Do you consider 35 or 37.5 hours per week to be standard in an office job?

What is now considered standard, or what is your experience/expectation when you see a Full Time office job advertised?

I’ve worked 35, 37.5 and 40. Full time at my current employer is 35 although I do less. I really noticed when I went from doing 35 to 40 once!
Does the job advert not say what full time is, or can you find another ad with the same employer that is full time and states what that means?

Fizzypoo · 07/11/2019 16:38

Part time is 18.5 in my place of work with a 30 minute lunch break included.

TheSecretJeven · 07/11/2019 16:39

My last local authority job was 35hrs, private sector was 37.5 hrs. I've also had a "fulltime" temp job at 30hrs a week Hmm.

CatToddlerUprising · 07/11/2019 16:40

Civil service new contract (past two years)- 8.35- 5.30 is full time. Anything under is part time.

TheSecretJeven · 07/11/2019 16:40

Should say that my 30hr job didn't involve a lunch break which is legal but hard going. The others had 30 to 60min break.

Youngatheart00 · 07/11/2019 16:41

9-5 with an hour for lunch (unpaid) equals 35 hours per week.

EnFinale · 07/11/2019 16:42

Shouldn't you get a break after four hours' work, @TheSecretJeven?

EnFinale · 07/11/2019 16:43

Oh in fact it's every six hours, not four. So that doesn't sound legal @TheSecretJeven

EnFinale · 07/11/2019 16:43

Oh god it is actually!! I need more coffee....

HappyDinosaur · 07/11/2019 16:44

I'd expect either 37.5 or 40. 35 would seem a shorter week.

Hoolahoophop · 07/11/2019 16:46

In the office I work lunch is unpaid. We are contracted to 40 hours a week. So usually work 8.30 to 5 and take a 30 min lunch break.

TheSecretJeven · 07/11/2019 16:49

@enfinale yup its perfectly legal. Just hard going. I had the post lunch slump without any lunch Confused.

20viona · 07/11/2019 16:51

35 hours is full time at my nhs trust. Not sure about an office job.

Smidge001 · 07/11/2019 16:53

37.5.

FiercyMacFierceFace · 07/11/2019 16:53

Work back office in a bank - 35 hours considered working week. Core hours of 10-12 and 2-4, how you make up your working day/ week around that is up to you (unless there’s operational demands, which is a rare occurrence).

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 07/11/2019 16:53

Our work place says full time is 35 hours so 9-5 with an hour for lunch or something similar.

StarlingsInSummer · 07/11/2019 16:55

We do 36.25 hrs in our office, but DH does 40.

megletthesecond · 07/11/2019 16:56

35 with an unpaid hour for lunch.

ZenNudist · 07/11/2019 16:57

37.5 hours with unpaid lunches / overtime.

OneFootintheRave · 07/11/2019 16:58

40 for me.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 07/11/2019 16:58

37.5 or 40; I don't think many jobs are 35 hours anymore.

MesmorisedByTheLights · 07/11/2019 17:04

I would say 9-5 Mon-Fri. It depends if breaks and counted and how long you get (a hour or half an hour). So. it varies by location, but generally it would be between those hours, and between 35-40 hours.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/11/2019 17:06

37.5 on average

Buyitinbamboo · 07/11/2019 17:07

When looking at part time jobs I always just worked it out on 40 hours then I wasn't disappointed

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/11/2019 17:08

Mine is a charity and my official hours are 8am-4pm with half hour lunch.
