New thread. You know the deal - women's pub, men to the Staunch Ally next door.

Some of us are currently on the trail of an international seed smuggling ring, just for background information.

I wondered what was going on, Fuzzy, and I'm sorry that life has been difficultFlowers
You've come to the right place, just enjoy your drink ['Bargerbil - over here please!] and the hugs [Rosie! Quokkas! You're needed over here! It's OK Harriet, Fuzzy understands that you're a bit small for hugging, but she knows that you care]

this World Cup has to be the least anticipated-with-excitement one in living memory

I dunno, Marie - what about the one in the stadia built by modern slaves with the absurdly high death toll?

Fair point, Pasta - I meant 'least anticipated-with-excitement ' by yer actual footie fans, the kind who weren't bothered about the atrocious working conditions in ..Qatar, was it?

Even they seem unimpressed with this World Cup.

Chickadeeinme · 07/06/2026 12:17

I will raise my hand as another Georgette Heyer fan here. I don’t think I have a favourite heroine, though I certainly appreciate both Frederica (I recently re-read that one) and Kitty, but I think Sophy was the first one I loved.

MyrtleLion · 07/06/2026 12:24

I bought a cheap candle in Aldi last week and was very disappointed. The wick is too thin so it started to tunnel - burn leaving wax on the sides - and the scent was very weak.

This morning I came into the living room to discover I had left it burning all night (ADHD) but the room smelt heavenly and most of the wax left round the sides had melted.

I do not recommend this, obviously a fire risk, but a nice surprise.

Good afternoon. My name is Magpiecomplex, and I'm a Lego addict.

I've just pre-ordered the new Sagrada Familia set. I can see that one being out of stock almost permanently, and didn't want to risk it.

Ohhhh wow, @Magpiecomplex - that kit is amazing. I occasionally yearn for the Notre Dame kit but I don’t know where I’d put it, so I resist temptation.

Chickadeeinme · 07/06/2026 12:54

Wow indeed! That’s spectacular.

It's £649. That's nearly £650. For Lego!!!!
My mind is blown. 😮

I hope it's life sized.

'Tis true, it's not cheap, but that's going to be most of a year of stress relief, if not more, so it averages out.

I took my son to that! We travelled down from Yorkshire for the weekend and I had a whole itinerary. I think the bouncy castle was to link with the promotion of a Candy Crush game or similar. I didn't go on it because my knees were already shot but he had a great time. (He was about 17 and it was for over 16s)

I also took him to a gaming bar where he could play viseo games and I could read my book and ignore it all. He accidentally picked a two player fighting game So I read my book while hammering on one button only and he played properly... we ended up with 8 or 9 Japanese lads watching this because I was still reading (Georgette Heyer, The Unknown Ajax) and was actually winning each bout.

It was hilarious. He still talks about it now.

Our neighbours are having a party today - they have an inflatable obstacle course that stretches all the way down their driveway and out onto the circus (we live in a cul de sac), and it is now full of pre-teen boys having an amazing time.

They did warn us in advance about this - and said we could have a go if we wanted, but I have decided I am way too old!

Chickadeeinme · 07/06/2026 13:16

One of those adult bouncy castles showed up next to us yesterday - graduation party for their 18 year old son who is heading off to college in September. We’ll miss him - he’s a really nice (and very good-looking) boy who we pay to cut our grass, and he does a good job cheerfully. Luckily there are other teenagers in the neighbourhood!

Talking of fire risks, my smoke alarm went off this morning as I was taking a shower!

So there I was, wrapped in a towel, with wet hair and jumping up and down in the hall with a wooden spoon from the kitchen, trying to press the "off" button.

Don't know what set it off - it could have been the steam from the bathroom, but it's never done that before.

Just as well none of my neighbours' windows overlook my hallGrin

P.S. I don't know how any of you could pass up a go on an adult bouncy castle. I'd have to do it, even if I only managed to walk across the thing instead of bouncing!

DauntlessDamson · 07/06/2026 13:35

@MarieDeGournay I like the skills in football, like being able to run at full tilt while very gently and deftly guiding a ball in the direction you want it to go, and keeping possession of it, without stepping on it and twisting your ankle. It's like patting your head a rubbing your tummy while running very fast and having 10 people trying to stop you.

That sounds suspiciously like multi-tasking Marie. I read somewhere recently that a project - at Brunel University I think - had concluded that, contrary to popular belief, men are as able as women to multi-task, though only up to a point. They can't do it while having a conversation at the same time. It was suggested that this is the reason men just grunt if someone talks to them when they are busy.

I couldn't possibly comment.😁

My favourite Georgette Heyer is Cotillion. Everyone goes on about how wonderful Freddy is but Kitty Charing is the Heyer heroine I’d most like to be friends with.

I updated a picture you did a few threads back, @MyrtleLion , so I can’t take credit for the mottos or the Infinite Tea idea, but I love them too. And Empressaurus’s most artisanal crochet project is halfway up the top row of cats 😀

For me, Kitty and Freddy are great but the absolute hero of the book I'd marry in a heartbeat is Freddy's father, Lord Legerdown. He is a delight.

My granny's expression of shock - 'Jesus, Mary and holy St Joseph!' - was never more apt!

But I hope you get hours of enjoyment out of it, Magpie, and you have 150 years to get it finishedSmile

Having enviously watched a neighbour using one of those mini-JCBs in their garden, it occurred to me that I'd pay good money for entry to a theme-park where grown-ups got the chance to drive diggers and dumpers and all things black and yellow😄

And big cranes, really big cranes. And cement lorries. I'd pay to do that as long as someone else is tidying up after me. Do we have Repair Gerbils?

MarieDeGournay · 07/06/2026 16:07

Oh wow - why oh why oh why did I leave England? I'd have cancelled all plans to retire home if I'd known about DIGGERLAND😕
It looks brill. In a parallel universe, I am organising a Bluestocking Day Out😁

My MN name long before this one was GrimmaTheNome - the heroine of Diggers so I guess I should be up for driving a JCB. Possibly one overflowing with gerbils rather than nomes

The character with the most hidden depths is Miss Fishguard!

Actually I’d love to read the book from her viewpoint.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/06/2026 16:37

I think I read a Georgette Heyer book once, and enjoyed it but no idea which it was.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/06/2026 16:44

This prompts me to wonder why I never seem to be able to settle down to read nowadays except if I’m on a plane or train or sometimes on holiday. I’m sitting in the kitchen idly MNing or doing a sudoku while periodically checking if it’s stopped raining (I got halfway through some gardening yesterday but every time I think about going outside the rain starts again). Why can’t I go and sit in a comfy chair with the book I started while on holiday?Confused (Or just put on my old coat and go outside anyway).
