The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

There has been a strange light in the sky here today - sort-of yellow and warm. No idea what it might be! 😂😂😂

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/03/2026 19:21

Should I worship it? Sacrifice something? Panic?

I can’t say it better than that

I have had a busy day in the sunshine.

Took DH to his eye screening, bought petrol, did a big shop at Lidl ( now eating walnuts and Somerset Crunchy Cheddar), did a load of washing and got it all line dried, potted up lots of seedlings, scrubbed the algae off the small garden table....

And then needed a nap! And it will be an early night tonight too. Zzzzzzz......

All of those, Woley. On rotation.

Magpiecomplex · 17/03/2026 19:32

Flowers for Cake, and Myrtle, and WAW.

I had a busy day too, and another one tomorrow, so I'm just going to sit in the corner with a hot chocolate.

Exactly that kind of day!

FuzzyPuffling · 17/03/2026 20:15

That looks like a very exhausted Magpie.

MarieDeGournay · 17/03/2026 20:32

Has anybody [apart from Magpie, of course!] ever seen a magpie chick?
I saw two adults feeding a young one once, but it was only marginally smaller than the adults, and looked exactly like them.

Cute little bundle of fluffy feathers, isn't it?Smile

I've had magpies nesting in my picea omorika for years, but I've never seen a chick.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 17/03/2026 20:44

Busy day. My garage is now as tidy as it is ever likely to be and I have a random collection of items to put onto freecycle including a computer desk, filing cabinet, two full rolls of wallpaper and a full tin of paint, which I'd had mixed to order, then decided I didn't like the colour (green)🙄

I also seem to have accumulated a surprising number of spare fixings from my kitchen refurb and started to wonder if all my units will fall apart one night as there is nothing holding them together😬I did have a couple of units replaced after they arrived damaged, so I hope that accounts for them.....

And oh!, the joy of getting two lines of washing completely dry outside.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 17/03/2026 20:45

Gorgeous magpie chick @MarieDeGournay

Adult magpies are so sleek and shiny that you don't tend to think of them being small and fuzzy as chicks.

MyrtleLion · 17/03/2026 21:02

So sorry to hear your news Cake. I hope anything further is minor.

I am still in dispute with Virgin Media but I have reached the complaints team who have said sorry at least twice.

I have also sent them the actual contract they erroneously sent me in late February telling me my bill was going to be nearly £300 despite me still being in contract till the 31st March.

I've said I will cancel the direct debit unless I get a written reassurance that they are not going to take that amount.

We are approaching the beginning of the end though. But if it carries on for much longer I may just end up cancelling.

AsWithGlad · 17/03/2026 21:58

@MyrtleLion , it’s annoying in itself, but far too much on top of everything else.

As my late mother used to say, it’s piling Pelion upon Ossa.
I’ve never heard that said anywhere else although it’s a standard phrase. Apparently.

I’ve never heard it before either - story of 2 giants stacking mountains to try to reach Olympus, it seems.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 17/03/2026 22:39

I'm sorry you did not receive a complete all-clear Cake. I hope the rest of your treatment goes well and does the trick.

Pleased that Virgin Media have at last started to listen to you @Myrtle. Hope your problem is sorted soon.

Healing and restful vibes to those who are living with pain, both physical and otherwise.

EdithStourton · 17/03/2026 22:39

I should sleep tonight: busy day.

Cake, fingers crossed for you.

My mum used to use it as an expression to mean heaping another trouble onto a pile of troubles.

She had a degree in Latin.

JanesLittleGirl · 17/03/2026 22:55

This morning I left for work in the dark and I got home in the dark. Only a month until I spend my whole life in daylight. I'm not complaining as it means that I live where I am happy. I have lost track of the Bluestockingers who have snags in their lives but yay for those that have crossed the hump and fingers crossed that still have bridges to cross.

That was my lazy catch-up. Now I'm off to bed.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/03/2026 23:26

Gosh, that’s long hours inc travel, @JanesLittleGirl- it was still clear daylight at 6pm and we’re very near the equinox now.

Sleep well all.

AlexandraLeaving · 17/03/2026 23:41

Sending hugs to cake. As is Dr Bessie. Image to follow through the censor…

It was indeed daylight where I am at 6pm, too.

Although I thought we had to wait until the 20th for the equinox, the weather man on the BBC on Tuesday night (17th) said it was then.

According to the BBC weather online, for me
Tuesday Sunrise 06:10 Sunset18:07 (< 12 hours of daylight)
Wednesday Sunrise06:08 Sunset18:09 (> 12 hours of daylight)

so perhaps he was right.

EdithStourton · 18/03/2026 08:42

I've just eaten breakfast outside for the first time this year. Merlin picked up lots of birds (sparrow, dunnock, rook, jackdaw, woodies, wren, chaffinch, long-tailed tit and a few others). The hawthorn is coming into leaf, and I've seen quite a few daisies. Spring!

B&B reckon the paving is too cold to lie on, so Brains has gone inside. Batshit is standing sideways to the sun. If she were human, she'd have a sun-lounger, shades and an airport novel with a tinfoil cover.

And Brains has come back out, to join Batshit in the standing-up-sunbathing.

Funny that, isn't it? I had to do a search for a photo of one.
And then a search for what a picea omorika is😄

Batshit on a sunlounger with her airport novel- what a lovely image, Edith😂

First brekkie al fresco with a background chorus of birds - priceless. Enjoy💝
