021 19:13

Ha ha, this is a trip down memory lane.
I grew up in Wigan in the late 70s/early 80s, went to the roller rink, the Bees Knees and Tiffany's disco. Anyone remember that? It was near the bus station iirc.
I am gutted that Wigan Casino closed down just before I was really old enough to go out clubbing as whenever I mention that I grew up in Wigan, people say "oh, what was Wigan casino like?" 😡

My school was opposite the factory. We used to get a whiff every day. Cleared the lungs out in winter!
JaneJeffer · 30/11/2021 19:20

I've got an empty tin I keep biros in. I think I bought them in an airport. Didn't know they're made in Wigan.

PieonaBarm · 30/11/2021 19:21

@Luckypoppy you went to the Deanery then.....

PotatoPie888 · 30/11/2021 19:23

I still love an Uncle Joes Mint Ball.

@PotatoPie888 @Thehogfatherstolemycurry my Mum taught in Hindley for 40 years. When we did the Friday big shop in Morrisons in Ince she could silence a naughty child with a look. She'd taught most of them and all the checkout ladies knew her 😂

Bichette · 30/11/2021 19:27

I went to Winstanley 6th form college.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 30/11/2021 19:28

Argyle St was not far from my school. Park High. There was a good chippy near it we used to go to at dinner time. 😊

Bettybantz · 30/11/2021 19:30

Parched peas are Preston Tillymint. Also home to the butter pie. Where do you stand on those OP?
