Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give your order to the Wait Gerbil or the Gerbil behind the bar.

Don't forget to name change if you wish to.

If we pool our winnings we could buy an island!

Go us!

NotAtMyAge · 02/04/2026 14:27

Just waiting for DH to get back from the station with DS and DGS3 who are with us for the Easter weekend. I'll pop in when I can in a probably vain attempt to keep up. 😉

Britinme · 02/04/2026 14:58

You guys (Maine plural) go a lot faster than me. I'm trying to keep up with threads and writing a poem a day for National Poetry Month and go to the gym, all of which is proving tricky for someone who doesn't like to get out of bed before 10am if she can avoid it.

RumNotRun · 02/04/2026 14:58

EdithStourton · 02/04/2026 13:34

They may need 2 men, but only one woman!
Never a truer word, Boily, never a truer word!

I bought one of those beds that lifts up so you can store things underneath. It said you need two people to carry the boxes and to put it together. I did it all on my own and was very proud of myself (and knackered!) by the end of it. There were a few difficult bits and I may have nearly given up a couple of times, but I got there in the end and it hasn't fallen apart yet! 💪

I'm probably being racist and sexist and several other -ists, but I'm finding it hard to tremble with fear at the threat from

I appreciate I'm rather tetchy because of the non-functional oven and trying to clear up and so on.

Be that as it may, there are some bloody maddening threads on MN today

There is a thread running today that has me screaming "JUST BUY A FUCKING VIBRATOR, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, AND GET OFF HOOK UP SITES" at my phone like a crazy woman.

In encouraging news, Mr Pasta has found a sparky who can come look at the wiring. (We've rung 7 so far)

Crossed fingers for oven functionality soon 🤞

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 02/04/2026 16:00

Good to see that the rumours of Jonathan Tortoise's death were greatly exaggerated.

I hope you manage to get your oven working by Sunday Pasta.

I have to psych myself up to go to IKEA. I like the products, but hate the way they herd you round the entire store just to buy a few boxes of Istad (freezer bags). I think I'll also give the Punschrullar a miss. The description says the marzipan is made from apricot kernels.

Apricot kernels can be used to make a form of cyanide.... 😬

Apricot kernels can be used in amaretto and amaretti, I think, along with their more familiar relation almonds.

I’m on teabreak from getting a bit of gardening done - the ‘go outside with a pair of secateurs, gloves and maybe a hori hori and see what needs dealing with’ variety, rather than having a specific aim.

DeanElderberry · 02/04/2026 16:18

ooooo, Amaretto, I found a bottle of that when I cleaned out some cupboards last back end. I wonder where it is? I'll be on the booze after Mass and fire and water on Saturday, and a tiny glass of that after dinner would seem special.

Lent seemed extra long this year.

Is there one in the right size for humans? Asking for a friend.

There will be by the time you clock off tonight.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 02/04/2026 16:55

While out today, we came across four tractors on the roads. Do I need get the smelling salts before I tell you they were: red with white roof & flashing lights & a red thing on the back, red, green with a big white container, & golden yellow with black highlights (or v.v.)? I know how many tractor fans we have at the Bluey, & I'm sorry I can't provide more details.

We turned into a road just ahead of the green one & then I heard an engine revving behind us & something was about to overtake us. My first thought was, 'Blimey, that tractor's putting on a turn of speed!'. It wasn't him, of course, it was a motorbike, but I like the mental image.😂

Ee be Dorset, if I remember rightly?

The song 'Linden Lea' was originally written in Dorset dialect, or at least the writer's version of it:
’Ithin the woodlands, flow’ry gleäded,
By the woak tree’s mossy moot,
The sheenèn grass-bleädes, timber sheäded,
Now do quiver under voot;

Does that sound right if you read it out loud, JanesLittleGirl?

Quickly replying before the thread fills up.

If "eä" is pronounced "aay" then yes, it is pretty close. although I don't think that we drop "w" from the beginning of words and stick "w" onto the front of words that start with a vowel. And foot is pronounced voo' cos we are too lazy to say hard consonants.

I haven't found that one... yet... [scurries off to look].

I am particularly frustrated by the one where the grandparents can no longer afford to subsidise the precious child's private school fees and the OP is horrified at having to ask for a bursary (in case she loses the place - no, love, your boy is clever, they'll help), and equally horrified at the prospect of her son having to attend a mainstream comp where I'm sure he'll be fine.

And another one bemoaning the fact that 9 year olds don't know about the true meaning of Easter (torture and bloody murder), despite Ireland being a Catholic country and don't we all come running for an Irish passport!

As someone who suffered extreme discrimination and bullying as a result of my parents' strict and evangelical Catholicism (yes, it's a thing) as a child, the least I can expect is a fucking Irish passport in return, thank you.

MyrtleLion · 02/04/2026 17:27

Also marzipan is the work of the devil.

WearyAuldWumman · 02/04/2026 17:42

Ta muckle.

Do you think that we can call the island Terra Terf? Also...it will have gerbils, won't it?

WearyAuldWumman · 02/04/2026 17:45

I could really do with a gin right now, but it has to be absolutely calorie free. Alternatively, Visceral-Fat-Burning Vodka would be rather nice.

Punschrullar, @Chersfrozenface - a marzipan coated almond cake - Punschrullar.

Whatneedewantneed damn you, near-diabetes!

I tried to buy a Lego island, but we were £1.50 short.

Sad Times.

But yes to Terra Terf. And stupid question!! Of course it will have gerbils, just as soon as they hand over £1.50 for their share.

One of our teachers trained in the north east and thought it amusing to ask us to translate some phrases she'd learned. One pupil had asked her 'yuh gannin ham fer tey Miss'
We were 🤔 but loved hearing these stories. And she wore fabulous shoes. My faves were the pink metallic high heeled slingbacks. Oh how I wanted a pair.

I'm back, and catching up quickly before the next big move - thank you for the new thread, Boily, I see there are seven posts there already😑

I like the sound of that teacher, FF, every school should have one😄

Errol In 3d graphics, the clipping planes (defining a ‘slice’ parallel to the screen) used to be referred to as hither and yon, though I fear that nowadays they’re liable to be more prosaically called near and far.

'Hither and yon' being used in 3D graphics is a lovely 'huddling together of fierce extremities', isn't it?
'Near and far' would be boring in comparison. Unless of course you're Father Dougal, in which case it would be as intellectually challenging as 3D graphics😄
Printing had/has 'widows and orphans' for isolated words at the top/bottom of pages.

'Yon' is used in parts of Ireland to mean 'that' - 'yon lake is fierce deep'.
Or it can be 'Thon' - 'thon house is quare big' - I think the further north you go the more likely you are to hear 'thon' - Sionnach can confirm or denySmile

Let's see what else - assembling flat-pack furniture - I've found my tribe! I love doing it too!
IKEA shops are too huge for me these days, but I love their dedication to making really good design accessible for not a lot of money. I used to love their paper catalogues for that reasons, browsing online just isn't the same.

Pasta - I hope you are overcoming the cooking challenges, I'm sure you'll serve something delicious, regardless🍽Smile

See yis/youse/y'all in the new Bluey💙

ChristmasStars · 02/04/2026 18:47

I love how IKEA makes you walk round the whole route. That way I know I won't miss anything that I didn't know I would need.

However I hyperventilate at the thought of assembling anything but now I know who to invite round.

MyrtleLion · 02/04/2026 18:49

Someone else will have to be on locking up duty today. This is Day 3 of day drinking in celebration of the Walrus' birthday. We are in our third pub of the day, fortunately also our local, where there are ALL THE DOGS. And they're very cute, especially the pub dog.

And a massive Old English Sheepdog just walked in!

Anyway, I'm off to the new thread.
