Next steps for transgender equality - inclusion, rights and services

There are some influential and interesting speakers at this conference which can be followed via twitter using #WSPFEvents.

The event is covering many of the issues discussed here including media, schools, prisons, health, policy & legislation etc

Nic Williams from Fairplay4women is amongst those tweeting: twitter.com/AskNic

Background:
"This timely seminar will consider policy priorities for transgender equality.

In the context of Brexit and uncertainty around the future of current equality legislation such as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, delegates will discuss the current landscape of transgender equality.

Attendees will also discuss priorities for transgender physical and mental health, in the context of Government proposals to streamline and de-medicalise the process for changing gender, the NHS England consultation on how Gender Identity Clinics will deliver specialised outpatient services and how surgical units will deliver surgical interventions, and reports that some transgender people are waiting over two years for an initial consultation with an NHS Gender Identity Clinic.

Further sessions focus on key issues for transgender equality in the workplace and how employers can support transition, tackling issues in the criminal justice system and how schools and universities can create inclusive environments, as well as transgender coverage and representation in the media."

This is really worrying - and I presume more of the same? How many other than Nic are speaking up for women and how many for trans while ignoring women?

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 13:05

Speakers have included:
Dr Polly Carmichael (GIDs Tavistock), Bex Stimpson (Head of Trans InclusionStonewall), Liz Barker (Lords), Helen Belcher (Trans Media Watch, James Palmer (Medical Director Specialised Services, NHS England), Sean Dellenty (Dept education), Ollie Entwistle (Head of LGBT policy, Govt. Women & Equalities), Megan Key (probation), Tunge Ogungbesan (Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Succession BBC), Julia Neal (Head: The Education Union)...

SwearyG and Transgender Trend also there and tweeting.

(apologies for any errors, info is from Twitter comments #WSPFEvents and not checked)

A good set of speakers

Pratchet · 04/06/2018 14:52

It's insanity by committee. It's unbelievable.

GenderApostate · 04/06/2018 14:57

TRAs have already turned on Tavistock/GIDS.

Makes them look so calm and rational, not all all like swivel eyed loons 😉

I was there for some of it. I heard a neurosurgeon say it's got to be a good thing that more young people are being referred to GI clinics.

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 15:35

What do you think they meant? Its a bit ambiguous.

OP posts:
Pratchet · 04/06/2018 15:38

I don't know. The NHS seems to believe there's such a thing as having an opposite sex brain. Tons of cash are being spent across health, schools, social care, prisons and probation on that premise. Scary.

Pratchet · 04/06/2018 15:39

I missed some of the speeches. Should have made notes. But some things they said stuck in my brain.

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 15:51

I think I saw somewhere that all delegates would receive a transcript of speeches??

Its a shame it wasn't streamed.

The NHS is apparently giving boys who believe they are in the wrong gender HPV, they apparently allow trans women to donate blood when they have sexual relations with men.

How is this right?

Either all boys should have HPV and all men should not have to have a waiting period before donating blood, or there is discrimination against bisexual and gay boys/men their is no risk, or there is a risk, what is it?

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 16:13

HPV vaccine:
(Extract)
"The NHS will give a lifesaving cancer vaccine to teenage boys – but only if they ‘identify’ as girls, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

New official advice makes clear that transgender girls – that is, those born male – will be offered the Gardasil jab so they fit in with ‘their peers’.

The Mail on Sunday have been campaigning for the vaccine to be made available to all boys

The transcript of this important event is now becominga available.

See picture for opening remarks.

Nic Williams (Fairplay for Women) comments:

"I represented @fairplaywomen at the Trans Equality Conference. I was shocked by the opening remarks telling us there would be no dissent, no challenges & 'transphobes' would be removed. An appalling hostile tone set by the chair...
Imagine what is was like to have these opening words in a conf full of reps from the NHS, university, government, big business, charity. These remarks were designed to intimidate & silence. It did not. We still stood up and spoke"

Nic Williams is a star.

Floorplan · 29/06/2018 07:12

This is very shocking. So now the powers that be are not even pretending they believe in debate. Didn't she say it was a debate though? But certain things aren't debatable. Confusing and frightening.

R0wantrees · 29/06/2018 07:20

Baroness Liz Barker's opening remarks as session chair are above.

Many here may remember the blog posted by Emma Heany (MN intern/ data breach).

I believe EH took down the blog and also made a statement expressing some regret.

However the blog along with its false claims that 'mumsnet are calling for a new section 28' have continued to be republished and quoted by some prominant TRAs, believed by some parliamentarians and absorbed as truth by many.

Emma Healey's blog is the document that the Baroness Barker is recommending, when she says, "Anyone trying to understand the campaign against review of the Gender Recognition Act should read this along"

The LibDemLGBT+ twitter account has continued to assert false allegations against 'Mumsnet / Mumsnetters':twitter.com/LGBTLD/status/986610149837164544

The debate seems to be on the best way to prioritize gender reassignment over the other eight protected categories in the EA.

LangCleg · 29/06/2018 08:19

So, Ollie Entwhistle, why do you protect your tweets?

Pratchet · 29/06/2018 09:25

And why has the neurosurgeon had all his answers redacted?

Pratchet · 29/06/2018 09:25

Or, a lot of them anyway.

Pratchet · 29/06/2018 09:26

Did you see Stephanie DA's tweet. Hang on.

Pratchet · 29/06/2018 09:29

I found this while looking. So many people tweeting about it! These things used to be held in secret. Fresh air is a great disinfectant.
