Next steps for transgender equality - inclusion, rights and services

There are some influential and interesting speakers at this conference which can be followed via twitter using #WSPFEvents.

The event is covering many of the issues discussed here including media, schools, prisons, health, policy & legislation etc

Nic Williams from Fairplay4women is amongst those tweeting: twitter.com/AskNic

Background:
"This timely seminar will consider policy priorities for transgender equality.

In the context of Brexit and uncertainty around the future of current equality legislation such as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, delegates will discuss the current landscape of transgender equality.

Attendees will also discuss priorities for transgender physical and mental health, in the context of Government proposals to streamline and de-medicalise the process for changing gender, the NHS England consultation on how Gender Identity Clinics will deliver specialised outpatient services and how surgical units will deliver surgical interventions, and reports that some transgender people are waiting over two years for an initial consultation with an NHS Gender Identity Clinic.

Further sessions focus on key issues for transgender equality in the workplace and how employers can support transition, tackling issues in the criminal justice system and how schools and universities can create inclusive environments, as well as transgender coverage and representation in the media."

'Conversations not in the media and on twitter, but inbroomscwith decidion makers'

I remember Nic W was the first to alert us here that the word 'women' had been stolen from women in Scotland without anyone knowing

In rooms with decision makers not brooms !

yes, shockingly, I think both woman & female!

"Like A Thief In The Night: The Scottish Bill That Stole The Word Woman
Law reforms Silencing women Women's rights

Last year while we were all looking the other way and distracted by the UK government’s proposals to reform the Gender Recognition Act the word woman was stolen from us. It was sneakily done by the Scottish parliament and hidden behind a smoke screen. That smoke screen was The Gender Representation on Public Boards Bill.

The Bill introduced the ‘gender representation objective’ – a target that women should make up 50% of non-executive board membership.

The purpose of this bill was admirable. It was to help women overcome the institutional sexism we suffer due to our sex. Positive action to redress the imbalances that have arisen from centuries of historical disadvantage. It was to acknowledge the reality that institutionalised inequality and sexist attitudes stop most women from reaching their full potential in public life. Financial barriers, income inequality, the gender pay gap, sexist attitudes, gender stereotyping, women’s disproportionate share of caring responsibilities, the undervaluing of women’s paid work, and media portrayals of women, to name but a few influences, all play a role in the sexism that prevents a fair number of women being involved in public life.

But in a cruel twist of irony it was also to be the perfect trojan horse to steal the very meaning of the words woman and female from us... (continues)

I remember seeing some celebration by a few active Twitter TRAs at the time and their implied hope (expectation?) that England & Wales would follow suit

We won't. That dream has long gone for them. Now they'll be happy to scrape a bit less GR 'bureaucracy' without payment in the form of the Equality Act exemptions being made mandatory.

Pretty sure that was Jess Stewart aka Scottish Women on twitter, not Nic, although she did write about it after Jess highlighted what had happened.

Pratchet · 01/07/2018 00:34

Thanks banana, I will look up Jess

Pratchet · 01/07/2018 00:59

Fairplay For Women open letter:
'Open letter to the BBC: Please uphold your duty for fairness and ensure women’s voices are heard'

Dear Tony Hall,
We are writing to ask you. as Director -General of the BBC, for reassurance that the BBC will uphold its responsibilities to provide balanced, fair coverage with regard to political and public debate about women’s rights in relation to transgender issues.

At the Westminster Social Policy Forum in June, a BBC executive revealed that the new BBC’s style guide for journalists is being revised to change the way BBC journalists approach transgender issues. These issues are receiving more and more coverage and the Government will be opening a public consultation on Gender Recognition Act on Tuesday 3rd July. This is now an urgent matter and the content of your style guide is of crucial importance.

We are writing to ask you to ensure that amid these developments, the updated BBC style guide ensures coverage is balanced and properly reflects the potential implications for women and their legal rights, and the concerns that many people feel about those implications.

We want to live in a world where transgender people can live freely and happily without discrimination. We also want our own rights and protections as women to remain workable.

To make sure that happens, we need to talk, as a nation, about some pretty big questions, such as:

At what point, if any, does society believe a man can actually become a woman?

How to we protect the group in society with female biology if society agrees ‘women’ no longer describes them exclusively?

The answers to these questions have unprecedented implications for women’s sex-based rights. If anyone can choose their sex based on how they feel, not biology, surgery or a medical diagnosis, rights women now take for granted become meaningless in law and practice.... (continues)

current thread discussing findings of BBC Staff sex survey:
From Mail on Sunday:

"The BBC has more than 400 transgender staff, a confidential internal survey has revealed.

The figure represents more than one in 50 of the workforce – about four times higher than the proportion in the population at large.

And it stunned the BBC executive behind the research, who described the total number of trans employees, at 417, as 'very, very high'.

Tunde Ogungbesan, the BBC's director of diversity, has now launched a major reform to make the Corporation more 'trans-friendly' following the findings." "

How many of these contributors are linked to Jess Bradley and groups like ATH?

And who did their due diligence before inviting these contributors to this event?

Anyone?

2016 Many TELI inaugural conference speakers are prominant TRA.

Some may have also been contributers to this forum though in the years in between may have worked together/ collaberated etc

TELI co-founded by Jess Bradley, Tara Hewitt, Michelle Brewer... ??

'Our inaugural conference last November launched TELI and took the form of a series of expert panels discussions on trans rights covering healthcare, justice and the impact of exclusionary provision, education and international protection. It was a very successful conference, enabling a forum for activists and lawyers to discuss how to progress the rights of the trans community.'
