While a few issues were noted regarding ease of cleaning and the chair's relatively large size when folded, our tester Tamsin was very happy with the Silver Cross Gourmet Highchair overall - particularly its look and adjustability. She confirmed she would happily recommend it to other parents, felt it offered great value for money and loved the design, calling it "just a beautiful chair." She added, "It's a great, stylish highchair that's worked perfectly for our journey into weaning, and we can see this lasting us for many years to come."

Bottom line: A stylish, sturdy highchair that grows with your baby - ideal for everyday use, though it's a bit heavy and tricky to clean.

How we tested the Silver Cross Gourmet Highchair

Mum-of-one Tamsin tested the Gourmet Highchair thoroughly over a period of six weeks. During this time, she used it daily for her seven-month-old son - both for meals during the weaning process and for play. She assessed the chair carefully against a range of important factors (listed above) and provided scores accordingly, along with extensive testing notes.

How did the Silver Cross Gourmet Highchair arrive?

"The chair arrived fully assembled except for the tray, which was very simple to attach."

The design is beautiful, so the style and overall look are top for us. But it is also very practical in terms of use and ability to grow with our child.

How easy is the Gourmet Highchair to use day-to-day?

"It’s very easy to use day-to-day with our seven-month-old," explained Tamsin. "The tray is easy to remove to get our little one in and out, and the five-point safety straps are great for knowing our son is safe if I’m cooking in the kitchen."

How easy is the Gourmet Highchair to keep clean?

Keeping a highchair clean is one of the top priorities of any weaning parent, and with a removable tray and wipe-down leatherette finish, Silver Cross lists ease of cleaning as one of the Gourmet's top features. While Tamsin said it was "relatively easy to keep clean", she pointed out that "if it's been a really messy dinner, cleaning the whole removable tray and connecting part can be quite difficult."

She added that although the stitching detail on the chair was a lovely aesthetic touch, it let the design down in terms of practicality: "Once food is in the stitching, it's a real job to clean it out!"

Is the Gourmet Highchair adjustable?

Silver Cross claims the Gourmet grows with your child, with seven adjustable height positions, three adjustable calf-rest positions for growing legs and a lie-flat recline seat. Tamsin praised its adjustability, saying it will be "perfect for us as our son grows."

As with most mid-range highchairs on the market, Silver Cross advises that the Gourmet can be used until a child reaches either 15kg or three years, but thanks to its adjustable features it can be used from newborn.

I can see us using this for the next three years due to how adjustable it is. When our son is older we can easily remove the tray and lower the seat so that he can sit up at the table with us.

How portable is the Silver Cross Gourmet Highchair?

At just over 8kg (with the tray), Silver Cross claims the Gourmet is lightweight and perfect for transporting. However, Tamsin said its size meant they didn't tend to fold it away. "It's quite a heavy chair, so we leave it out at the end of the dining table," she said, adding: "As it's such a beautiful black highchair, we don't feel the need to put it away."
