The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

1000 replies

EdithStourton · 09/03/2026 20:35

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

I have never read any Pratchett, but I have taught someone with the same unusual name as a Discworld character. As a child he wrote to TP and asked, and subsequently someone with that name appeared in one of the books. Or so rumour has it. The dates mean it’s just about possible.

Now you mention it - you were a starry cat in an image the other day, I think one of my brain cells may have thought 'ChristmasStars? a cat? StarryCat?' but it didn't go any further than that.
Thank you, now I can tell that brain cell that yes, it was right, they are the same😄

Your brain cell was spot on! 😊

AlexandraLeaving · 16/03/2026 21:25

Gin please, bar gerbil. I'm hopelessly out of date with everyone's news (sorry - hope you are all ok) but I can definitely cope with a Discworld discussion. The witches are my favourites - when I have to dress up for school for World Book Day I am always Granny Weatherwax and I take Equal Rites (and sometimes Weird Sisters, but usually just the one) and preach feminism to anyone not scared off by my pointy hat. But I do have a soft spot for Small Gods. DH and I often like to reference 'he tramples the unrighteous with hooves of hot iron'.

I've never read Pratchett either, but I can believe it because I've heard of similar things happening. Kambrea from the Clownfish TV podcast has mentioned that as a younger woman she was a Star Wars megafan, had a correspondence with one of the authors of the Expanded Universe novels, and got a character named after her. I think some authors who are good with fans like to do that kind of thing.

I've had a rather disappointing day, for a number of reasons, but I'm hanging in there.

Gosie is bringing you the cocktail of your choice.

She hopes tomorrow will be better, and asks if you need Rosie, or a Sympathy Camel?

Small Gods is definitely one of my favourite Pratchett books, but who couldn't love the witches and Sam Vimes?

MyrtleLion · 16/03/2026 22:40

I have a long-awaited gynaecologist appointment tomorrow morning. I was supposed to get a testosterone blood test but the appointment came so quickly (after more than a year's wait) that the first available blood test slot was tomorrow afternoon.

We'll see what the doctor says.

Thanks to Gosie, I think I'll have a cocoa because I'm knackered.

A sympathy camel would be lovely. Thanks to a slight misunderstanding of model names and numbers, my electric powered wheelchair needs to be returned and another one sent out.

It costs more and delays my independence by a week or so.

Oh ffs sake! Flowers They have one job.

Your brain cell was spot on! 😊

Great! I'm worried about the other 170,999,999,999 though.....🙃

I googled it, we have 171bn braincells.
That's each😁

WearyAuldWumman · 16/03/2026 23:40

Digression. Someone who was a bit rude to me on another thread and then came over "But I've always supported you...Why are you being so mean?" has liked my post on a different thread and is exhibiting a completely different personality.

You'd think that they'd been hacked on the first thread. That is all.

Speaking of 'hacked', I lost my Twitter account about a fortnight ago. Looks like I'm not getting it back - it was taken over by another email - so I told X support if they couldn't give it back to me in spite of the clear chain of events that they should just delete it.

I'm assuming that someone in Asia is currently using my account to flood my mutuals with weird ads or summat. I'm not opening another one. Not worth the hassle.

Good luck tomorrow, Myrtle!

Are the cheerbils a bit too ..giddy? for a gynae appointment??

Maybe they think Gynae is a long-lost cousin you're bringing to the Bluey tomorrow to be reunited with her extended family.

Anyway, they mean well, bless😄

ErrolTheDragon · 16/03/2026 23:55

My day started unpromisingly with an online GP triage form which wasn’t available till 8.00am for a UTI which - Sod’s Law - started up on Friday. But a nurse practitioner got back to me by phone and I was able to pick up a prescription for ABs mid morning with no more ado, touch wood they’re already taking effect.

Treated myself to a trip to the garden centre in the afternoon. I’ve been lusting after a camellia which will go in a pot at least to start with. And also an indoor jasmine for DH (his birthday this week and he’s very fond of the scent), a smallish Swiss cheese plant and some seeds.

not so bad for a wet Monday which began irritably.Smile

MarieDeGournay · 16/03/2026 23:57

G'night all. Dream and Sleep Gerbils will be paying special attention to CoutingCrones after today's disappointment.
The rest of you will probably have weird dreams after all that Discworld talk😄
But nice weird, I hope.

At least once you've been seen then you won't have to wait as long for a follow-up appointment. If anything is dependent on the blood test the first thing you hear might be a quick telephone call. You know, the sort that comes up as "Number Withheld" and you don't know whether to answer it or not.

That is, if it's like my local 'centre of excellence' hospital, which might be the same one as yours.

Fingers crossed for a thorough consultation with a good result. ♥

I am attempting to lose weight at the moment, so I actually signed up for a gym today and I have an appointment at a weight management clinic on Friday. I am a fat bugger at the moment and would like to be, if not a slim one, a less fat one.

EmpressaurusKitty · 17/03/2026 05:14

Good on you @Britinme. Good luck.

I had some sessions with one of the personal trainers when I started at my gym & she drew up a plan for me which really helped.

@FuzzyPuffling , would you feel at home in living and working here?

Perhaps you have other puffin family you could recommend it to.

Fabulous!
Sadly I am neither a crofter nor a knitter. ☹️

I used to work in a primary school. Say no more.

@CoutingCrones how very annoying!

Sympathies also to those with UTIs, trying to lose weight and awaiting medical appointments.

And (not sure if related to the Discworld chat) but I had a bizarre dream last night. I scratched my head and a vast selection of very varied and very tiny insects fell out of my hair. Minute but interesting beetles in shades of red and pink, green creey-crawlies and some titchy electric blue centipedes that moved very fast. Fortunately I was fascinated rather than horrified, but was a bit 😬when I woke up.
