Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I don't believe it goes anywhere near far enough personally

OP posts:

Still feels lacking to me.

Too little, too late. The damage to Amnesty's already shonky reputation cannot be undone

Iheartmysmart · Today 10:40

Sounds like Amnesty are more sorry they got pulled up on the article than they are about publishing it in the first place.

SodThisHeadache · Today 10:42

The briefing was publicised so that part's a lie - at least two podcasts in which the author proudly sold it. One The Guilt Feminist, which I imagine has a large audience. Taking down the article is not sufficient.

Retiredfromthere · Today 10:49

'This document should never have been published, and full responsibility for this error rests with Amnesty International UK.'

So this is Amnesty International throwing their unruly offspring AIUK under the bus? A don't sue us sue them move?

nauticant · Today 10:50

It's not possible for the apology to be enough because Amnesty International doesn't mean it in the way that it matters. They believe gender critical people are hateful bigots and it's the duty of right thinkers like themselves to share this whenever they have the chance.

Amnesty International believes that they've done nothing wrong and the most they can offer is "is this enough to make you go away?"

Retiredfromthere · Today 10:54

It was AIUK who intervened against FWS in the Supreme Court case.
This is coming across as a trend.

  1. Lose a court case vs Gender Critical opponents
  2. Do academic(ish) research on this topic in order to publish and malign GCs and specifically whoever you lost to.

Not only research staff at AIUK but also - it seems from another recent thread on this board - at The Open University following this route to 'redemption'.

Still feels lacking to me.

Yes its lacking an explanation of why their PR/media department issued a press statement doubling down on the article in the 1st couple of days after they published the 2nd report, especially since they now claim not to believe what either report said about womens rights groups.
They can claim that they support women's rights but all evidence shows the opposite to be true

HermioneWeasley · Today 11:10

It’s the bare minimum they had to say legally. They still think women who won’t strip in front of men are big ol bigots.

MashaPav · Today 11:11

forced to apologise because lack of anti slapp laws.

lcakethereforeIam · Today 11:13

Damage limitation. I don't believe the organisations libelled are the audience this is intended for. It aimed at doing just enough to mitigate court cases and sanctions from the Charity Commission. There's probably fellow feeling in both Stonewalled courts and the CC that they can use this to handwave it all away.

Forced to apologise because full of shit you mean

This has absolutely nothing to do with SLAPP lawsuits. Amnesty defamed, slandered and liabled dozens of grassroots womens and gay rights groups and are now being rightly held to account for it, hence they reported themselves to the charity commission and said commission is now investigating them.
Investigations triggered by the sort of behaviour that Amnesty self reported for can lead to the charity being stripped of its charitable status. This statement is all about trying to prevent the charity from being struck off the charitable register.

BiologicalRobot · Today 11:23

We apologise for the publication of the briefing “A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK.” This document should never have been published,

So what was the plan with the document? You don't make a huge list of organisations unless you plan to DO something with it.

Whilst we do not share the views of all these organisations,
They don't agree with women's rights??

SqueakyDinosaur · Today 11:25

IIRC that doesn't even start to address the list of demands from JKR's /Beira's Place's lawyers in their initial letter. Game still very much on, I would think.

MrsOvertonsWindow · Today 11:29

It's a start isn't it?
".. we recognise the concerns raised by those labelled as “anti-rights” in the document. To be clear: this labelling does not represent our institutional position, and we apologise for its inclusion. In particular, we apologise to Beira’s Place and other groups, which we categorised as gender critical organisations, which we should not have collectively labelled as anti-rights.

I recall certain Christian organisations were included in their shopping list of anti rights groups so there's no apology to them? Interesting to see what happens next.

SirChenjins · Today 11:36

It's a very small step - but I suppose ultimately it's up to the lawyer's of the organisations they went after as to whether it's sufficient.

Wishesandhorses · Today 11:38

Oh that's very grudging and the subtext between those lines is easily read. I don't think that's going to save them; this is basically 'we're right but we should have phrased it a lot more carefully'.

SchadenFreude8 · Today 11:49

JKR posted on X this quote from Iseult White, granddaughter of Amnesty founder. I watched Iseult in convo with Menno on his YT channel a few days ago.

Amnesty apologises - "An Apology for A Growing Threat briefing, published on 8 July 2026" apology published 31st July 2026
originaltotaks · Today 11:51

Let me guess - women were cancelling their regular donations/direct debits and so Amnesty is now in crisis mode.

Underpinned by so much male anger. Blokes really don't like being told no, do they?

In addition to all the great points made by PPs, I found
The briefing was taken down within 48 hours of publication, as soon as management were notified of its existence
interesting as a window into how 'management' at AI operates.

48 hours before 'management' knew about something that the entire online world could read because it was on their website?
And management had to be 'notified', they didn't..... like...um... look at their own website??

As a PP pointed out, the actual publication of the briefing is only the thick end of the wedge - does AI stand by committing all the work-hours which must have gone into researching and collating all that data on 'anti-rights' groups?

Are they just annoyed that for 48 hours the world could see what they had been up to?
