Booby-trapped Trans tape on Edinburgh lampposts injures council worker during removal

For a couple of years a TRA has been placing pink/blue/white tape on lampposts in Morningside in Edinburgh. Also stickers and other graffiti.
It seems theTRA has got fed up of the council removing their pink/blue/white tape from the lampposts and decided to booby trap them. They have put some substance on the tape, presumably to deter their removal. However, this has led to the hospitalisation a council worker who was removing the tape (and a major response from the emergency services sealing off a major road).
They then appeared a few hours later and put more tape (and substance) on!

Well done to the amazing feminists who have been repeatedly reporting this issue to the council (and seem to have managed to get Edinburgh council to do something about it - which is quite an achievement in itself). I hope this arrest might prevent this man from doing this again. But, I am sad that some innocent council worked may have been harmed in some way in the process. I hope they are OK.

Surprised faces out everyone!

Police say they arrested a "woman" and it turns out to be a man? Did not see that coming again, from miles away. At. All.

If he's been arrested and charged has his identity been released?

I have been known to misspell 'violet'.

ScottishTERF · 22/08/2026 19:33

OMG. I have just read speculation as to what the 'substance' was. Something only men can produce! And we are supposed to believe it is not a sexual fetish.

The report I read said they were taken to hospital and checked over, but substance was found to be harmless.

Something a bit odd about it all.

A substance can be an irritant and downright unpleasant without being strictly speaking harmful or toxic.

For obvious reasons (I'm a gardener) I'm not listing them but something like pepper spray is a well known example.

Frankly if it's done deliberately to cause fright - as seems quite likely - I would also still consider that harm enough someone should be commenting on it.

I bet if it was union jack flags suspected and there was some substance released and they had to close the road and take them to hospital and test it would be front page news.

But because it's transgender colours it's being downplayed and ignored.

They could easily have caught who is putting these up by now too.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 22/08/2026 20:44

Yeah, I wondered when it was first mentioned if it was something like itching powder - that would cause a reaction, and if you didn't know what it was, might be feared to be something worse, resulting in the workers being taken to hospital until it was identified and confirmed to be irritating but not dangerous.

Anyone who travels through this area will have seen over the last few years that a TRA has been putting tape, stickers and trans related graffiti in a very specific area.
The media though are being very coy about it.

The Scottish media are controlled by the SNP - have been for years

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 23/08/2026 05:35

It's amazing how quickly he was caught when they put some effort into it, they could have done it ages ago considering it's been going on for 3 years. They could have given him a police caution or something, it might have stopped him, instead he kept getting away with it so his activities escalated and people were hurt.
If he deliberately applied something, then he intended to do harm, so he should be charged ABH at least.

JMSA · 23/08/2026 05:51

Fucking nutjob.

Smokeywater · 23/08/2026 06:14

With CCTV being available and facial recognition - hasn't that reached Edinburgh yet? This could have been sorted ages ago.

How there’s not a criminal investigation into this and a bigger media presence is crazy!

‘peace, love and acceptance’ yea right…this is an actual if violence which is happening more and more!

SidewaysOtter · 23/08/2026 06:54

They’ve arrested a woman who turns out to actually be a man?

I'm shocked. SHOCKED I tell you.

It's a man in a frock! Even trans-addled Police Scotland could have used that to narrow down the possible culprit had they wished to. I'm certain it would have been an open secret.

I live nearby and regularly walk past this area, and the tape thing has been happening for years. But although I am GC, I didn't really mind it and thought it was a pretty non-violent way for someone to express themselves. We are OK with suffragette-colour stickers it seems, and lampposts and electricity boxes often have stickers and posters all over them in Edinburgh generally, and even in fancy Morningside.

(I'm not sure on the law regarding putting up stickers or tape in flag colours and whether it is illegal, but I would not see trans colours in themselves as threatening. Certainly I'd rather the police prioritised various other things.)

Hazardous substances is obviously very different and would clearly be illegal and needs investigating, but I'm wary of acting like the stickering alone was a massive problem just because it was TRA-themed.

WhatterySquash · 23/08/2026 09:17

How do we know the person is male - presumably this comes from a source who knows for sure who it is?

Doesn't surprise me at all if it is a male and the police are lying, but every time this happens, it pisses more people off and helps to get the message through to them that they're massively undermining public trust.

Cordeliasdemonbabies · 23/08/2026 10:49

That tweet doesn't give any indication of who the person is or how we are supposed to know its a man/TW as opposed to a woman. Has he been identified? If so, where?

Yes, putting stickers and other unauthorised material on public or private property is illegal.

Edinburgh council evidently don't think putting up unauthorised material is acceptable, or it wouldn't have sent workers to remove it. Repeatedly.

Logically the reason some substance has been added to the material is to cause the council to stop sending workers to remove it, for fear of danger to those workers. That is undoubtedly criminal and IMO verging in terrorism.

Atoxicsewerofhate · 23/08/2026 12:17

I imagine whatever was put on the sticker might have reacted with whatever the council employees use to clean them off with. If they smelt something toxic they would quite rightly seek help

well based on X - people have seen him do this for some time so locals know who it is.

Or more likely they think it’s TERFs removing their stickers and wanted to harm them. Either way still criminal.

See either it’s an act of aggression or it isn’t- either suffragette colours and woman stickers and definitions are ok and trans colours are ok, or neither.

And of course not defacing public property. For anyone.
