The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: definitely full of ludicrous halfwits who refuse to get a grip (with unionised gerbils)

Welcome to The Bluestocking: convivial by design, opinionated in the best way, generously stocked with excellent food and drink that complies with whatever it’s meant to comply with, and any calories, gluten or alcohol are entirely virtual.

Staffed by impeccably trained, unfailingly polite gerbils who run a tight bar with plenty of enthusiasm and good intentions. Quick with the drinks, but terrible spillers spellers and liable to turn an idle thought on existential existence into a full blown musical with Busby Berkeley routines. You have been warned.

All women welcome, just in case that isn't obvious. Men can go to The Staunch Ally round the corner.

Wet here….we’ve been intending to redecorate and reorganise the office sometime (now all my work kit has gone) about now when the weather is poor, so we’re making a start on that. Phase one is moving out all the books. We probably won’t ever need any of our textbooks again but I’m not sure we’re ready to ditch them. We already got rid of duplicates of our undergrad text books (having done the same first degree). DD didn’t have to buy a single textbook for her degree, the online resources plus libraries covered all that she required so she won’t have all this baggage.

I'm definitely mostly a project knitter, and the magic loop method 😱I'll stick to dpns.

I tend to learn a new technique not for the fun of learning it, but to let me make whatever it is I want to make. SSK and kitchener to make socks, for example. Still can't do kitchener without regularly referring to the instructions, though, despite having made quite a few pairs of socks.

I'm very impressed at your new skills, Magpie. It took me bloody years to get that far!

If it's any comfort, Edith, neither can I and I've been knitting socks for a good while now. I have to reassure myself I'm doing it right as it's such a nuisance to get it wrong.

I tried to teach my daughter to knit and sew and embroider, as my mum taught me, but failed miserably because she was basically not interested in that, or indeed in gardening. She does play piano and flute though, and is teaching herself guitar and violin, so it’s horses for courses I guess. Luckily her MIL likes sewing and knitting and gardening, so my DGDs have somebody nearby who can do those with them, which my older DGD likes to do.

I taught a girl in the family to knit, but she did two rows & declared it slow & boring, & with that she was off doing something more interesting! 😂

Just had this emailed to me. Are these the prettiest Valentine chox or what?

And the pic is a great patchwork design from fb.

Right handed me learnt to knit from my left handed mother about three times, and forgot three times. I taught myself to crochet from a book! She did successfully teach me dressmaking though, and basic embroidery.

I have to follow instructions for Kitchener stitch too. I have a pair of socks that I nearly finished knitting for dh, ohhh about 5 years ago - I have about the last 6cm of the foot of the second sock to do. Every so often, I find them, when I, sorting out my yarn stash, and say to myself that I will definitely finish knitting them. So far, I have not - maybe 2026 will be The Year! 😂

I was looking for something else online and these popped up. Great, aren't they? I think we can all relate to them😃

There's a Bob the Builder one in the same style that I like.

"Can we fix it? No, it's f**ked!"

That's brilliant...

DH1 was a research chemist in the pharmaceutical industry - he'd have loved those!

@Magpiecomplex , there’s a pattern on Ravelry you might like. It’s free for February and there’s a video of how to sew it together.

I’d knit it with 4ply yarn and 3.5mm needles, but you might prefer the tiny one.

I saw it and I thought of you.

Which of our support beings can knit?

One for Sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold!

I'd love to try that one on some of the rants in Reddit.
