Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give your order to the Wait Gerbil or the Gerbil behind the bar.

Don't forget to name change if you wish to.

Probably.
As if she hadn't caused enough grief by making us put them back!
Back. Forward. Back. Forward. Can't even make her mind up. She's just playing with us, isn't she? Evil😠

Boiledbeetle · 28/03/2026 23:05

Thanks to Edith's timely reminder on a different thread I've changed all my clocks so will wake up to the right time in every room in the morning. Didn't have to change one clock as I hadn't changed it last time!

heralding the light and warmth of summer evenings - going to bed an hour early (which is the sane solution) or ‘oversleeping’ by an hour on Sunday is worth it!

Thank you for the reminders about putting the clocks forward.Smile
G'night all🌛

Ours went forward three weeks ago so now you’ll all be five hours ahead of me instead of only four. <sniffs pathetically>

Does it ever get confusing that parts of the same country are on different time zones, or is everyone just very aware? Like if a show is on TV all over the country would people just think ok it's on at 8 in NYC which means whatever time here?

ChristmasStars · 29/03/2026 08:51

I've always found time zones interesting, especially when I went to China and discovered that the entire country is on the same time zone, despite having I think what would be 5 time zone equivalents. So what ever time it is in Beijing, it's the same time in Kashgar, 4000 km to the west. I assume in the west they have lunch at what is known as 5am and still get up and go to sleep when you would expect. Not sure I've said that bit very clearly!

When they said that some people have female external genitalia and internal gonads, like every other woman, my eyes rolled so hard in my head that they fell out.

🙄

Because the poster seemed to believe that having gonads meant having testes.

So ignorant.

That was indeed a poster of spectacular cluelessness. I only stumbled across the thread quite late, and hadn't the energy to get too involved, but I was 🙄😯at some of the comments.

Always happy to be of service.
I need to go and change the clock on the cooker. And my watch.

Not really, it's just your normal. And there aren't "national" channels like here, there are networks with local affiliated stations that broadcast their programmes.

They say what time something will be shown at one the timezones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific) in the promo slots.
"New season of NYPD Blue. Starts Monday at 9, Central at 8"

Or at least that's how it was when I lived there.

Thanks. I'm thinking of nationwide channels like Fox or NBC. So would there be times when a channel just puts on a show at 9 everywhere or would different time zones sometimes just show it at 9 their time?

Those aren't nationwide channels, they are networks. Local TV stations are affiliated to one of the big networks to show their programmes in that area, plus local news.

So NBC, CBS, ABC are broadcast by local TV stations in each county or region - I think the coverage used to be about 80 miles

When channel-hopping as a kid, we had about 13 channels but two or three would be broadcasting the same content as each other from CBS, for example (often with different ads)

It is a totally different set up to the UK. Originally that was a geographical necessity as a signal from New York couldn't reach Philadelphia, nevermind Chicago or Denver

ErrolTheDragon · 29/03/2026 10:13

We were a bit confused when we did a road trip in Arizona and Utah. They are both in the same timezone (Mountain), but while Utah observes Daylight savings, most of Arizona doesn’t, the exceptions being Navajo Nation territories which do. There is a sensible reason:

Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time because the state's hot climate means that an extra hour of daylight in the evening would increase energy consumption for cooling homes. Residents also prefer to avoid the late sunset, which would push outdoor activities into the hotter parts of the evening.

(that info was of course not conveniently available in 1990! I love the knowledge available at our fingertips now)
we were also confused because we didn’t realise the road atlas we were using had different scales for the various stages and had overestimated how much of Utah we could see but that was on us.😂

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 29/03/2026 10:16

Large hot chocolate please gerbils, plus a pile of crumpets dripping with butter and jam.

Just coming back to earth after a close relative had a medical emergency during the week. Many hours spent in and out of our local hospital for A&E (blue light job), follow-up appointments, tests and scans. Thankfully, it is looking as though the condition, though serious, is not immediately life threatening.

It's quite scary how, as life seems to be bumbling along quite calmly, all hell can suddenly be let loose.

MarieDeGournay · 29/03/2026 10:28

That sounds really frightening, Damson. I hope your dear relative is getting all they attention they need, and they make the best recovery they can.

You've had a terrible shock, you must be feeling exhausted this morning, so by all means just sit quietly in the corner and the bar-gerbils will supply you with anything that will make you feel comforted and cared for, and help you recover from the initial shock, and give you the strength to deal with the ongoing situation.Flowers

MarieDeGournay · 29/03/2026 10:41

Before I saw Damson's postFlowers
I had popped in to ask the bar-gerbils for several cups of the strongest tea, with sugar and high-octane milk, none of your low-fat stuff, I need it badly:
Somebody on another thread has quoted back something I said on a previous thread, and has asked probing questions - not a problem in and of itself, and I'm happy to join in in the spirit of enquiry, there's nothing nasty about her questions..

.I think it's just that I'm not used to being listened to so intently, and certainly not 'on a previous occasion did not you say....''

Usually when I express my opinions people go 'Hmmmm yes - anyway....' or 'There's Marie off on one of her rants again🙄' so I need caffeine before dealing with this novelty of being questioned closely.😄

FranticFrankie · 29/03/2026 10:55

Hope all goes better for your relative @AuntieMsDamsonCrumble 🌹

Ooh I love a good rant @MarieDeGournay you can't beat a good old rant
Just ask the gerbils- they hear rants all the time. Oh wait they thought I said rats... and are looking nervous

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 29/03/2026 11:04

Thank you for your lovely reactions and comments. It is a shock, however much we realise that we are all ageing and few of us can hope to be healthy indefinitely.

I've continued to read the threads, though I did not feel like commenting for a while. One of the the threads where I am a silent lurker is Woolly Hugs. I am not a knitter, but I find it very heartening how people rally together to offer both genuine sympathy and practical comfort to someone they have never met.

I've also been enthralled by the "Tales of Maud and Fawley" as told by @Boiledbeetle and which helps to keep up the spirits of those involved. A contribution not to be underrated.

And I am loving Gosie's travels in search of Insouciance and Nuance. It's just the sort of thing I would love to do and I've realised that I am starting to live vicariously through gerbils! I can't decide if that is a positive thing, or a sign that I am finally losing my marbles!

lcakethereforeIam · 29/03/2026 11:42

I try to avoid one on one's on other threads. They're generally derailing, I don't want to be mean (not in the spirit of MN!) or risk getting my ass handed to me. Sometimes though they just happen. In the TiF attorney thread I...I know I should have left, I corrected something that was wrong, but added nuance so they could save face. Then they kept quoting me and we totally derailed.

I can't believe it's already nearly midday! I want my hour back 😫

Sending love to Damson & her rellie. 💙

Every civilization has its own mythology. Ours just happens to be gerbils.

PastaAllaNorma · 29/03/2026 11:49

I hope you're relative is ok, Damson.

Mr Pasta's looking askance at the number of Easter eggs delivered today. He's forgotten the uni student is bringing a bunch of friends home for Easter weekend. God knows how we're going to house them all. Sleeping bags, I guess.

Gerbils, does anyone know where I might have put the sleeping bags? Not needed them since the kids aged out of Scouts and Guides

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 29/03/2026 11:52

'Gerbils, does anyone know where I might have put the sleeping bags? Not needed them since the kids aged out of Scouts and Guides'

In the big suitcase in the loft. The one that is far too big to lug through an airport.

DD has brought a bunch of her friends a couple of times, they all brought their own sleeping bags but they were en route to camping in the Lake District so obviously had them anyway. I’d think at least some of your DCs friends should be able to bring their own.
Our sleeping bags are mostly in what has become our ‘box room’, plus one in a drawer under a bed. Other likely places might be old suitcases.
