As many new mums will agree, trying to rediscover your style after having a baby can prove tricky. Whether that’s due to your changing shape, your baby’s feeding needs, or your body’s healing journey.

And let’s face it, when sleep is in short supply, those creative style juices might not flow as much when we’re standing in front of our wardrobe. Life looks different now, and so do your priorities and those once-favourite pieces might be waiting patiently for their comeback. For now, it’s often about grabbing what’s clean(ish), throwing it on, and hoping it survives until lunch without a surprise poonami…

But finding outfits that make us feel great can provide a real boost. Embracing your evolving style can help reconnect you to you and remind you that this season of life, though full of change, can also be full of fun when it comes to fashion.

It’s a common discussion point amongst our Mumsnet community, with Cotswoldmama sharing recently: “It's hard when you're a first time mum as you don't feel like you anymore and I was breast feeding all the time.”

“For me the journey was tough,” Happywifehappylife18 added. “I went from a size 8/10 to a 14. All the clothes that I would choose to wear before no longer suited my body. It has taken almost two years to adjust and be able to find my personality in clothing again and feel confident.”

That’s why Uniqlo is such a popular choice with our Mumsnet community. The Japanese clothing brand is a company ‘‘Made for All’, with a founding mission to make everyone's lives better through the power of clothing. And the generous array of fashionable and functional basics are perfect for postpartum mums.

What makes Uniqlo clothing so good for postpartum mums?

Beyond offering durable clothing at an affordable price point, Uniqlo incorporates several unique design features that deliver both style and practicality.

The brand’s HEATTECH range is one of its most innovative creations. Crafted with Japanese-designed thermal technology, it fits like a second skin and provides warmth without the bulk. This makes it ideal for breastfeeding mums, as you can stay cosy without needing to remove layers when nursing.

For warmer weather, Uniqlo’s AIRism range is designed to release heat and moisture, helping to keep you cool and comfortable. It’s a game-changer for postpartum mums dealing with night sweats or lactation-related hot flashes.

For those recovering from a C-section, Uniqlo offers a generous selection of elasticated waistbands and buttery soft leggings that prioritise comfort. If you’re after easy-to-throw-on styles, options like flattering maxi dresses, buttoned shirts, or zipped jackets are perfect choices.

And for days (or weeks) when staying in your pyjamas feels like the best option, Uniqlo has a gorgeous selection of  loungewear to keep you comfortable at home.

Mumsnet tips for easy postpartum styling

We’re fortunate to have such an incredible community of real mums who share their honest, unfiltered views on all things motherhood. When it comes to post-baby styling, we’ve rounded up some of our Mumsnetters’ key tips.

1) Pair high-waisted leggings with a stylish jumper

For a failsafe winter outfit, Pollyanna123456 recommends pairing high-waisted leggings or jeans with a stylish jumper.

For weaning mums, she suggests opting for darker colours to conceal stains - like this lambswool crew neck jumper (Uniqlo, £34.90) in a forest green. The wool is soft against the skin and will keep you warm on long walks with the pram.

Soft leggings are another great choice, particularly if you’re recovering from a C-section. These HEATTECH ultra stretch high rise leggings (Uniqlo, £34.90) are designed to look like jeans, featuring buttons, stitch work, and even a back pocket. However, they offer ultra stretch and a fully elasticated waist for ultimate comfort. Plus, the HEATTECH fabric is breathable while keeping you warm.

2) Shirts with cycle shorts are a great summer staple

Oddbox shared recently, “shirts with leggings/cycling shorts were always my go to for breastfeeding!”

She recommended the cotton shirt (Uniqlo, £29.90) in a striped design or this soft flannel skipper shirt (Uniqlo, £29.90), which comes in four colours. And while we know it’s not quite the season for cycle shorts, these knit ribbed trousers are a great alternative for colder weather. They come in a lovely selection of colours, are machine-washable, and feel soft on the tummy.

3) Wide trousers can be flattering

A wide-leg silhouette can elongate your legs, making them look taller. They’re easy to dress down with sandals or trainers and elevate with statement heels or chunky boots.

FuzzyDonkey said these wide leg corduroy trousers (Uniqlo, £34.90) are “forgiving and flattering”. They’re also machine-washable for easy care.

Pair them with the ribbed high neck t-shirt (Uniqlo, £19.90) for an effortlessly chic off-duty vibe. The long sleeves and high neck provide warmth, while the breathable cotton fabric is perfect if you’re dealing with lactation sweats.

MoominMumu loves the look of the DRY sweat wide trousers (£24.90) for their practicality. They come with pockets and are made with quick-dry technology - perfect for rain showers or baby-wee mishaps.

4) Anything soft and stretchy is a winner

Comfort is key when dressing a post-baby body, and Lolabythesea said a crew neck cardigan like this 100% merino crew neck cardigan (Uniqlo, £34.90)  is a must-have. It has buttons for easy opening, and the various colours will brighten up your wardrobe. Made of 100% wool, it adds a luxurious feel and reviews confirm that it’s soft and lightweight.

On your bottom half, these HEATTECH fleece lined joggers (Uniqlo, £24.90) will surely be a welcomed addition to your wardrobe for winter. Available in five colours, these sleek, no bulk joggers will keep you extra toasty while running errands.

5) Focus on easy layering pieces

Whether you need a thick coat for early morning walks or something comfy to throw on for the school run, our Mumsnetters agree that layers are key.

Beabeautiful loves this soufflé yarn dress (Uniqlo, £34.90), describing it as buttery soft and beautifully skimming over the body. Pair it with thick tights and winter boots, and you’re good to go.

DoublePeonies added that the HEATTECH extra warm cotton scoop neck t-shirt (Uniqlo, £19.90) is a great base layer, while NewUserNewName loved coat like this seamless down coat (Uniqlo, £149.90), noting that its loose fit made it comfortable during her post-birth healing.

6) Find those statement accessories

Accessories can transform an outfit, and unlike clothing, they always fit — no matter how much your body is changing.

PrettyFox said in a recent forum. “When my baby was small I just wanted comfy and practical clothes, so accessories were key to make my outfit more interesting.”

She added that Uniqlo’s round mini shoulder bag was a staple of her wardrobe. It comes in a wide range of colours, is water-repellent (perfect for British downpours), and features zipped pockets to keep your valuables safe.

7) Most importantly, be kind to yourself

Your body has evolved, but so can your style. When building a post-baby wardrobe, avoid fad trends and focus on timeless basics that work from season to season.

That’s where Uniqlo excels - creating quality pieces that combine fashion with function, making them true investments for your wardrobe.

If you put something on and it doesn’t make you smile, it shouldn’t be in your wardrobe.
