The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

@WearyAuldWumman That is such a lovely story. ❤

I'm another who was fortunate in the good man lucky dip. We were very young when we married (me just 22 and DH still 21) and there have been plenty of up and downs, but almost 58 years later we are both still so grateful to have found each other.

got me this, which is a regular cake with pineapple plonked on top of it, all wrong even without a ghastly hint that it uses fresh pineapple instead of the proper stuff that comes in a tin.

Do better Bing

I fear the rise of AI if that is what it will lead to

Copilot was not in the slightest bit bothered about the content of your original prompt.

I assume the wait staff will be pushing pineapple upside-down down cake during lunch and tea time!

Well done copilot, that's more like it.

In my experience pineapple upside-down cake pushes itself.

RTÉ giving us a first taste of Springsteen's new version of Rainy Night in Soho. Maybe not my favourite version, but still something-in-my eye territory.

Good to know that one of life's transcendent experiences still awaits you.

The cooking tin is lined with butter and sugar, and the cake is eaten with cream. Forget your aul' Tunnocks.

I tried to see what AI would suggest if I wanted to discuss pineapple upsidedown cake, inspired by my current Janet Evanovich crime readathon, but all it did was use my words with the addition of 'classic' and a hyphen.

I'm not sure whether Stephanie Plum counts as 'classic' though the first books are still in print after more than thirty years and new ones are still appearing. She eats p u cake regularly and mob didn't get her yet.

I think I have a recipe somewhere that my mother got from one of her pals in 1972, and it might be good for St Patrick's Day.

Oh wow, I was just talking about the Stephanie Plum novels this morning, Dean! My first five are all signed by the lady herself. Back in the sweet innocent days of the newborn internet, we used to exchange emails. She sent me a card on the birth of my first child. I liked her daughter Jen, too, who used to run her mum's website.

I used to chat with Sparkle Hayter in that era as well. Did you ever read the Robin Hudson books? What's A Girl Gotta Do, Nice Girls Finish Last, Revenge Of The Cootie Girls and stuff like that?

Gods, the internet was lovely back then, even if it did take 10 minutes to view a photo,

CoutingCrones · 12/03/2026 12:27

Chair ordered, should be here within 4 days.

I am GIDDY, I tell you. Absolutely giddy. (Although looking outside into the gale, maybe getting out and about isn't all that appealing today)

I don’t think I’ve had pineapple upside down cake since the one I made in Dom Sci in the first year of secondary school. Afaik it was nice but probably too sweet for my taste now.

I don't know the Robin Hudson books - I'll look out for them. Stephanie and Lula and Grandma got me through this horrible wet dark winter. I bought myself some of the late books I'd not read before as a Christmas present, and then when I caught flu in early December and couldn't read anything heavy got stuck into them. Then, when they were done, went back to book 1. Up to 10 now.

Hopefully by the time it arrives the weather has changed back to glorious spring instead of the mid autumn we are currently experiencing!

It is very sweet (not that I've eaten it in decades) but if you serve it with a lot of whipped cream that buffers all the sugar. I suppose I could even fold some Greek yoghurt into the cream.

😱

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 12/03/2026 12:45

You definitely wouldn't want to be testing a new chair around here today @CoutingCrones . It's blowing an absolute hoolie with rain coming sideways.
I've just made a cake (not pineapple) for my voluntary group meeting this afternoon, but I'm not sure many will turn up in this weather. At least the cake will freeze.

I think he would have included a hyphen: post-creation.

I suspect God is a pedant. Otherwise, why all the multiple different sub-species?

And those cherries look more like sprouts or giant peas.

I tried your prompt in gemini & this is the result. It's a bit like one of those 'What's wrong with this picture' things for children - which reminds me, back in a mo...

Oh I must listen out for that! Thanks for that Deano.

I always found Shane MacGowan the person problematic in the extreme, he seemed to delight in stereotypes we had been fighting for centuries, but his songs are wonderful, Rainy Night in Soho one of the best.

I heard it, the original I mean, the other night, I was listening on headphones, which I have to cos my hearing is bad, and that close listening revealed the wonderful orchestration, the sweeping strings and the poignant tin whistle blending perfectly, a huddling together of fierce extremities as Hazlitt might have said if he was a Pogues fan😄
The arrangement on Fairy Tale of NY is very good too. - I must check who was responsible. Unsung heroSmile

ifIwerenotanandroid · 12/03/2026 13:06

Someone (u/n Helen Day) put this on X, from Treasure magazine in 1965. I've seen other ones on X, too. They're a blast from the past.

Maud is having a duvet day!

It's blowing an absolute hooly here today - I can see why @CoutingCronesis having second thoughts about the joys of the outdoors. I wore a woolly hat while gardening not so much because it was cold, but to keep my hair out of my eyes. I watched a rook, possibly carrying nesting material, flying valiantly into it.

The racket of the wind made listening to a couple of CountrySlide podcasts a bit hit-and-miss. I only discovered it recently, and it hits a previously empty rustic listening spot. The first one was questions from their audience, which was entertaining, and the second one was with a bloke from the RSPB, about birding in general, bird counts and turtle doves.

When I'd finished, I sorted out the beaten-down daffs I'd brought indoors and put them in water. At this rate there will be more flattened by the end of the afternoon.

The hat on the bird 😃

Pineapple upside-down/rightside-up, whatever is my lemon drizzle cake 🤢

I found my Clitoria seeds and have planted a few. I'd completely forgotten I'd bought them.
