I've been here for years too, just planning a holiday for next year too

I feel your pain OP! I’m in a civil service admin position that hadn’t had anyone in the role for the last 3 years. I was definitely not needed, I can get my weeks work done in a day.
The problem is I’m in a huge office surrounded by other teams who I’m nothing to do with, so it’s not like I can sit on my phone all day or read a book as id be getting dirty looks from the other teams who all seem really busy!
So I just have to do everything super slowly which really is hard work.
My mental health is awful as is my self esteem as I feel like I’m not needed, I go home and feel too drained to even do anything!

notanotherfucker · 13/05/2019 13:38

@loststars....I am lucky in the respect that my desk isn't in view of any one else, so I can do what the heck I want really. I finished my work by 9.22am today.

notanotherfucker · 13/05/2019 13:39

but yeah you feel worn out when you get home, from doing nothing.

Oh god I had a temp job like that last year thankfully it only lasted 10 weeks.

Yes it was nice having a little bit of money but dear god the 6 hours I worked a day there felt like a lifetime.

Clutterbugsmum · 13/05/2019 13:44

Sorry posted too soon,

I knew it was only short term as I was just covering the office 'admin work' while the boss had surgery and recovery period.

I read 9 books and spent an average of 5 hours on my phone.

MiddleAgedChub · 13/05/2019 13:48

Have you thought about asking if you can work from home?

notanotherfucker · 13/05/2019 13:49

They won't let me work from home, I'm needed in the office apparently!

notanotherfucker · 13/05/2019 13:58

I can't thank you enough for this bullshit job thing, I have found my people.

I had a job like that for a bit, couldn't stand it!! Started at 9:30 finished by 10:15, and to make matters worse, the "big boss" who didn't work on site would always turn up/call 10 minutes after we were meant to have finished just to check who was still there....
I think I lasted around 2 months, during which time I found myself some things to do: I improved the filing system, wrote procedures for when I left (they had nothing in writing). I even created an Access database for them, even though I knew eff all about Access to start with!!
If you can't leave and can't create a few more things for you to do I would start studying or learning anything that will allow you to get a better job somewhere else. Having nothing to do but having to be physically at work is soul destroying!!

Ragwort · 13/05/2019 18:08

Lost that is a shocking situation for a civil servant, why can’t you speak to your superior & explain the situation? Or just ask someone in another team if you can help?

I just cannot understand how organisations allow people to have so little to do Confused

LostStars39 · 13/05/2019 23:16

@ragwort I’ve asked my line manager loads of times but as she works in a different location to me she doesn’t see how little I have to do. She’s given me extra bits and pieces to do but nothing that keeps me busy for long. Everyone just keeps telling me “oh it will pick up soon” and then it never does. The other team in the building are almost like a different sector so nothing to do with me. I have started an online course today vaguely relevant to my job so at least that’s something to do.

MiddleAgedChub · 13/05/2019 23:47

This sort of job is so interesting to me as I've the opposite type of job at present. My most boring jobs to date have been working in a very quiet shop alone and not a very busy data entry role but I still had enough to do.

What happens when you are sick and when planning for leave? Do you get replaced and do you leave notes?

TwittleBee · 14/05/2019 07:48

What's always surprised me at jobs like this is that the managing staff always speak so highly of me, despite me doing fuck all. Does anyone else find that? Leaves you feeling even more like a fraud!

Also, many time I've been told by colleagues that I need to slow down how quickly I do the work given to me as it makes the rest of team look bad and I'm not being a team player....

mrscatmad31 · 14/05/2019 07:59

I had a job like this last year, there was often two of us sat there doing nothing (well, the other one used to watch Jeremy Kyle!) i hated it and it made me ill, i now work in a call centre and i am constantly busy, even though it really isnt a great job im so much happier! Pays less too but i do more hours

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 08:31

When I'm on holiday or off people just think I'm efficient for tying up lose ends before I go....

The managing staff do speak very highly of me yes, one of them said I may be in line for a promotion. The truth is if I were promoted it would be the same role I do now, there is nothing to do in that role either. Its currently unfilled as someone left and there has been no extra work passed on.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 14/05/2019 08:35

Are you me? My workload has dwindled in the last few months. I've watched loads of TV and spend a lot of time on the internet. I'm starting an online processional qualification which should absorb a lot of time, I'm really looking forward to it but worried I don't know how to use my brain anymore.

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 08:37

I feel like my brain has shrunk, I just feel stupid now like I couldn't learn anything if I tried! It's horrible.

What type of course are you doing?

OP posts:
MsMarvellous · 14/05/2019 09:12

You should write a novel. About someone writing a novel while doing a job where there isn't enough work. Then the character and you can both become famous.

MintedLamb · 14/05/2019 09:16

Sounds like our jobs are similar. When I started here 9 years ago I was rushed off my feet. Now im lucky if I have about 2 hours a day of work to do and I'm only part time now. I play a LOT of candy crush.

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 11:17

Well it has been a busy morning, was flat out until 9.57!!!!

That's my work done now..... been faffing about for the last hour, now time to see what's on the box.

OP posts:
notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 11:26

What's everyone else with nothing to do doing?

OP posts:
WalkAwaySugarbear · 14/05/2019 13:00

Notanother I'm starting CIMA which will melt my brain I think.
I'm the same, super busy until about 10am then chill until an email comes in, work on that for 5 mins, make a brew.
On a plus point my candy crush level is over 3000.

moomoogalicious · 14/05/2019 13:07

I had a job like this in the civil service. Nothing to do for 9 months, my boss refused to let me use my initiative to do anything. Really messed with my mental health - it was 16 years ago and I still get panicky if I think I'm running out of work. Its amazing how many of these jobs are out there!

Hope today doesn't drag too much for you OP!
