The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

Boily, at this rate you'll be counting the pages of old newspapers you throw away.

Myrtle, tough times offer two options: get on, or give up. You have got on, complete with teams of cheerleading gerbils. I sincerely hope that 2026 is a much better year for you.

And now, a quadruple gin. I've just been on another thread, and I need it...

Oh, there were at least 30 in each...so 60 plus two bottles plus two lids equals 62!

60 plus two bottles is 62, plus 2 lids is 64!!!

Someone has pulled the emergency cord/pressed the emergency button on my train, so we have an unscheduled stop at a station "for a while".

I hope it's an idiot rather than an emergency.

If I was throwing away a newspaper that came with a magazine on a slow day I might count it as two, but newspapers are basically thin books so even I would only count it as one.

Now a ream of paper if being thrown away would definitely get counted as 500 items!

I found a can of carrots during a recent cupboard swap - expiry 2019 ☹️ and pumpkin soup from an indeterminate date....it had worn off
DH has slight tendency to store things (aka hoards) volunteered to look after them for me
I am a bit of a thrower outer as lots of crap in the house makes me feel overwhelmed.
I have been known to sneak stuff into the bin when no one is looking.
I like the feeling when a couple of bin bags full of 'stuff' make their way to the charity shop. It makes my brain feel cleaner and tidier; sounds strange but it gives me a lift

Anyway enough rabbiting on. I'll have a large g n t, gerbils please. Ice and lemon.
And crisps please. And a couple of paracetamol if you don't mind- my knee's a bit sore today 🦵😟

I hope the use of 'rabbiting' doesn't upset the gerbils......

See that seems so much more productive than 2 doesn't it!

😇

Bugger. It's a medical emergency. So we'll be stopped for a bit. I hope the patient is OK. No fuss in my carriage or the nearby ones but some unpleasant smells. Which could just be unpleasant late night revelry or the result of someone being very unwell.

I used to be able to count. My excuse is a stressful day.

I hope that you're allowed to move soon.

EdithStourton · 11/03/2026 22:01

I hope you get home soon, Myrtle.

Thank you. I never seem to know how people give up. Do they expect someone else to come and rescue them? It is so far beyond my comprehension I can't even begin to imagine how they do it.

WearyAuldWumman · 11/03/2026 22:02

Is there a gerbil who could fetch me a very large gin and tonic?

MyrtleLion · 11/03/2026 22:05

Ambulance has been called. So we are waiting for it to arrive. I could be here some time.

Just think, I could have caught the later train that I was booked on. I'd have had time to buy posh crisps and too much wine from the shop at the station and be drinking and eating, stuffing my face, and piling on the pounds as we speak, completely on schedule without a care in the world.

Boiledbeetle · 11/03/2026 22:08

Gin on the way.

FranticFrankie · 11/03/2026 22:10

That's a very large one Boily 👌👌

MyrtleLion · 11/03/2026 22:16

We are moving away from the unscheduled station stop to the next scheduled station stop (love that phrase - next station might not be a stop, next stop might not be a station). The ambulance can reach us better there. So more delay.

I just checked the train I was booked on, thinking I might change and get on it as a result of this delay, and it has been cancelled!

So in the best place possible right now.

And just before posting the driver has said the ambulance has arrived here and the patient is being treated.

Gin on the way.

Glenda has a rope...

Perhaps you could send her out to the train with loads of posh crisps. That might keep her out of trouble...

Britinme · 11/03/2026 22:22

Books! I got rid of 29 boxes to the charity shop before I moved here 24 years ago and still brought a hell of a lot with me. Nowadays I mainly buy/read on kindle but I can’t bear to part with series that I’ve read in physical books in case I want to re-read, but realistically am I really going to wade through 20 volumes of Patrick O’Brien’s Jack Aubrey books again? I have to harden my heart.

We are on the move but terminating at a station 20 minutes from my home station.

Bugger.

Glenda has a rope now! The other two were trying to lasoo her when she moved towards the open gin bottle!

I'll tell her to load up the snack cart and the hot chocolate bowser. She won't be allowed to bring alcohol though.

Oh, if I start drinking now I'm not stopping till I'm unconscious!

Bigger bigger buggers @MyrtleLion

MyrtleLion · 11/03/2026 23:00

On a different train to my home station, arriving soon.

Now, do I claim a refund for the cancelled train I was booked on or the delayed service I travelled on?

MyrtleLion · 11/03/2026 23:04

The Walrus is going to collect me, despite it being way past his bedtime. He is amazing 😍
