I still hear so many daft claims about certain aspects of living in KSA. Happy to confirm or deny what you've been told!

@Shmithecat2
I'm not sure, I can't find exact recent figures. MBS did state a few months ago that the death penalty could be restricted to murderers only though. Leaving rapists, armed robbers, drug traffickers and terrorists to life in prison instead. He's pretty progressive and has done wonders in his role in a very short time. I do believe he'll come good.

130 executed in Saudi Arabia in 2019, most of whom were bin Salman’s opponents

Saudi has nothing on hate and bile compared to the people on this thread.

Shmithecat2 · 12/10/2019 13:44

@MBSisatyrant

So, it hasn't happened yet. What's your point?

Shmithecat2 · 12/10/2019 13:45

@onioncrumble impressive, isn't it?

Varric · 24/10/2019 15:36

Sorry @downwithmbs, only just seen your post. Did you have a question?

partyofsixteen · 17/02/2021 13:34

I’m sorry you lost me at “our compound” 👀

TripleHHH · 17/02/2021 13:36

What does this thread keep being resurrected?

crosstalk · 17/02/2021 15:40

@showmethegin

I will now, and be emailing the CEOs and not using those shops

crosstalk · 17/02/2021 17:11

And for those who are interested in compounds - it seems to be an Indonesian word, kampong, or protected village. Plenty of compounds/kampongs in Asia. My DPs who worked in Africa didn't see the need for them 1940-70 but they're now common across the world including compounds for ageing people in Florida, and clearly UAE. Also RSA.

Dullardmullard · 18/02/2021 06:42

How are you coping in lockdown?

Have there been any rules changed in the compound as in comings and goings for essentials?

Or have you decided to bail and come back to the UK.

Yes I know this is an old thread but relevant with what is happening in the world too.

RapunzelHadExtensions · 19/02/2021 14:07

I know this is an old thread.

I love how OP posted a photo of the compound to try and show how nice it was and it literally looks like a hot Chessington world of adventures.

clearly not lost enough to respond...

It's what they called.

Hi! I came back to the UK last March for one week.... lockdown happened, KSA closed their borders, so after 4 months of not knowing when KSA would be open again, I made the choice to stay in the UK for now. DH is back out there doing his job, ds started and settled well into reception in Sept 2020 (the reason why we decided to stay).

Saudi had a very strict lockdown - nothing but supermarkets and pharmacies open, no travelling out of disctrict, harsh curfews - at their worst, only allowed out of home between 9am and 3pm!!, with the borders closed only repat flights were allowed to leave, only nationals allowed to enter, and it has managed the virus quite well. Their figures are low, and the vaccine rollout is going well - DH has already had both his jabs out there.

I did wish I was back there a few times during lockdown 1 and 2 - I felt a bit lost and stressed here, with no home of my own etc. But it's OK now, ds and I are pretty settled, there are new babies in my family due soon, so I get to be here for that etc. DH will be back for good after a couple of years, but as soon as some sort of normality returns with the flights, we can start to travel back and forth in the holidays etc. It'll be fine.

lol, having been to both, it's nothing like that, nor did I claim it to be. It is a very beautiful compound though. One of the best in the Middle East, going by the awards its won in the years since it opened.

What do you think about the recent sportswashing by Saudi Arabia? Do you think bringing in mainstream international sports can result in a cultural change or do you think that - like many expats - the sportspeople care more about money than human rights or the safety of their gay and female fans.

LimeKiwi · 19/01/2024 19:25

@thecallofthemountain seeing as the OP started the thread in 2018 would be interesting to see if they're still here 😬
Plus this has dredged up a zombie name for me, forgot about this one lol

A bit of both tbh. Cultural change is happening, which is great, but yeah, the pro sports folk are definitely unable to turn down 9 figure salaries 😂
