The Bluestocking - your local women's pub, warm, friendly, and not at all unusual in any way.

Welcome to The Bluestocking, the welcome is warm, the conversation is wide-ranging, the food and drink are delicious but magically free from anything they need to be free from, and the bar staff are highly-trained, professional, efficient and very friendly gerbils.

Could you please get a grip with thread titles. Anyone from outside will think you're half wits. The Bluestocking women's pub is ludicrous

  1. 'Bluestocking' is self evidently women
  2. 'The' denotes a pub name
The Bluestocking is all the information you need. Have been itching to say this about other Bluestocking thread titles but now it's all too much. I suggest if anyone's been having a drink there recently, you check their feminist credentials.

How kind and generous of you to point this out. Silly us.

It appears you had forgotten

DeanElderberry · 22/01/2026 09:25

If anyone from outside thinks we are half wits, are they right or wrong?

I use 'The' in many contexts not related to pub names (the market, the lecture hall, the community hall, the institute, the boat club, the yacht club, the library).

My feminist credentials are just fine thank you.

Better get a medic to check out that itch.

MyrtleLion · 22/01/2026 09:30

Longevity isn’t a thing here. There’s no seniority, and no loyalty card.

Everyone’s welcome to stay and join in. Or quietly nurse a grievance in the corner.

Critiquing the pub on arrival is… unconventional. You'd have more fun if you joined in.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2026 09:33

brews (or crème de menthe) all round and peace and love?

DeanElderberry · 22/01/2026 09:33

Which reminds me that I eventually got round to giving the cats their worm pills. Not sure whether they were the September ones or the December ones. I'm pretty sure their June ones were late, so I suppose that puts them into the six month schedule I used to aim for.

I waited until dinner time and put each pill into a little cube of pate (Lidl chicken parfait). I put Tiddles' onto her dish while I grappled with Boo who was extremely resistant. As I sat there holding his jaws shut, tickling his throat and crooning at him as he fumed and growled and went as angular as a fine figure of a cat can go, she wandered up, sniffed the pate, and ate it all, including the crunchy bit.

GOOD Tiddles.

I composed the current thread title, highame. Does that make me a ludicrous half-wit?
Meh, I've been called worse.
You're very welcome to check my feminist credentialsSmile
Bargergils - a pint of Creme de Menthe for highame - make it to go in case she was just popping in to say hello and has to be off somewhere else.
Otherwise, there's a comfy chair in front of a blazing fire...

If a lot of half wits congregate do they add up to a smaller number of wits, or do they multiply each other into a half of a half of a half . . . . .

Just as well we have the gerbils to keep us on track.

MarieDeGournay · 22/01/2026 09:39

I believe the proper full name is 'The Bluestocking Arms' ,highame.

Some people were dissing delicious herbal teas yesterday, so I feel free to say Creme de Menthe is nasty, and the larger the quantity the nastier it gets.

In my entirely correct opinion.

It is still Barrys tea time for me (loose leaf, made in a pot).

Good morning.
I always think anything minty is improved with chocolate.
Has anyone tried this?

My son decided 5am was morning and nobody should sleep any more today, so I plan to ignore all normal conventions and have chilli rice crackers and mint chocolate liqueur for my morning snack.
I think I'll have a full Scottish breakfast for lunch (potato scones are the best bit) and then hot chocolate and biscuits for dinner. I'd like to sleep all morning and spend the afternoon gardening.

Back in the real world I'll get back to work and reply to some emails.
Have a good day and I'll pop back in later.

No no, we add together to make a decent number of full-wits.

RandomHypatia · 22/01/2026 09:58

Incidentally, we've been playing with our 3D printer in the evenings when MasterRandom is asleep. We now all have magic wands in the style of Harry potter in different colours and are deciding if we need a trident similar to Triton in the little mermaid. I'm considering coming up this a design for a figure of my namesake.

Circumspice.

Sir Christopher Wren always served herbal tea with a pinch of circumspice, I believe😁

Have a good - if very very long😑- day, Hypatia!

That Hotel Chocolat stuff - couldn't you just bung a few After Eights into the blender with a lot of vodka and a bit of condensed milk? 😂

There's a pile of debris by the front door, as though a whirlwind has just passed by. The gerbils are sweeping it into the bin.

@RandomHypatia I always think anything minty is improved with chocolate.

I love Hotel Chocolat and have to severely ration myself when I go into one of their shops. Its a shame they stopped doing the bags of little chocolate drops that were very good for baking. I now have to melt, or grate some of the batons, which doesn't have the same effect.

Please don't tell the gerbils about the magic wands. They'll all want them.

MarieDeGournay · 22/01/2026 10:13

It looks like highame has gone, so I won't get my feminist credentials checked this morning after all😒
I'll replace them in the bejewelled silver casket I keep them in, then..

Remember when I said I'd start the new thread, and that I had spent ages feeling anxious about thinking up a new thread title? I was telling myself that I was being silly, I mean it's only a thread title, what's the worst that can happen if you get it wrong?
Clearly the worst that can happen is called highame 😬😱😄

Actually, I think we do quite well not to attract the rougher elements of MN and I'm absolutely positive that the thread titles are part of the reason. In fact, if I recall, the thing that had me peering through the windows in the first place was an intriguing thread title, mentioning various forms of animal life. Long may they continue.

Oh some tangled web from another thread, is it?🙄 Thanks Hedgey.

Although I was actually ridiculously anxious when trying to come up with a good thread title, I didn't take highame's weird critique of it to heart. it was so odd, I thought it was somebody trying to be funny, but not quite managing it😄

Thank you Deano, I was happy to be given the oppo to dig out a photo of the opening ceremony of The Real Bluestocking ArmsSmile
You're all there, you're just not all visible in the photo, though I see Inky's antlers are clearly visible over to the right..
