Can we swap jobs for a couple of days?!

I love my job but we've been so busy recently ... I'd love a cup of tea and some lunch.

redcarbluecar · 09/05/2019 19:22

I had a job like this. Admin in a small company where they didn’t really know what they needed me for. Clock watching and time filling were mind numbing- the worst experience I’ve had in a job. Hope things change or you find a way to move on. I’d better ask a question so.....Have you got qualifications or training that would enable you to do something else?

notanotherfucker · 09/05/2019 19:43

I would love to swap jobs for 2 days!

I could get another job but everything round here pays about 10k less so I would be taking a pay cut. The funny thing is though my boss says I'm needed there and that I do a good job. They are literally clueless what goes on at their company.

Sounds like admin and small companies are common themes here.

It's mind numbing.

Would you like to come assist me at work tomorrow? Grin

Friday mornings are ridiculous with both intercoms n phones needing answering.

I could compensate you in iced doughnuts

notanotherfucker · 09/05/2019 19:53

I would love to... No one would notice I wasn't there...

Oh god I was recruited years ago on a team for a new service. The new service took months and months to come to anything so 6 of us had barely anything to do. I was literally crying with boredom before work. They tried to train us up to help other teams but those teams weren't busy as such so it didn't do much.

I managed to leave after 10months. Honestly I spent my day just surfing the web and reading. It was absolutely toxic and I do feel for you!

daffydowndilys · 09/05/2019 19:57

Seeing as you are getting paid, can I send you some work to do?

notanotherfucker · 09/05/2019 19:58

What work is it? 😀

OP, have you thought of doing some free online courses while you're there? There are loads if you have a google.

Xiaoxiong · 09/05/2019 20:00

Can you work as a remote assistant at the same time for someone else? Sign up with Moneypenny or google virtual PA.

Xiaoxiong · 09/05/2019 20:01

(Not the most ethical, of course!!)

EmmaC78 · 09/05/2019 20:03

Surely you need to sit down and have a proper conversation with the about it? Have you just mentioned a few times you have nothing to do and not done anything else about it? You possibly need to be more specific and give them a breakdown of how much work you have to do each day.. Do they know you watch box sets? Although it sounds fun it would drive me mad career wise to be sitting doing nothing and not progressing.

notanotherfucker · 09/05/2019 20:05

I have said, and 3 others have left for the same reason. I have made it clear why people are leaving.

Virtual assistant, I might look into it, is it all online? I couldn't sit there and take calls at my desk 😂

Can you give us some more detail??
What does your company actually do? Who else works there and what are their roles?

You could(and all things I’ve done recently in quieter moments): - reorganise the stock room, I’ve created a new spreadsheet and worked out formulas to enable people to be able to search the list and find the location of items

  • take over the social media implementation, looked the analytics and things we can do to raise our profile
  • looked into tender websites we can use to bid for work
  • look at ways to save the company money eg I got a cheaper quote for our water coolers and went back to our current company and got them to match it
SheeshKebab · 09/05/2019 20:22

Ugh I had a job like this. Thank God I had a baby🤣it is soul destroying, I couldn't get away with watching TV so I just surfed the web. It gets boring very quickly. Even worse when my boss was in because we had to look busy which is so hard to do!

SheeshKebab · 09/05/2019 20:24

Sorry I didn't ask a question. Ummmm...what box sets have you watched recently? 😏

notanotherfucker · 09/05/2019 20:28

I watched the affair last week, took a bit of concentration as had subtitles but I did it.

I had a job like this and it was a nightmare! I felt depressed at the thought of going to work. I used to spend my time reading books, doing admin for the DC, planning holidays, surfing the internet, talking on the phone to friends, doing YouTube workout videos and napping after lunch! I also used to take in small jobs like writing Christmas cards, sewing on buttons etc. I was lucky because I could close the door to my office and didn't need to look busy. The bosses genuinely thought my job was needed.... I still wonder how such a huge and successful firm could be so clueless.
I stayed because of the money, but only lasted a year. I am now in a job where I feel my contribution really is needed and I am much happier, even though I am currently earning half what I earned before!!
Do you really want to stay for much longer OP? I think jobs like that are bad for your mental health.

thankyourforthemusic · 10/05/2019 07:28

I'd start looking for another job , it won't be long before they realise you are not needed .
I've had a job where I hardly had anything to do . I did lots of online shopping and looked at the news online . It's soul destroying after a while .

Gorse · 10/05/2019 20:34

You could while away your time by reading or downloading the audiobook "Bullshit Jobs" by David Graber. It'll tell you the hows and the whys such jobs exist, how they are becoming more pervasive, who benefits etc. You will be cheered to know you are not alone, millions of people are stuck in workless jobs. A great book and thought provoking.

notanotherfucker · 13/05/2019 13:27

how is everyone doing today? another beautiful day outside...I'm just watching some crap on ITV....

OP posts:
notanotherfucker · 13/05/2019 13:28

@gorse I will look at that

TheMagicalChicken · 13/05/2019 13:31

I have had this for years.

Raised with my boss, saying I have very little to do.

Have spent a lot of work time planned holidays, home improvements, watching TV etc

I feel no shame, as I do tell them every few months or so that I am spending most of my day twiddling my thumbs and spinning in my chair.

Nothing changes. Been like it for 5 years.
