Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

We're up to 963 posts so I've started a new thread for when this one gets full.
Will this be the first one where I've set everything up correctly? Unlikely.

So many good things may be about to happen, which I won't list in case I miss any out, that it seemed OK and not at all tempting fate to bring that into the title.

The thread is here.

I noticed a new thread and thought I'd missed a very very busy time at the Bluey, but then I found this nice comfy old thread still tootling alongSmile
Thank you Glad for the new thread.

I hope you have a very decompress-y weekend, Shiny, you need it. I hope your DH gets good news from work - or I suppose you have to think about Plan B just in case, and if that is the case, I hope there are positive new possibilities to thing aboutFlowers

Pasta, I hope Mr Pasta Snr is 'responding well to treatment' as the cliché says - re--hydration can bring about a very quick improvement, and hopefully it's all making him feel more comfortable, more 'himself'.

The dynamic between you and your brother and your dad sounds familiar to me - family dynamics are very irrational, I've decided, and one sibling can say and do things another one would neve get away with; sometimes one sibling gets a lot of gratitude and credit as well, which is not necessarily proportionate to what they've actually done😒
I remember my mother rejecting suggestions I'd make: 'You don't know what goes on, I'm here every day looking after him' but in fact it was my fresh 'macro' look that IDed things that would improve the situation for both my parents.

Wishing you and your dad and your brother well, you're a unique little unit, working things out between your unique selvesFlowers

Kitty & I are having a lazy day for once.

I think this thread title was my favourite so far.

EdithStourton · Yesterday 13:50

Good news on the book/ agent, anony.

And yes, Shiny, decompress. Constant pressure is absolutely exhausting.

And here's hoping Mr Pasta Senior continues to improve. We have an elderly family member who will sometimes listen to me but not to other people, possibly because I have scarcity value. Technically she has capacity, in that she knows the day of the week, can provide her birth date etc etc, but for the past year or so she has not been rational. Thankfully she has been persuaded to go into a care home. It's not what she wanted in an ideal world, but she did at least recognise that she was struggling at home.

Enjoy the lazy day, you two!

I was thinking the same thing - ' daughters and sisters of earth, frost, feathers, fur, scales and spines' was lovely thank you Glad, and deserves to be remembered.💙

Edith, I think you've hit the nail on the head with having 'scarcity value' i.e. just being yourself, not part of 'Team-People-Telling-Me-What-To-Do-In-My-Own-Home'Smile

'Going into a home' sounds awful, but I have experience of elders flourishing when they went into a nursing home, leaving behind all the worries of leaks in roofs and which bin goes out this week and I can't reach the top shelf anymore and who's that at the front door, should I open it....

They put on weight, relaxed, looked better, eating healthily and regularly, had company and chats...

I keep reminding myself of that as I get older and less mobile, will I be sensible like that?😏

WearyAuldWumman · Yesterday 14:11

Catching up on the Mr Pasta Snr news and sending best wishes.

I keep hoping I can find a good care home for myself, but in Fife it seems to be that you have to to whichever one has a space.

ShinyBlueTractor · Yesterday 14:50

I agree with others, really good, quite spine-tingling Bluestocking title, and so I'll be just a touch sorry when the door swings closed... but onwards! As always!

And thanks @MarieDeGournay for the good wishes re DH. You are exactly right - hope for the best, plan for the worst etc. The process has been dispiriting, so it's nice to see him having some fun and putting it to one side for now

My dad might have to go into a home at some point. He’s living alone at the moment but getting increasingly scatty & we don’t know how long he’ll be able to cope. And none of us live that close.

I have a batch of sourdough rolls proofing & at some point I’m going to batch cook lemon & tomato dal with a friend’s fresh tomatoes. Then tomorrow I’m visiting friends to meet their new rescue kitten.

I've just got back from That London, having spent an enjoyable afternoon with a very good friend, spending money on indulging my magpie tendencies. Quattro formaggi pizza for lunch. Doubt I'll eat much for dinner! Foot stood up to use quite well, it's definitely getting better.
I'm off to poke my nose into the new premises.

Magpiecomplex · Yesterday 18:01

Right, anyone know whether we're moving by tractor or camel or galleons this time?

MyrtleLion · Yesterday 18:04

Canal boat. Steady pace, 4mph, watching the world go by.

AngleofRepose · Yesterday 18:06

I'm going to start packing things up, and I've got Gubbins with me so she doesn't wander off and get lost. The rest of the gerbils are pretty distracted, what with the other three gone missing! No one seems to know what to do, so I've booked the moving tractors and had a word with Carmela and the other camels to be extra less-grumbly because we all have more important things to worry about than whether the new place has the right kind of hay in the stable and enough extra curricular activities.

Even Carmela was relatively subdued when I told her about the gerbils.

I'll pack up the craft things in time for the tractors, and Gubbins and I will take a couple of boxes over to the new place. We have triangles. And snacks.

MyrtleLion · Yesterday 18:06

Gosie is ready but will be on the new thread.

We'll have to split the load between canal boat and tractors...the craft stuff is out of control...

Triangles, plural? Oh dear.

I know someone who grew up near here but who married an Australian and they lived there. They came back for a family occasion, and while they were here her father became very ill. She and her DH moved in with him for years, with carers visiting each day, each of them going home for a month by themselves every year. After a few years they wanted to go back together for a month so the father went temporarily into a care home.
When they returned he said he wanted to stay there permanently, so he did.

My widowed DSIL has also chosen to be in a care home, after having live-in carers for several months.

It is a difficult time for you, but it’s possible that, if your father does go into a home, he might actually prefer it to not quite managing at home.

Goodness, I was forgetting my carefully hidden knitting supplies. I say they are hidden away from moths, who love cashmere, but really it’s because I don’t like to share. I’d better get them before The Bluestocking is locked up with me inside.

I wouldn’t fit in a crate.

Who has the key?

I think there was mention of two triangles upthread?

There was. I was hoping it was a momentary aberration.

AsWithGlad · Yesterday 18:54

As With Glad gerbils of old
Did the guiding sound behold
Gubbins dinging, soft and light
Triangle chiming, tuning bright

So, dear Bluestockingers, that’s you,
Travel to this new thread too.
