The Bluestocking Women’s Pub: definitely full of ludicrous halfwits who refuse to get a grip (with unionised gerbils)

Welcome to The Bluestocking: convivial by design, opinionated in the best way, generously stocked with excellent food and drink that complies with whatever it’s meant to comply with, and any calories, gluten or alcohol are entirely virtual.

Staffed by impeccably trained, unfailingly polite gerbils who run a tight bar with plenty of enthusiasm and good intentions. Quick with the drinks, but terrible spillers spellers and liable to turn an idle thought on existential existence into a full blown musical with Busby Berkeley routines. You have been warned.

All women welcome, just in case that isn't obvious. Men can go to The Staunch Ally round the corner.

H G Wells.

😂😂😂😂😂

@Magpiecomplex , there’s a pattern on Ravelry you might like. It’s free for February and there’s a video of how to sew it together.

I’d knit it with 4ply yarn and 3.5mm needles, but you might prefer the tiny one.

I saw it and I thought of you.

Which of our support beings can knit?

That's gorgeous!

Sorry, AsWith, I'm not a chemist so your joke isn't getting the right reaction😄
Magpie is a better audience, obvs!

Hg is the chemical symbol for mercury.

Hg is the chemical symbol for mercury.

Really??? I thought I knew all the 'oddities' like Fe and Cu and Pb and all that - just because I collect facts, I've never studied the periodic table.
But I never knew that mercury was Hg, that passed me by somehow.
Every day a school day here, and I love itSmile

So, AsWith, belated😂😂😂!

Why did the biology teacher and the physics teacher split up?

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 06/02/2026 19:09

For some reason, the pairing of H G Wells and Mercury immediately had me thinking of "War of the Worlds", even though I knew the alien invaders is the book were from Mars. However, when I looked it up, I discovered that the famous 1938 radio adaptation which caused a sensation in the USA, was staged by Orson Welles's theatre company, Mercury on the Air. The book was narrated by Orson Welles himself as a documentary and many Americans who hadn't caught the first few minutes thought it was real! So there is more than one association between H G Wells and Mercury.

I love the Jeff Wayne musical adaptation and remember driving through France one hot summer in the late 1970s listening to the mellifluous voice of Richard Burton as the narrator and the music playing at full blast.

Here's another techie funny I saw a while ago😄

I’m just catching up on the thread… I got my DD that T-shirt. Yes she’s an electronics engineer and yes we did watch all the Star Trek boxed sets available when she was a teenager.

I wish I had jokes, but I can’t think of any.

Can I provide discounted Liberty Print Tana Lawn instead? I’ve ordered from the company many times and they’re reliable. Don’t buy it all as I’m debating getting a couple of metres.

MyrtleLion · 06/02/2026 20:39

Did day drinking.

Met many dogs. We live in that kind of place.

And it's still only 8.30 so we can now eat Magnums and drink wine before tomorrow's dinner at 7pm.
