Graham Linehan on Jon Ronson's new book

My ex-friend Jon Ronson may be a case study in the corrupting toxicity of trans ideology. An interesting read.

His book chapter about me stands as an indictment of him and the cowardly social class of people who refuse to confront uncomfortable truths

Asking someone to use their own words to expand on what they feel the meaning is of a particular term or why they introduced a particular (apparently unrelated) topic isn’t silencing. I’m still no clearer about what the relevance to GL is of Israel paying influencers to visit or their status as ‘pro-Israel but not necessarily Zionist’.

Edited

Thank you. I “used my own words”, across several posts. Thus, Ive been accused of derailing. I won’t be bothering to use my own words further, particularly as I sense whatever I words I use they won’t be the right ones, unless I say “Graham is amazing” or some such.

Oy vey

you may wish to mull over why being asked to be clear about your views and assumptions upsets you quite this much

Oh come off it. In relation to Israel/Palestine you said

"I don’t know if he actually believes this or is folllowing a party line of some sort, just as many conservative would-be ‘influencers’ are. Some have been paid by Israel to say certain things. (Not suggesting this of Glinner to be clear, and of course, the same could be said of the other side)."

You introduced the subject of people being paid to support Israel while saying that of course you weren't saying GL was. Which begged the question "then why mention it?" This isn't about calling him "amazing" - and indeed many PPs have expressed reservations about aspects of how he operates. It's about trying to make coy insinuations while claiming not to be making them at all.

Bernard asked if I support a non-Jewish/secular Israel. I answered her questIon.

There’s another poster here who also says her DH is Jewish. Did you ask her the same question?

The other person who claimed to have a Jewish husband did so purely to point out the absurdity of your position, which in your own words is "no, I don’t have a problem with Israel. My husband is Jewish."

Perhaps the point you were trying to make is that not only are some of your best friends Jewish, but you are so well disposed towards the Jews you were kind enough to marry one of them. Well, so what? Are you asking us to acknowledge you took one for the team? Should we honour your bravery? Do you hope it insulates you from criticism by others? It's really not clear. What should we infer from this fact?

Honestly, why the need to type all that out?

I’m married to someone with Jewish heritage. These things affect us and our children. I don’t feel a need to confess to you my thoughts and opinions about Israel, especially as that isn’t even relevant. Is that enough for you?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 01/09/2026 12:54

I think my irony meter just exploded

we’re not addressing the coy insinuations thing by the looks of things

MyAmpleSheep · 01/09/2026 13:19

@Mikatdo

Hilarious.

I have never asked you about your thoughts about Israel. I don't really care what they are, but you chose to bring the Middle East into this thread about GL and then waved your husband's faith (and now your children's heritage) as an amulet to shut people up.

"These things affect us and our children" might have been a good reason not to have a go at the majority of this thread throwing down the I don’t see how so many feminists can line up , one after the other, on this thread to defend such a person gauntlet.

Having done so, you cannot possibly be surprised that others are going to respond to it and the points about the Middle East that you chose to make.

It is hilarious! The lengths you’ll go to to defend the odious Graham Linehan, and the time you’ll spend arguing with other women about - nothing, really.

Beowulfa · 01/09/2026 13:43

Lineham can definitely be spiky, aggressive and bull-in-china-shop persistent. This has turned out to be very helpful for those who prefer to avoid awkward but pertinent questions like "is Eddie Izzard the same sex as your mother?"

I have gone to absolutely no lengths at all to defend Graham Linehan, on any topic whatsoever. I do spend a lot of time reading what you and other people write about him, and other topics, and I'm not shy about asking people (including you) to explain what they mean when what they say isn't clear.

I'm still not sure why you mentioned your husband's faith or children's heritage. Do you want to have another try at explaining?

GL is not odious, and I would go to great lengths to defend him from such defamation, it's no skin of my nose to put people straight when they lie, even if they are 'other women'.

Everytime someone wants to make a valid point they undermine themselves by quoting the.

Reem Alsalem is accountable to the UN and like it or not the UN says any report under their name has to have been investigated by them.

So for the 900 and 99 time, Netanyahu in his campaign against the UN denied them the right to enter Israel and conduct an investigation.

At a later date an independent report put together by women in Israel, many of whom worked as part of rape crisis support, was endorsed by the UN.

I have no idea why nearly every thread about just about anything finishes us with someone making an inaccurate and inflamatory remark about a woman who has stood up for women's rights.

But well done for dumbing down a FWR thread.

She didn't have to say that there was no evidence of rape. I'd say that was taking a position even if she was pissed off the Israelis wouldn't let investigators in.

It's a real indictment of the paucity of trans arguments, that they resort to well how many years was it before the close of the lesbian Mitchfest and the horrific murder of a lesbian family by the same man who disagreed with it.

And they get it wrong by about nine years.

Seriously, if you're trying to win an argument because of these totally irrelevant details, you've already lost it.

I am not a Trans Rights Activist. I believe that women have a right to single-sex spaces that don't include transwomen. I wrote my post in defence of Jon Ronson.

Graham Linehan accused Jon Ronson of ignoring important facts to do with Michfest. Linehan wants people to believe that the three people who were murdered were murdered because of their beliefs, beliefs that the murderer found unacceptable.

Ann Widdecombe was murdered by a man who didn't know her and who travelled across country to get to her. He murdered her because he couldn't accept her political beliefs.

In the case of Dana Rivers, he knew the women he murdered socially. They lived in the same vicinity. They were members of the same motorcycle club. We will probably never know the full reason why Dana Rivers committed the murders, someone who is obviously mentally ill doesn't need a reason, but as far as we can tell it was because he was an enforcer in the club and he believed that they had transgressed some rule.

Jon Ronson was quite right not to mention these murders in the context of Michfest. It's possible that he was not aware of these murders, there are a lot of murders in America, you can't keep track of all of them.

Graham Linehan obviously feels that if you are not with him then you are against him. If you don't go along with what he says then you are the enemy. If you criticise him then you must be TRA. Even if the criticism is that you've got your facts wrong.

There might well be details that Graham Linehan got wrong.
And some people might get caught up in that.

Personally, I see so many arguments turning into gleeful gotchas over the smallest of details that are irrelevant to the actual premise.

i'm not suggesting that's you, I'm just pointing out I don't attach much importance to it.

Glinner just published the complete email exchanges with Ronson in his Substack newsletter.

Jon Ronson, 19 May, 11:59am — “A proposal”
Hey Graham,
I hope you’re well. I’ve got a proposal that I really hope you’ll be into. I’m working on a new BBC Radio 4 series about the history of the culture wars, and the people caught up in them. The series will begin in the 1970s and end today. I interview people involved in pivotal, extraordinary culture war moments during those decades. We inevitably talk about the issues, but mostly the aim is to tell human stories - nuanced, twisty-turny, emotional at times, hopefully relatable.
I’d really like to try and make one of the later episodes about you. I think it would be a great opportunity for people to hear you tell your story with plenty of space to tell it. But for it to work, you would need to be prepared to talk about your own personal journey - how you got to the place you are now. As I say, the issues will inevitably come into it, but the main aim is the personal, human story.
What do you think?? And please do keep this confidential!
Best
Jon

Graham, 19 May, 1:35pm
Dear Jon,
Don’t worry, I will keep this confidential.
I’m sorry but the fact that you were unable or unwilling to say that the ‘lesbians’ in the photos I sent you were men makes me think you’re not interested in covering this debate truthfully. If you insist on pretending you can’t tell the difference between men and women, I don’t see how you can possibly be an honest broker here.
I’ll pass, thank you. Try Julie Bindel. She has been fighting this crap for fifteen years.
Good luck with it.
Graham

Jon, 19 May, 2:02pm
Hey Graham,
Thanks for this. And nice to hear from you. I don’t think you quite understand my position though, and I’m sure I didn’t make it clear. On principle a journalist doesn’t / can’t accede to prior demands from an interviewee. “You can only interview me if I have you on record saying this…” It undermines the rules of journalism. I literally couldn’t agree, and no journalist worth their salt could. In the same way, we cannot ever pay people for interviews. You were inadvertently asking me to break rules. I can explain more if you like.
Given that this will be a high profile chance for people to hear from you, and you know that my work is never about trying to make people look bad or put people in difficult oppositional situations (I still admire the stance you took on that on the Today programme) will you at least take a day or so to think about it?
Best
Jon

Graham, 19 May, 2:08pm
Tell yourself whatever you want, Jon, but pretending you can’t tell the difference between men and women for ideological reasons is not a good starting point for someone covering this issue. I’ll pass.

Jon, 19 May, 2:17pm
Well I don’t get it - you were really angry when Katie Herzog and Jesse Singal wouldn’t have you on. And by the way I’m not telling myself whatever I want. We are not allowed to accede to demands like that in order to get access. Imagine if you were writing a comedy and you had to agree in writing in advance to certain purity tests. You would rightly feel agreeing to do so would undermine your integrity.
Well, I’m here if you change your mind, and my offer stands!
Jon

Graham, 19 May, 4:19pm
This will be edited. If you want to have a live discussion, which is how I presumed Jesse and Katie would do it, I’d consider that. And I still say that asking you to confirm that you believe in biological reality is not the ethical breach you’re claiming. Most people who haven’t placed a bet on this ludicrous ideology would have no problem answering. They’re obviously men, Jon. Think of what kind of journalism you’re practising by pretending you don’t know that.

Jon, 19 May, 6:45pm
Honestly, Graham, no reputable journalist who isn’t also an activist could ever agree in advance to state for the record the interviewee’s ideological position as a prerequisite to access. It’s unheard of. It breaks every rule of journalism.
It isn’t a live show. Actually, Katie and Jesse Singal’s show isn’t live either. What I can promise is an earnest, curious, humanistic attempt to understand why your life took the course it has. It would hopefully be intelligent and sensitive. My show is endeavoring to not be a part of the culture wars, and while I would of course - during any sections where we discuss the issues - have to challenge and question your position, I wouldn’t be coming at you as an antagonist. Just someone trying to understand… As I say, I would really like the interview to be as cordial as possible...

Graham, 19 May, 6:54pm
Sorry, Jon, my base requirement for a journalist is that he believes in biological reality. If I talk to you, then I have to start talking to historical revisionists etc.

Jon, 19 May, 6:57pm
Well if you ever want to screw over a journalist, just tell the world that they took and passed your required purity test!!

Graham, 19 May, 7:37pm
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. I’ll keep a record of all journalists who fly into a panic upon being asked about the birds and the bees. If it’s more than just Jesse and Katie, I’ll reconsider the interview.

Jon, 20 May, 9:41am
I don’t know what you mean by “If it’s more than just Jesse and Katie, I’ll reconsider the interview.” I’m not interviewing Jesse and Katie.

Graham, 20 May, 4:11pm
let’s forget it Jon. Again, try Julie Bindel. She’s been fighting it for around 15 years and I’d love to see her reaction when you tell her you can’t tell the difference between a lesbian and a man.
Bye.
G

Jon, 20 May, 4:13pm
Thanks graham. You know, you can’t go through life forcing people to pay fealty to you. I say this as a (sort of) friend.

Graham, 20 May, 4:25pm
Here’s a prediction. I’ll be freely talking about this period in a few years while you’ll pretend you were on an extended holiday. Fealty to me. You’re a journalist. How about fealty to the truth? I won’t speak to any journalist who pretends to believe that Eddie Izzard is the same sex as his mum. How can you live with yourself?

Jon, 20 May, 4:28pm
There’s a lot I can say to this, but what I will say is: I’m sorry your wound is so deep that you can’t find a way to heal and resume a more varied life. I hope you find a way. You can still be as GC as you like, but it will be a hell of a lot better for you and for everyone if you manage it.

Jon, 20 May, 4:30pm (follow-up)
Oh, PS, the last time you said you didn’t know how I can live with myself and look my wife in the eye it was a funny misunderstanding! I was talking about Phoenix Jones!

Graham, 20 May, 4:37pm
My God do you have any idea what they’re doing to children? Fuck off, Jon.

Jon, 20 May, 5:53pm
Speaking of children, as soon as I told you I felt you were acting like a bully, a bunch of your fellow travelers started tweeting that I was a pedophile. Nice company, Graham. Nice way to get people on your side. And, by the way, if you start accusing people who aren’t pedophiles of being pedophiles you devalue the term, and I’m not sure that’s a very good idea.

Graham, 20 May, 6:15pm
Yeah imagine if we started muddying the meanings of words. From the bloke who thinks ‘women’ means ‘women and some men’.
And grooming is the perfect word for this. Look at you, FFS. They’re men, Jon. In the photos. It’s genuinely frightening that you can’t say that.
And listen, we can keep going back and forth, but anything beyond this email goes outside our confidentiality agreement. I’d be happy to continue this discussion in public, otherwise, I want to stop hearing from you.

Jon, 20 May, 7:08pm
Ok, fair enough. I apologize for being a little snippy and you won’t hear from me again. I really do wish you well.
Jon

Crikey, I don't think Graham could've been clearer. Personally, if I'd been Ronson I would just have said okay, no worries, after the initial 'no' and left it at that. He was like a dog with a bone.

And what's this about journalists not being able to recognise reality? They might want to have a word with Janice Turner, James Kirkup, Nick Wallace, Sarah Ditum - I mean the list is endless.

If I was getting emails like that, with all the little digs, there's no way I'd think Ronson would be neutral.

Plus how do people really think it comes across when they say I feel sorry for you, your wound is deep, you're so hurt, you might want to get help for that, type of comment?

Patronising as shit doesn't remotely cover it.

MyAmpleSheep · 03/09/2026 13:27

I agree; GL dodged a bullet there. But a simple “no, thanks” would have done.

It doesn’t tell us much new about GL but I did learn something about Ronson.

It's just as well GL continued the emails , he's saved the receipts of John Ronsons failure to be a proper journalist .

Lovelyview · 03/09/2026 13:59

Well I know who came out of that exchange with my respect and it wasn't Jon Ronson. GL was absolutely right, in a pre-recorded interview in which Jon Ronson was clearly trying to 'both sides' biology he would have stitched Graham up by selecting some of his more pithy statements about groomers while leaving out the explanation about why teaching children they can be born in the wrong body is grooming them with an insane and harmful ideology. Does anyone know if Jon Ronson did approach Julie Bindel?

UtopiaPlanitia · 03/09/2026 14:49

"and you know that my work is never about trying to make people look bad or put people in difficult oppositional situations "

Yeah, Mr Ronson, your latest book really demonstrates this point about you wonderfully well. /sarcasm

lcakethereforeIam · 03/09/2026 16:08

Reminds me of something...a thread a few months ago, a qualified man dismissed because of perceived lack of neutrality. It's annoying me. I can't quite remember. There were discussions about what was neutrality in this. Starting from a point of believing that men can be women is not, imo, neutrality.

Glinner caught the inconsistency when Ronson complaining about being accused of paedophila (an appalling accusation btw), devaluing the word, whilst he seemed to be fine about women being stripped of any words to describe ourselves.

Shedmistress · 03/09/2026 16:11
