Freedom of speech for me, but not for thee.
Transphobic individuals can incite violence on innocent people or preach hate and it’s not against the law but when someone else expresses their free speech it’s against the law.

Any incitement of violence is against the law. I think “preaching hate” is less clear as that’s so subjective.

Is a TRA calling a gender critical person “transphobic “ hate speech or their belief and under freedom of speech? Is a gender critical person calling a Transwoman a “man “ hate speech or biological fact?

Theres a lot of gender critical people on here who have defended Herbert’s right to make the comments he made about Widdecombe. Until it’s clearer which comments he’s in trouble for it’s hard to say much more. It does however look like he’s previously made comments which are much more clearly incitement of violence.

What are you referring to?

Hopefully he'll go to prison, like that women did, can't remember her name but she was a councillors wife and put hateful remarks on her facebook page about migrants.

I don't think she should have gone to prison either. Punished, sure, a suspended sentence, but it seemed de trop.

Oopsie Silly!

You seem to have completely and totally definitely by accident got that the wrong way round!

There's been a lot of that the last few days....

And apparently they stink like an unclean bellybutton if you don’t clean it out properly as it has no natural lubrication. 🤮

That is more than a bit grim.

She did technically incite violence when saying to burn an immigrant hostel down didn’t she? On a weekend when people were burning hostels down? She might not have meant for anyone to actually do it but she said it so where do you draw the line?

That is very unpleasant and doesn't bear thinking about ☹️

Quite apart from trans / freedom of speech / Ann Widdecombe etc, etc… The online world really is a terrible reflection on society.

Sex realist

murasaki · Today 20:18

Masha, for once, a lot of us are on the same side as you re free speech. So you are getting irate misguidedly.

If, however, there are other things at play here, then the arrest and charge are fine we just don't know.

TheDogsMother · Today 20:20

Well if there is a sentence I hope he realises he will be going to man jail not lady jail.

Rightsraptor · Today 20:20

Herbert isn't 'young' at 50, nor is he a 'woman' as he's a man. Let's stop with the lies.

We are, we’re critical of the whole regressive framework of gender, a social construct based on outdated sex role stereotypes. Hence “gender critical”. You’re welcome.

Rightsraptor · Today 20:22

An ideology is set of beliefs. Some misguided individuals believe humans can change sex. How it it not an ideology? It's not fact.

Lucy Connolly?

janeszebra · Today 20:23

I just think there must be much more to this that will come out in due course. What he said was abhorrent, but like many on this thread, not sure it is in criminal territory. Good on the FSU..

Toxicor · Today 20:25

Good. I’m glad they’ve been charged but sadly I think the damage to the University’s reputation has been done.

murasaki · Today 20:25

The fact that Ann would have approved of the FSU offering to support him must enrage him.

MashaPav · Today 20:27

Gowlett · Today 18:09

Poetic justice for Ann.

Indeed.

Masha

You are so keen to score points against GC people but all you’ve scored is an own goal.

Most of us found his tweets objectionable not because of his identity but because of the nastiness of them. My only thought was the mask has slipped and now you’ve shown the world just how unpleasant you are. It showed the double edged nature of free speech- he was free to make those comments and I am equally free to judge his character based on them.

As Maya Angelou said “When somebody shows you who they are believe them…”

Rightsraptor · Today 20:33

A phobia is an irrational fear of something.

It's perfectly rational for a woman to be fearful of a man who has entered a place where he shouldn't be. In fact, it would be irrational of her not to be frightened at all.
