What is now considered standard, or what is your experience/expectation when you see a Full Time office job advertised?

40 is full time surely?

Depends whether lunch breaks are counted in the hours. 37.5 sounds pretty standard. If 35 I'd definitely expect that not to include any breaks so in practice you'd be in the office 37.5 to 40 hours a week (assuming 30 min or 1 hr breaks respectively).

Where I work my working week is nominally 36 hours (7.25 hours a day, 7 on Friday). In practice most people work longer than that, and our contracts say 'a minimum of 36 hours a week'

I work for civil service and full time is 37 hours, which has been the same as in various other public sector orgs I've worked for over past decade. Am breaks unpaid, no overtime but can accrue and take every minute over 37hrs as toil.

However there was a mn thread a little while ago where posters absolutely refused to believe anyone working less than 40 hours was full time so 🤷‍♀️

I work full time, 35 hours a week plus an hour for lunch each day I’m technically not paid for, though it’s a salary so I don’t notice. I am at work 40 hours a week but I would say I work 35 hours. If I went part time I would be working out a pay reduction based on 35 hours not 40.

I've always had 37.5 plus 1 hour for unpaid lunch in mosts jobs ive had.

Most jobs have been 37.5 + 1 hour unpaid break. I'm lucky at the moment as full time is 35 hour week + 1 hour unpaid, public sector.

I do 32 hours + 1/2 hour lunch per day over four days, and the salary drop is less than 10%.

I find it very difficult to establish what a part time salary actually is when they quote it as as a pro rata of Full time equivalent.

I would say anything from 35-40 was standard full time; though over 30 is considered full rather than part time
for an office job I would expect a start time from 8am onwards and a finish no later than 6pm with an hour unpaid lunch break

I like the 35 hour week model (1 hour for lunch unpaid) so 9-5 I like to think that should be the norm. I feel really cheated if it is 9-5:30 just seems so wrong!

I work 37.5 but I still think 35 hours should be the standard. After all, there's a song about it (Working 9 to 5.)

It used to be 35 - working 9-5 with one hour for lunch.

Now we are unfortunately seeing that gradually going to 37.5 (8:30-5) or even 40 (8:30-5:30).

My husband and I own a financial services company and we employ 9 people - we began in 2004 with 39 hours moved to 37.5 and now run at 35 hours so 9.00-5.00 with 1 hr unpaid lunch. You will need to check I think as there are significant variations.

I'm 37 hours. It's 30min less on a Friday !
