Daily Mail RICHARD LITTLEJOHN: I've always admired Linda Bellos, and it's outrageous that she should be dragged to court for vowing to defend herself against violent trans activists

My goodness, a Richard Littlejohn article with which I wholly concur!

Procrastinator1 · 31/08/2018 08:10

Probably for the first time ever I agree with Richard Littlejohn. almost every word.

We alI note Corbyn's silence too.

RedToothBrush · 31/08/2018 08:13

'trans taliban' is going to make some people explode.

The framing of the article is particularly interesting and deliberately designed to deflect 'transphobia'.

It draws a line between trans activists and traditional trans sexuals. Which has to be acknowledged as responsible.

Instead it names political extremist as political extremism.

carceralfeminist · 31/08/2018 08:15

Quote from the article: No one wants to return to the bad old days when James, now Jan, Morris had to travel to Morocco for surgery. But that doesn’t mean we should all have to submit to the tyranny and intolerance of the Trans Taliban.

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 31/08/2018 08:15

It's a strange old world when we nod and share DM articles.

Waiting for TRAs to berate us now for agreeing. I just want the message out there to a mass audience.

Thanks for the link. A surprising but welcome bit of commentary from the Mail.

carceralfeminist · 31/08/2018 08:17

Mate, he is showing loud public support for Linda Bellos despite acknowledging the chasm of political differences.
The truth has to be something we can all rally around.
Thanks Richard!

boatyardblues · 31/08/2018 08:19

I wonder if Richard is one of our journo lurkers. He covered an awful lot in a short piece. Was interesting to learn more about Jan, who comes across as a thoughtful and very accomplished individual.

Starkstaring · 31/08/2018 08:21

One of the best articles yet - covers pretty much all the bases. I am pretty sure 98% of the population would agree with every word.

CallingDannyBoy · 31/08/2018 08:25

Fantastic article -I’m finding it difficult to believe that I agree with one of his articles. It was a really well thought out piece.

Charliethefeminist · 31/08/2018 08:25

He makes a great point about Corbyn which hadn't occurred to me.

It's really great, and he doesn't blame feminists, like so many right-wingers. Also the comments about Jan seem genuine rather than lip service. He spied an opportunity with Jan's book and he took it. Good work.

JillCrewesmum · 31/08/2018 08:27

I wonder if he will face any backlash - being a man and all.

Charliethefeminist · 31/08/2018 08:28

It's so easy for right wingers to write a piece on 'pc gorn mad, what do these feminists expect if they want equality, far left eating itself, why should we care', all the usual tropes. This isn't that, at all, it seems very thoughtful.

RedToothBrush · 31/08/2018 08:32

Stressing the intelligence and well roundedness of Jan certainly creates a juxtaposition against the one trick ponies who use their identity to hide what they lack in ability.

carceralfeminist · 31/08/2018 08:37

These right-wing, skeptic, and centrist types need to start realizing it's not a group of "crazy feminists," it's a non-partisan, ragtag bunch of ordinary women who are sounding the alarm. This systematic persecution for "wrongthink" is coming for everyone else next.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 31/08/2018 08:38

This is a very considered piece. I like the fact that he acknowledges respect for Linda, despite ideological differences.

Mature political discourse should be about examining issues carefully and trying to build consensus.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/08/2018 08:39

But...but...I don't WANT to be on the same side of an argument as Richard Littlejohn!!! SadConfusedShock

IrenetheQuaint · 31/08/2018 08:40

Excellent piece by Richard Littlejohn (these are not words I expected ever to find myself writing).

I'm a fan of Jan Morris' writing and read her (very good) book about her transition, Conundrum, many years ago. It made me a strong defender of transsexual rights, as indeed I still am. Understanding the difference between old-style transsexuals and the modern trans lobby has been a depressing journey for me.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/08/2018 08:44

Bugger it, it's a really well-written, balanced, reasonable article.

IAmWhoYouSayIAm · 31/08/2018 08:47

First time ever, I’ve shared it on my social media...feeling more prepared for a civilised discussion if it is challenged (thanks to MNers)

carceralfeminist · 31/08/2018 08:47

I can't stop laughing at the phrase "Trans Taliban"

Datun · 31/08/2018 08:54

Excellent article.

Littlejohn has had to stay away from the issue because his writing about it was implicated by TRAs in the suicide of a transwoman. Despite her saying it had nothing to do with the press in her suicide note, I believe.

But I suspect, he must now feel that the issue is way beyond any hesitancy on his part.

Totally agree with red over the Jan Morris vs the militant ‘trans’ lobby is now the most bigoted, intolerant pressure group in modern Britain.

Smart article.

Igneococcus · 31/08/2018 08:55

There was a long article about Jan Morris in the Times yesterday for anyone who wants to read it:

FFS Richard Littlejohn, what are you playing at? They’ll come after you for being a TERF. Oh hang on, you’re a man. It’s ok calm down, they only do that to women.

All joking/sarcasm aside, thank you for your very well thought out piece. Good grief I just thanked Richard Littlejohn. Confused goes for a lie down
