A husband and five other men have been charged with a string of sexual offences against his ex-wife over a 13-year period.

Philip Young, formerly of Swindon but now living in Enfield, has been charged with 56 sexual offences, including rape and administering a substance with intent to stupefy/overpower to allow sexual activity.

The 49-year-old has also been charged with voyeurism, possession of indecent images of children and possession of extreme images.

Five other men have also been charged with offences against his ex-wife, 48-year-old Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity.

All six men are due to appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Mr Young, who police described as a white British national, has been remanded in custody.

In this past year there has been the Pelicot case in France, and a recent thread on FWR about a man in Germany abusing his wife, another in Spain, and now this.

How many households is this going on in?

I'd be outside the court to show support if this was something she felt supported by. A quiet protest and show of solidarity

Me too. What a brave thing to do, to waive her right to anonymity in these circumstances.

The availability of the technology, which allows perpetrators to share images etc of their crimes with other men, means there will be more and more of this I think.

A police officer on a TV documentary about online child sexual abuse stated that if they arrested all the men who are engaging in it, there wouldn't be enough prison space in the whole country to house them all.

I said something similar on a thread about the MSP who was in the news for supporting a bloke convicted of having indecent images of children. I think the reason that some sentences are so lenient is because there are so many of these monsters that there isn’t enough room in the prison estate to contain them.

There has to be serious consequences to stop these men.

The names and faces of those men should be published and displayed on screens and billboards all over the country. Just look at the cowards in their masks and face coverings.

If they are convicted, we could make it so with a crowd funder.

Design: the six mugshots in two rows of three, with RAPIST above each one and name underneath. Use three rows of two for portrait boards. Across the top: SHAME MUST; across the bottom: CHANGE SIDES.

It does show just how pathetic they all are with their masks. I hope they live in fear every day they are not locked up, and in more fear every day once they are locked up.

I wonder if the 5 men have wives or partners.

The grossness of the idea that they are allowed to be "home" for Christmas on the assumption that any woman in a relationship with a man like that would want him around for Christmas.

Disgusting title the bbc chose too- they’ve objectified her too. Why not say that a woman was brutally assaulted by her ex husband?

Philip Young, 49, admitted 48 offences relating to Joanne Young, who has waived her legal right to anonymity, between 2010 and 2024.

The charges include multiple counts of voyeurism, sexual assault, rape and administering a substance with intent to stupefy Ms Young, 48, "to enable himself or another to engage in sexual activity with her".
Ms Young, who divorced him after his arrest in 2024, sat in court on the opposite side of the dock dressed in a long-sleeved black top, supported by her sister and a witness support officer.

Four other men denied committing sexual offences against Ms Young, while a fifth is yet to enter pleas.

Young, who served as a Conservative Swindon borough councillor, in Wiltshire, between 2007 and 2010, stood in the dock wearing a grey sweater.

He confirmed his name and date of birth before entering his guilty pleas to the following charges, which took almost 30 minutes for the clerk to read out.
• 11 counts of rape
• Seven counts of sexual assault by penetration
• Four counts of sexual touching
• 11 counts of administering a substance with intent to stupefy/overpower to allow sexual activity
• 14 counts of voyeurism
• Publishing obscene articles

Some of the rape and other sexual offences were allegedly jointly committed with other men.

One of the voyeurism charges relates to at least 200 occasions between 2010 and 2024, while he admitted publishing non-consensual intimate photographs and videos of his ex-wife on no fewer than 500 occasions.

Young has denied eight other charges, including making indecent and prohibited images of children and possessing extreme pornography.

No words can express my revulsion at these pricks nor adequately convey my admiration at the strength of Joanne Young.

TerrysChocolateKumquat · 23/01/2026 19:50

Like the Mme Pelicot case, what I find so shocking is all the co-accused are from the same town/area the Youngs were living in. So, if this had happened in another town, there would have undoubtedly been men queuing up to carry out similar offences. It’s not Swindon especially which has these kinds of men living there, is it??

NAMALT, but always bloody men 😡😡😡😡

Funny how so many people still ask why there is an 'epidemic' of men not being able to find partners... Almost as if the people asking don't read the news at all from a female perspective 🤔

Mauvish1 · 23/01/2026 21:56

I can't see any other threads on MN about this.

Just wanted to add my voice to those of support for Joanne, and to those of utter disgust for this pathetic beast that she had the misfortune to marry.

May he (and all other similarly guilty parties) live in fear of retribution every remaining day of their miserable lives.

Manderleyagain · 23/01/2026 22:20

Also adding my voice in support and also respect. When I heard on the radio that she had waved her anonymity I choked up a bit. Shame must change sides. I hope she gets justice.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/01/2026 22:46

I see no reason now not to presume it’s happening across the country. Pigs. Porn addled pigs.

Alpacajigsaw · 23/01/2026 22:49

So so vile

This poor woman.

IwantToRetire · 24/01/2026 02:13

Honestly I have for many years been more than able to think that you just cant trust men, and they will think up any number of gros acts of violence and disrespect of women.

But since the publicity around the Gisele Pelicot case, there seem to be more stories of this type of abuse happening in many countries.

These men are walking amongst us every day. Maybe with even share a workplace.

Women have fought so hard to it into the public domain that women are sujected to male violence, more likely at home than any where.

But even with this being acknowledged have any men / men's groups formed to get me to acknowledge what is going on.

Of course not.

Instead we get (some) men supported by other men telling women they should allow men into support services meant for women.

It's as though it is still taboo to even mention in public that the problem is men.

Just retyping because I am ashamed of how many typos there are, and it is so serious and frightening to have to accept this situation I wont to be clear. (NB to self do not post late at night.)

Flowers for all the women who have lived with this, and those still living with this reality about men, and trying to find a way to escape.

Adding this here, but really it deserves a thread of its own.

Just disgusting. Male violence will never stop when boys continue to grow up in "homes" where women and girls are abused and worse.

A girl was raped by her dad, grandad and two brothers during years of abuse. Three generations of her own family targeted the youngster, who can't be named. The ordeal began when the girl was six years old.

In Hove. This child's nearest rape survivor services still don't offer female-only group therapy.

I have no words that can sufficiently convey my contempt for that girl's mother. She had one job, to protect her daughter, and she completely failed.

guinnessguzzler · 06/02/2026 21:04

That is just horrendous. Utterly horrendous. Those poor girls, I really hope they get the support they need and I hope their abusers get everything they deserve in prison.

IwantToRetire · 06/02/2026 21:27

I think in the past, I mean when i was younger, I was sort of aware that in previous centuries many women grew up in households and families where they were often subjected to rape and abuse by family members.

And as my younger self niavely thought its not the same now.

Well I suspect I was wrong then and wrong now.

How many women and girls are living at home with the daily experience that this is not their "safe" space.
