I've caught up with the latest Gosie episode, and I see I'm scheduled to go to Paris when I've sorted out the business in Lincolnshire - I think I'm getting to the bottom of it, so I should be free to pop over to my birthplace soon.
Although I'm called 'de Gournay', the family name is actually Le Jars. I was born in Paris, we moved to Gournay when I was about 12 and that's where we got our posh-sounding name from.
I didn't enjoy being stuck in the sticks, but at least we had a good library so I taught myself Latin and Greek and studied the classics, and became a totes fangirl for the works of Michel de Montaigne, who of course I later met and became friends with, lucky me.
When my mother - who never approved of my bookishness, and my lack of interest in clothes and boys - passed away, I was out of rural Normandy like a bat out of hell, and joined my brother in Paris. I got a place of my own, started writing and making a [sort of] living out of it, which was pretty much unheard of for a woman back then.
The rest is history! And literature! And political philosophy! and feminism!
So I look forward to going back. I'd love to have any of the gerbils with me, but perhaps Gendarme would be a good travelling companion for me - I have to face up to the fact that I'm not as young as I used to be. so having a brave little trained bodyguard gerbil would be nice.
