Booby-trapped Trans tape on Edinburgh lampposts injures council worker during removal

For a couple of years a TRA has been placing pink/blue/white tape on lampposts in Morningside in Edinburgh. Also stickers and other graffiti.
It seems theTRA has got fed up of the council removing their pink/blue/white tape from the lampposts and decided to booby trap them. They have put some substance on the tape, presumably to deter their removal. However, this has led to the hospitalisation a council worker who was removing the tape (and a major response from the emergency services sealing off a major road).
They then appeared a few hours later and put more tape (and substance) on!
This had half of Edinburgh gridlocked last night

I live nearby and regularly walk past this area, and the tape thing has been happening for years. But although I am GC, I didn't really mind it and thought it was a pretty non-violent way for someone to express themselves. We are OK with suffragette-colour stickers it seems, and lampposts and electricity boxes often have stickers and posters all over them in Edinburgh generally, and even in fancy Morningside.

(I'm not sure on the law regarding putting up stickers or tape in flag colours and whether it is illegal, but I would not see trans colours in themselves as threatening. Certainly I'd rather the police prioritised various other things.)

Hazardous substances is obviously very different and would clearly be illegal and needs investigating, but I'm wary of acting like the stickering alone was a massive problem just because it was TRA-themed.

Technically its vandalism and if it cant be removed without damage it becomes criminal damage.
Though I can't remember the last time cops did anything about vandalism in Scotland so if im honest the only way I could imagine the police doing anything is if it was done in front of them and the person doing it was being a twat to the cops

That tweet doesn't give any indication of who the person is or how we are supposed to know its a man/TW as opposed to a woman. Has he been identified? If so, where?

He's apparently well known locally and the cops raided his house

Latest article has removed the reference to the suspect being a woman:
https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/crime/arrest-made-after-substance-found-on-edinburgh-lamppost-8936585

If this is a man then I'm pretty shocked the Edinburgh Evening News originally reported him as being a woman. The coy references to pink and blue tape is one thing (would make the story a bit baffling to any readers not familiar with trans colours), but actively lying about the suspect's sex is another level

Police Scotland released a statement saying that a woman was arrested however that would be a male woman. Police Scotland have so much form for this sort of shit.
The paper will have amended the reporting because enough people will have contacted them to say that its a man but the police wont have updated their statement

Thanks @Hoardasurass

So it is the police who are providing misinformation rather than the press?

(Although I guess the original source of misinformation is the man claiming to be a woman)

Don’t name or describe him on here - it’s a live case and jigsaw ID got that nationalist man jailed!

Naming an accused person isn’t an offence. We have an open justice system in which the expectation is that accused people can be identified.

Jigsaw identification refers to information that could lead to the identity of people who have an expectation of anonymity- mainly children and complainers in sex cases.

They might not be lying per se - if police say it’s a woman then in theory (though we know not in reality) that should be good enough.

So it seems likely that this has happened:

A man who claims to be a woman has carried out a terrorist act in support of men who claim to be women

Upon him being arrested, the police have released a statement saying he is a woman

The press have reported that he is a woman, and avoided mentioning that the terrorist act was in support of men claiming to be women

There are several stories there, if only journalists were brave enough to cover them

I'm surprised they not been named now they've been charged. But it'll have to go to court at some point — they can't keep it secret forever.

Is that right? It’s so complicated - why was that man was jailed for id ing the woman o. The salmond case? She had anonymity (though we all know who she is) (so same issue really?)

Seriestwo · 24/08/2026 01:13

Also, great name @JakeyRolling

Is Scotland the vast majority of people aren’t named before their first court appearance.

court reporters seem to be a dying breed but there seems to be at least one in Edinburgh (going by local newspaper bylines) so hopefully he’s on it.

Because in that case there was a specific court order banning identification (that they should have been given automatically as complainers in a sex case)

Seriestwo · 24/08/2026 10:45

Thanks, that is helfpul. Unlike google.

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2026 13:00

Given the alarm and serious response by emergency services, I think this is definitely something that needs a police statement and court report.

There are quite a few good and stoic journos in Scotland. Hopefully some of them are on this.

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2026 13:25

Well, took me less than 20 minutes to find a trans identifying man who lives in Morningside and likes to do street 'art' and is the correct age. So I assume any journo worth their salt would find this out similarly.

NebulousSadTimes · 24/08/2026 13:28

@ArabellaScott is it the same one named on Twitter the day before?

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2026 13:30

I don't know who was named on X! The one I am looking at has history of police charges in relation to threatening women.

NebulousSadTimes · 24/08/2026 13:35

It was the day before 😉. That is a monumental clue. As was that and neither will mean anything if it's not him 😆

I'll shut up now, I'm boring myself! Blush

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2026 13:36

Ah. Yes. That's the one.

NebulousSadTimes · 24/08/2026 13:39

Ah, good, thank you. I don't feel quite so silly now 😆

MintBird · 24/08/2026 20:29

If we're talking about lampposts can we talk about the far-right who keep attaching flags to lampposts? Some of them are at half-mast (which is odd because that usually means someone has died), some obstruct the visibility of road signs and many become completely wrecked in the British weather and don't look too good.

Of course we can talk about it. Any flag that causes an obstruction should be removed. Are these far-right flag raisers applying toxic substances to them to injure the workers employed to remove them? That would be deplorable.

I’d assumed that’s cause the far right knobbers were too short! But seriously, piss off with your flags. Do they harm or help with community cohesion? Harm, so off they should fuck.
