Do we work at the same place walkway! It's been awful today, seeing how sunny it is and being stuck at my desk with nothing to do. As you say the odd email, I made a brew, re arranged my stationery. 😦

I’ve had a job exactly like this. The clock watching and literally counting down the minutes from the moment I arrived was terrible. Boss a tyrant and no internet other than for work, phones, or earphones allowed. Thank god im no longer there.

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 17:39

I had a friend who left for the same reason, we used to watch shows together and at least we could discuss them. I'm kind of my own department now, as I said 4 people have left as they had zero work for anyone......

I'm congratulated for holding the forte and doing the job of 4 people. 4 people doing nothing isn't hard to cover.

Nothing worse

I watched the entire Olympics because my work ran out before my end date

I felt like I was on a long haul flight and my eyes went funny

MintedLamb · 14/05/2019 18:13

Part of the reason that I haven't left is the pay. I'm paid probably 5k more than similar roles I've seen advertised and it's really flexible so if I want to change my working days then it's not an issue which is priceless while my children are still small.
I was actually quite busy today because I tried to update some software and it fucked my computer up completely so spent a long time on the phone with support trying to sort that!

TwittleBee · 14/05/2019 18:15

For my roles I was paid over £30k with perks notanotherfucker

TipseyTorvey · 14/05/2019 18:19

I've just left a job like this. For years it was manic, i mean crazy levels of work then there was a reorg and no one was sure what their job was and management were busy managing upwards so slowly we ground to a halt and after 18 months I couldn't take it anymore. Felt I was being de-skilled and my confidence to actually deliver a big project was shot so eventually got the oomf to go off and found something else. Lots of people saying "how lovely to get paid so much for doing nothing all day" but in reality it's nice for a couple of months then it becomes depressing.

nowifi · 14/05/2019 18:22

I had a similar job for 10 years! Well not exactly as it was either really really busy or completely dead. When you tell people you have nothing to do and they tell you how busy they are it used to give me even more rage AngryGrin

Now I work from home but when I have nothing to do I can just do something round the house, it's so much better!

Feel for you OP, so much!

i have done two jobs in the same public sector organisation ( a local authority) under three different managers where I had nothing or very little to do. I hated it. It utterly destroyed my self confidence and career. Part of the problem was that managers were not performance managed or in any way held accountable for how well they managed or used their staff. but received status for having staff.
Actually I was also involved in a disciplinary of a manager who was watching films on his computer all day. Thing was, the function of his entire team disappeared well over a year ago when that function was taken over by national government. HIS manager knew full well the team had no role anymore but simply wasn't doing anything about redeploying them (they worked in an area of public service with massive staff shortages to boot) because he was too busy trying to save his own skin in a restructuring - why he thought failing to offer up a massive saving of at least £200k pa by dissolving an obsolete team would help him keep his job I don't know. Oh, and by the time I was involved the disciplinary had dragged on for over a year - that's over two years of an entire team of four people with literally nothing to do. Not making this up. Thankfully the disciplinary panel threw the case out against him (I wrote up the report to make it as clear as I could the bollocks of the whole situation).

darkskyclearing · 14/05/2019 18:27

Just curious but what do others get paid to do nowt?

Shockingly - it was adult social care - a senior planning role. I'm not making that up.

BrieAndChilli · 14/05/2019 18:46

I’m curious as to what people’s actual job roles are and what tasks are in thier job description ??

TheMagicalChicken · 14/05/2019 18:49

I work in IT support. Maybe get 1 or 2 calls a day.

Not part of the Dev team. Not part of the operations.

Just there to wait for support calls and respond or pass on

SavageToast · 14/05/2019 18:56

OP, I really want your job 😢. It's not much fun at the other end of the spectrum either.

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 19:32

I would have to take a pay cut if I left, and who knows, I could leave to another 'no work' role 😳

I get just under 30k, flexible working ( or non working)...

OP posts:
SavageToast · 14/05/2019 19:37

Surely most jobs involve actual work to do though 😄🤔, I think that's a pretty small risk.

Do you think it's affecting your future employability because you're not actually getting mulch experience / challenges etc.? And is it affecting your mental health?

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 19:37

A year ago though the wages bill for people doing nothing was way over 100k!

OP posts:
SavageToast · 14/05/2019 19:37

Mulch 😄 = much

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 19:38

It is affecting my mental health massively! It's so good with my kids though as I can get time off as needed etc so I don't think I would find another job with the same flexibility

OP posts:
notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 19:40

I can big my job up if needed! If I went for another.... I'm managing my own department now of nothingness. Doing the work of 4 nothings.

OP posts:
notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 19:41

I found out the man that left who hasn't been replaced who I am 'covering' was on over 50k.

OP posts:
SavageToast · 14/05/2019 19:42

Yes, I completely appreciate that you can't necessarily know how flexible a new job will be until you start it. That uncertainty is making both DH and I feel trapped at the moment.

Re your mental health, I'd spend a proportion of my time doing training courses etc. Can you ask your employer to pay for any courses that might benefit both of you? Can you shadow any other roles to gain a better understanding of your workplace? Or think of a project that you'd like to do and pitch it to your employer?

BlueJava · 14/05/2019 19:46

Do a futurelearn course or something like that! It'll pass the time and maybe you can use it to your advantage!

notanotherfucker · 14/05/2019 19:47

I looked at future learn and you had to pay I think?
