New thread. You know the deal - women's pub, men to the Staunch Ally next door.

Some of us are currently on the trail of an international seed smuggling ring, just for background information.

Gerbils and the World Cup - brilliant, @MyrtleLion!

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/06/2026 21:32

Is the football stage really that important?

I have no idea.

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/06/2026 21:43

The crafters are getting into the spirit of the World Cup. All previous projects are temporarily set aside to make football tops for the gerbils.

Somehow I don’t think it will matter that they’re all different colours.

I don’t think I care enough about it to hate it.

I’m theoretically pleased by the rise in women’s football but not enough to actually watch it.

Yes i agree with the rise of women……..but i still dislike it, not my thing.

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/06/2026 22:04

I went to the women’s team parade because I was in central London that day & was very pleased they’d won, but I’d never actually watch a match.

As @ErrolTheDragon says though, gerbils otoh….

“Football” is likely to be a flexible concept. They are gerbils, after all.

DauntlessDamson · 06/06/2026 22:31

I declared myself to be a football-free zone years ago and offer sanctuary to refugees from the game........

But I'll make an exception for the gerbils⚽😁

They have very short legs just like toddlers. My small grand hogs (all boys) kick a ball quite randomly and declare goal. Without any such thing occurring

I love that, Kitty, and such inspiring mottos around the roomSmile
I love your imperious look in the group photo -
craftwork? moi? I am an Empress, not an artisan, but give me some of that needlework and I'll hold it for the photo - which way up should I hold it please?
😁

I hate football

I think I'm in a minority here, but I enjoy watching footy on the telly, I find it relaxing - as long as as it's something like Gibraltar v the Cayman Islands [that was an actual match today!] and not Ireland v anybody.
Since our men's team didn't make it to the World Cup, I can watch any of it with equanimity - thanks for that. boys😏

I like the skills in football, like being able to run at full tilt while very gently and
deftly guiding a ball in the direction you want it to go, and keeping possession of it, without stepping on it and twisting your ankle. It's like patting your head a rubbing your tummy while running very fast and having 10 people trying to stop you..

With all the politicking going on around it, this World Cup has to be the least anticipated-with-excitement one in living memory.

I'll watch random matches if they're on when I'm having a cuppa in front of the telly. I'm far from being a 'fan'.

But the Gerbil World Cup will be very exciting, I can't wait!
I'm really really looking forward to the spectacular opening ceremony😁

When I went to Kew Gardens a few years ago I had a great time crawling round the giant badger sett. I think it was mainly meant for kids but I’d taken a random day off work & it was quiet.

And about 10 years ago there was an adult bouncy castle on the South Bank which was brilliant fun. Although I’m not sure my pelvic floor would stand it nowadays 🙄

I took my son to that! We travelled down from Yorkshire for the weekend and I had a whole itinerary. I think the bouncy castle was to link with the promotion of a Candy Crush game or similar. I didn't go on it because my knees were already shot but he had a great time. (He was about 17 and it was for over 16s)

I also took him to a gaming bar where he could play viseo games and I could read my book and ignore it all. He accidentally picked a two player fighting game So I read my book while hammering on one button only and he played properly... we ended up with 8 or 9 Japanese lads watching this because I was still reading (Georgette Heyer, The Unknown Ajax) and was actually winning each bout.

It was hilarious. He still talks about it now.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/06/2026 23:50

The Infinite Tea pot in that picture is a good innovation. It should avoid power surges caused by everyone switching on their kettles at half time.

PastaAllaNorma · 06/06/2026 23:52

Hedgehogforshort · 06/06/2026 21:50

I hate football

I do too. It's the stupid rolling around play-acting for a foul that I hate. It's insulting. Rugby has Blood Substitutes for a player who's going off to have a gash glued closed, ffs. Male football players collapse when someone runs past them in the penalty box in the hopes of a ref calling foul.

How can you like such a deceitful sport? There's no respect for the rules of the ref. It's tawdry. Like the orchestrated wrestling matches - all show and not purity of heart.

PastaAllaNorma · 06/06/2026 23:54

I dunno, Marie - what about the one in the stadia built by modern slaves with the absurdly high death toll?

I love this! I was 13 when I encountered my first bouncy castle and too old, so I’ve never been on one.

But I have this wonderful vision of you just hammering this button and beating your son at the game while reading Georgette Heyer 😂

ChatGPT didn’t completely understand the prompt… So I made it regenerate the image…

My DS2 in NJ has been given tickets for a World Cup game for him and his brother as a 40th birthday present by his very wealthy BIL. He doesn’t know about it yet - his birthday is the day before the match - and I’m looking forward to seeing his face when he finds out!

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/06/2026 05:28

My favourite Georgette Heyer is Cotillion. Everyone goes on about how wonderful Freddy is but Kitty Charing is the Heyer heroine I’d most like to be friends with.

I updated a picture you did a few threads back, @MyrtleLion , so I can’t take credit for the mottos or the Infinite Tea idea, but I love them too. And Empressaurus’s most artisanal crochet project is halfway up the top row of cats 😀

I'm ok, thanks. It's everyone else that needs propping up, and that's tiring. Although not their fault.

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/06/2026 11:39

That sounds tough, @FuzzyPuffling. Good thing you can come & relax in the Bluestocking.
