The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: definitely full of ludicrous halfwits who refuse to get a grip (with unionised gerbils)

Welcome to The Bluestocking: convivial by design, opinionated in the best way, generously stocked with excellent food and drink that complies with whatever it’s meant to comply with, and any calories, gluten or alcohol are entirely virtual.

Staffed by impeccably trained, unfailingly polite gerbils who run a tight bar with plenty of enthusiasm and good intentions. Quick with the drinks, but terrible spillers spellers and liable to turn an idle thought on existential existence into a full blown musical with Busby Berkeley routines. You have been warned.

All women welcome, just in case that isn't obvious. Men can go to The Staunch Ally round the corner.

I'm sorry your car had that run-in with an unforgiving surface, WaWFlowers
If it's just scratches on the underneath, that doesn't sound too serious, and I guess you can check if the sensor is working.. but carefully in case it isn'tSmile

A friendly local mechanic who will look at it would be ideal! I hope it all works out OK.

EdithStourton · 30/01/2026 16:51

B&B wish it to be known that they were very good, and stopped on the whistle, rather than chasing a muntjac which raced off across a vast field of stubble.

We came back over the playing fields. Brains had hopped over some wooden exercise equipment to investigate a bramble patch. Batshit jumped onto the equipment to join in and....
<wobble
wibble>
<wobble
fell off.
🙄

AsWithGlad · 30/01/2026 16:56

I do enjoy reading the adventures of B&B.

I must say that was my initial reaction too!

One of our in jokes is to say things like, "spraying kefir over the sofa actually makes it taste better, ya know", to which the response is, "well, I never, I wondered if you'd done it on purpose. I must try that myself".

In better news I have submitted a tax return even though HMRC swore blind it was unnecessary, and I'm due a tax rebate of almost £7,000. Which won't appear for months but should come in handy later this year.

I stopped drinking red wine anywhere but at restaurants years ago after the 3rd or 4th spillage. White wine and G&T seems the safer option given I wave my hands around a lot when I am TedTalking chatting animatedly, especially if I’ve already drunk a few.

I would drink white wine and gin (though not in the same glass) except the Walrus only like red and says white wine makes me silly. As does gin. I did have a few g&ts last night though. It had been a tough day.

I’ve just come back from a Bracing Walk along the nearest coast to us. Well, DH is a bit nesh, so we started off with a round of the grounds of a Hall and dived back into the town after a bit of prom. The woodlands were carpeted in places with snowdrops, and there are crocuses and daffs coming out despite the cold. Also some camellias and a big rhododendron which I think was regretting it.
And just in the last couple of days we’ve started to notice more birdsong.

If the car is running and nothing has fallen off, I wouldn't worry too much, although you could take it into to a friendly garage and have them take a look.

I was in the supermarket a few weeks ago when someone in an expensive low-slung sports car decided it would be a good idea to pull forward out of the space, across a footpath with a kerb, rather than reversing out. Completely grounded the car, with the front and rear wheels neatly lined up on either side of the footpath. Now that would be something to worry about

Something to worry about for the owner of the car. Absolutely hilarious for onlookers though 😂

There’s a lot to be said for being silly. It’s no barrier to being in The Bluestocking.

@What a grand walk, @ErrolTheDragon . There are lots of snowdrops and winter aconites out here, and I saw one clump of crocuses under a tree. No sign of camellias appearing yet.

I don’t remember ever seeing rhododendrons around here. We must have the wrong sort of soil. At least some of it is chalk.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2026 17:18

I don't drink (we both gave up when DH got cancer) so I'm always surprised at wine conversations! I forget it exists.

When Barack Obama visited Ireland (2010?) they imported a car for him, and when it was driven out of the Embassy car park it got stuck. Funniest thing ever.

Rhodos do prefer acid soil. In scientific parlance, they are calcifuges.
ETA chalk soil is alkaline.

She.
Batshit is female.
As is Brains.

If could split the IQ that Brains has between the two of them, we'd have a pair of averagely intelligent dogs. As it is, we have one Intellect and one Idiot.

ETA Batshit forgives you, though.

At the time I quoted that old Irish blessing: 'May the road rise to meet you...'😁

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2026 17:44

Gubbins isn't stupid, she's just young and enthusiastic. One day she'll surprise us all.

EdithStourton · 30/01/2026 17:46

@DeanElderberry that is hilarious.
I knew what was going to happen, and I still burst out laughing.

averagely intelligent dogs? Bo-ring, compared with the adventures of B&B, which we love reading😄

Kitty’s annoyed because I’m making rolls & she’s not allowed to help. She’s having to put up with checking the recipe.

OMG, apologies for misgendering Batshit!

She is still very endearing though 🤗

There may be a chance of a lick-e-lix later… I don’t think it would go very well in the bread though.

I had a friend who made a tuna cake for her cat’s birthday.
