The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

A very natural reaction, though not one that ever occurred to me. I guess I just accepted it along with all the other things I couldn't change about my diagnosis. Now I come to think about it, it is rather a blah term

I'm eating a hot cross bun from Betty's with a cup of Earl Grey in the garden. Harlow Carr was lovely, although a group of women arrived in the bird hide and started to chat.

Not quietly pointing out birds to one another, having a full on natter. I was Not Best Pleased and I suspect I had a cat's bum face, but I was facing thee other way so they probably didn't see

Even I, loquacious though I am in every day life, know you keep quiet in the bird hide.

Birds have ears. I know. I've found them in my custard powder.

I've had a bug for a few days and now I'm trying to catch up with real world stuff and updating Maud's socials.

I've no clue what's going on, but figured everyone could do with a hug.

I'm giving my mobile an extra long snuggle to ensure all recieve it through the ether.

Hugs back to you Beetle. Sorry you've not been well. I hope one of the more sensible gerbils is looking after you, with Maud away at K&P's 💙

I'm sorry life is feeling all a bit too much at the moment, Myrtle. It's not pleasant when internet strangers have a go - I'm not exactly everyone's (or even anyone's) bestie over on the Doghouse, as I believe that it is necessary at times to say 'No' to Fluffy and correct unwanted behaviour, and now and then I say so, and get told off like a very naughty child by a dragon of an aunt. It's not fun.

So I hope that life improves for you in short order. Likewise Boily, I hope your germ is receding at speed.

B&B decided in the end that the grass was warm enough, and sunbathed with enormous concentration while I gardened. They are now loitering and staring at me, because as any fule kno, walkies should be from 2pm-5pm and delaying it to 4pm is cruel and unusual punishment. They had an hour 20 yesterday afternoon, but will have to make do with less today.

we’ve had a day out in Chester today which was pleasant. The amphitheatre was occupied not by wild beasts but by a cheerful centurion drilling some juvenile legionaries.

How lovely.
< pictures Darkest Dorset in a dreamy thought bubble >
Now I am enjoying imagining you on the long commute, carrying the sense of your peaceful and lovely home inside your imagination as you travel.

I'm not sure who's holding the umbrella in the picture. Perhaps it is magic?

Your thought bubble is not far wrong. I often sleep for half the journey in the morning and just look blankly out of the way home or, like now, I'm on MN.

I used to spend my time in the amphitheatre and wandering the city walls when I was skiving school.

Happy days.

Just before I was GA'd I was asked if I knew what was going to be done to me. I said I was going to have a chunk removed from my left breast. I thought they did that for my benefit, so I'd wake up knowing as far as possible what to expect. It's just occurred to me that it might have been to make sure they'd brought the right patient to the operating theatre. If I do need more surgery and I'm asked this again I might look confused and say I'm here to visit my sister, just to see what happens 😃

@MyrtleLion when stuff happened we used to be able to say it's tomorrow's chip wrapper. Doesn't quite work the same when it's digital. Wrong sort of chips. I'm glad you've got nice things to look forward to. Together with a tidy garage and a sense of accomplishment.

Edited

They'll wheel you back out if you say that!

Many decades ago I was being wheeled back to my bay in the ward after an operation. My mother was sat in my bay waiting on my return. As they wheeled me in they said something along the lines of "here's your daughter back Mrs Boiled" to which my mother replied totally deadpan "that's not my daughter". She wouldn't come clean even as they wheeled me back out!

I showed her though I threw up straight after my tea and had to stay in overnight!

I've just had a homemade apple scone with clotted cream and blackberry compote. Yummy!

Eldest sprog and I have trying different scone recipes each weekend. We seem to be alternating sweet and savoury. Looking for the next one to try. 'Scone' doesn't even look like a word anymore. I think we're going with cheese 🧀 and bacon 🥓.

Cherry scones are nice. Not that I've ever tried making them mind!

Britinme · 18/03/2026 20:55

Scones! I love scones with clotted cream and jam, and now I have to stop thinking about them until after I've lost all this weight.

I am going to my first ever Tai Chi beginners class tomorrow, so that will be fun.

I too want a scone.

I will instead have porridge.

It's a hard life.

This is No2 dog after some mudlarking on the banks of the Clyde. Under the mud, she is a fox red lab - honestly!

Interweb hugs to all that need one. Or indeed if you want a ' frantic' one

I posted a comment or 2 on another thread; trying to be helpful, until another poster was quite dismissive of what I'd said and was quite sarcastic with it. It is so annoying; these people are so brave behind the keyboard. Why is it so hard to be nice?

Lovely doggo @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius; mine loves mud, puddles and general dirt too 😂

Popping in for a little gin - just been on the FRC tribunal thread which has pushed my blood pressure through the top of my head ☹️ these witnesses! Utter misogynists
They might as well throw women under the bus and have done with it.

I have been reading the FRC thread and can only conclude that Picasso would be eating his brushes as he couldn't possibly have created such a surrealistic image. The devil take your small gin. Step past a large gin. Only a serious gin will help you to cope with the current witness's shite.

Sorry you're not well, Boily, get well soon.
I hope that story was about your mother's quirky sense of humour..!
Sorry things are conspiring against you Myrtle, I hope there's a reset soon and you can have a bit of clear headspace to catch up with yourselfFlowers

Woley, I love that photo! I like the expression on Doggy's face: tired, but triumphant - 'I've really done myself proud mudwise!'😄

Enjoy that gin, FF, you need it!

I have what passes for a 'busy day' tomorrow - I can hear the scoffs of the un-retired, even from this distance😁- so I'll say g'night all, pleasant dreams and good sleep to all, especially those who need it most🌛

@MarieDeGournay 😶 yeah, let's go with your version!

I wish to complain, but I don't know who is complain to. The #*%£!!# Cat has just stretched and accidentally put a 1 inch scratch along my bottom lip. I am not impressed. Can I trade her in?

MyrtleLion · 18/03/2026 23:22

Thank you everyone. I have been very upset because I feel like what I'm doing to get a job has not been helping.

I changed AI models to Gemini this evening and had a whole new strategy planned out in minutes.

Top of the list was to JUST STOP APPLYING for now.

I think@MarieDeGournaymust have had a word!

There are three or four other things to look at but not until next week at the earliest, so I'm feeling a bit better. 💙

EdithStourton · 18/03/2026 23:51

I need a late-night gin. DH has pissed me off royally this evening.

I have a monthly subscription to an audiobook service that gives me a few credit to spend on what I want and another free credit to spend on a curated selection.

And this month's curation has a book written by one of my bridesmaids at my first wedding. We're still good friends and she came to my second wedding (to the Walrus). I know she writes books but I thought it was a thing on the side to her "real job".

Shows what I know!

@MyrtleLion Someone that I went to school with has done very well indeed as a writer. The lovely thing is that they haven't changed at all - still very down to earth.

I can't find a Tai Chi class round here, but the local gym does a Body Balance class which is supposed to be a mixture of Tai Chi, Pilates and Yoga. I'm not sure whether I'd manage it.

I do go to Pilates at the same gym and I've surprised myself with that - I have actually improved, though that's not saying a lot when you take my original condition into consideration.

The Pilates and a Stretch class at the same gym have made me think that I might have a go at the Body Balance...but at the Stretch class yesterday we were required to bend both our legs as best as I can recall and one of mine finished up sticking straight out in front.
